So this is a burned copy of the file correct? Does the transfer look good as the site says it does?
I've bought several copies of Song of the South. Ultimately they are from one of either two sources. 1) the latest PAL VHS release from the mid 1990s or 2) the Japanese laserdisc from around the 1990s. You can tell if it is from the laserdisc, because it usually has unremovable subtitles.
Utlimately the transfer is pretty good on both. It looks like the film went under some restoration before being released on video in the UK, but it still looks like a film from 1946. My favorite disc I have of the film DOES contain those extra features, but it has a different menu setup with songs and art and such (except instead of "Coal Black the De Sebbin' Dwarves", mine has "The Martins and the Coys"; the missing segment from Make Mine Music). Honestly, the 1986 re-release trailer is almost reason enough to get the disc if you can. It really is a fun trailer that, I think, displays the spirit of the film perfectly.
NOTE: I should also let you know, however, that if you are looking for the best copy of the film around then you are looking for a television airing of the film. It aired on television in the UK just a few years ago, and by comparison it looks like the film underwent some amazing restoration! I think if you dig through the archives on here you might find some screencap comparisons.

I bought my copy in person. At Mega-Con in Orlando, they had a seller with it. He had a DVD player there for me to watch it to see that it was a clean, real copy and I bought it for $15. It works great. Most sci-fi conventions like Mega-Con, Dragon-Con, Comic-Con, etc have bootleg DVD sellers. And you will find one with it there.
And yes, I know it is 100% illegal. BTW, cops are walking all around Mega-Con for security, I see them buy those DVDs too
To correct myself - I didn´t mean to stay away from the film, just the illegal DVDs that floating around. The film in itself is very good, but all this copies of transferred VHS or Laserdiscs to DVD is laughable, since many of them claim that they are original DVDs. THIS FILM HAS NEVER BEEN RELEASED TO DVD!
Instead, buy a legal cassette of the film from UK. (now only used, of course). Thats my advice.
All of those sites, including the one you linked to, sell the same bootleg edition.
I found it for free on a torrent. If you want me to burn you one, let me know.
The quality is good for watching, though it's 4% sped up and not restored whatsoever. It came from the Hong Kong laserdisc, which is essentially a bootleg of the UK VHS.

HI EVERYONE. THOUGHT I LET YOU KNOW THAT ON SONGOFTHESOUTH.NET THEY HAVE POSTED A RUMER OF A PREVIEW OF SONG OF THE SOUTH COMMING TO DVD ON THE PREVIEW SECTION OF THE 2-DISC DVD OF SLEEPING BEAUTY WHICH GETS RELEASED ON OCTOBER 7TH 2008. THEY HAVE A LINK TO THE WIKEPEDIA WEBSITE WHICH IS REPORTING THE NEWS!! ALSO ON THE PREVIEWS IS.....PINOCCHIO, WALL-E, PRINCESS AND THE FROG, TINKERBELL, BOLT AND SONG OF THE SOUTH. MY REACTION TO THIS IS.....ILL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT!!! ALTHOUGH I REALLY HOPE THIS IS TRUE.....I DO NOT KNOW HOW RELIABLE WIKEPEDIA IS AT THERE INFORMATION SO DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INPUT ON THIS?????
please don't give your hopes up yet msh1975. Wikipedia doesn't exactly have the best track record for being 100% accurate. My professors in school wouldn't ever let me use it as a liable source of information. Let's wait a little while and see what Disney has to say...
This would be shocking, but you never know. Disney Home Video had that short-term comsumer relations forum that just closed a few weeks ago, and we mentioned our desire for Song of the South A LOT in there.
Personally, I would wait until further DVDs show the preview off as well before I start to get my hopes up, such as the upcoming PE release of "Pinocchio".
That would be really awesome, but I doubt it. I would think that Disney would release a statement about SotS being released, seeing as its probably their most wanted DVD right now.
well i knew it was to good to be true......wikapedia has removed it from there site!!! someone made a mistake or a vandal as stated above
oh well so much for hopeing.......i really hope disney does release it in the future.......sorry guys, thought that site was reliable and i was wrong.....shame on me for hopeing.
