New Line asks for more 'Hairspray'
John Waters to write treatment for sequel
New Line Cinema has made a deal with "Hairspray" creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to summer 2007’s hit musical feature.
Planning to return are director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film.
No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of "Hairspray" had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010.
"Hairspray" grossed more than $200 million worldwide and served up a strong-selling DVD and soundtrack album. The mid-July target would mirror the release of the original, which was replicated this summer by "Mamma Mia!"
Original starred John Travolta (dolled up in a fat suit to play Edna), Christopher Walken and Nikki Blonsky as well as Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.
Aim is to pick up the Baltimore saga of the Turnblad family after the resolution of the first film, which was set in 1962.
"I never thought of musicals as franchises, but it certainly worked with ‘High School Musical,’ and the idea of working with that cast again, and creating new material and music, is a dream come true," Shankman told Daily Variety. "John (Waters) has such an original and extraordinary voice; we all can’t wait to see what he has come up with."
There won’t be movement on hiring a screenwriter until Waters completes his work. Leslie Dixon scripted the original.
Waters is repped by WMA.

Re: Uhh... HAIRSPRAY 2??
With John and the original songwriters involved it may turn out well but for now all I can say is 'Grease 2'.Harbinger wrote:New Line asks for more 'Hairspray'

If you had asked me to give you a thousand movies that I expected a sequel to be made from, this movie would not be one of them. The idea of Hairspray 2 can either be one of the best, or one of the worst ideas ever pondered. I guess we'll have to wait and see...
Even though JiminyCrick beat me to it, I was thinking Grease 2 the whole time I was reading the article.
EDIT: Maybe they'll put in "Mamma I'm a Big Girl Now" if they make a sequel!

Hairspray 2: Velma Stops the Beat
It will, of course, be left on a cliffhanger ending in which Edna is presumed dead, Link and Tracy have split, and Velma, Amber and Prudy have teamed up to ban music from Baltimore forever. These plot points will, of course, be resolved in the last film in the saga, Hairspray 3: At World's End, in which Edna is resurrected as Edna the White, Tracy and Link have an impulse wedding on a schooner, and all the allies of equality team up for the final battle against Velma in the Baltimore Harbor.
Anyhow, let's keep in mind, they're just working on a treatment. It doesn't mean anything will actually come of it.

Well, as far as story goes, I hope Velma and Amber don't come back or are at least limited to small roles. I hate sequels where the same antagonists are used. If done well, this could be nice.
Hope so! I love that one.EDIT: Maybe they'll put in "Mamma I'm a Big Girl Now" if they make a sequel!

Don't forget in part 3 there will also be a steam train spaceship and a subplot with Velma going back in time to stop Tracy from ever meeting Brendon Fraiser's character in Egypt in the first place.SpringHeelJack wrote:Hairspray 2: Velma Stops the Beat

That seriously was one of the funniest things I have read online in the past 24 hours.
as for this sequel I say BAD IDEA, like even worse than remaking State Fair in 1962.

As a big fan of the Broadway show and the movie I don't know how I feel about this. The movie was amazing in my opinion, and a great re-telling of the Broadway musical. The actors were all in character to the fullest and I thought they all shined and were perfect for their roles and I liked how they were interpreted. I know some fans of the Broadway show would disagree with me - and others wouldn't - so again, that's just my opinion.
Now, "Hairspray 2" - unless they got every single actor back to reprise their role, had John Waters help with the script, got Mark Shaiman and Scott Whittman back for the music, I think i'd be very nervous as to how this would turn out without them.
The last thing I would want is the see the same story in a different fashion - it would get old! I don't really know where else they could go with it except a "Velma's Revenge" which was already mentioned - but again, they'd be fighting the same battle as the first. I have faith in the original writers though as well as the composers so if they make it just as catchy and unique - I'm all for it - if not, I'll be angry it has the "Hairspray" name.

"I'm the man who keeps it spinnin' round - Mr. Corny Collins with the latest, greatest, Baltimore sound!" - Corny Collins (Hairspray).
I hate when sequels are only thought up just because the original did well. I think sequels should only happen when there is definitely more story that could be told, or when the thought of a sequel is there in the beginning. Hairspray was great, but the thought of a sequel doesn't sit well with me.

I don't understand all the resistance to this news. The world of Hairspray is an imaginative one and I don't think it's such a stretch to believe that the talents behind the original (film/musical/musical film) can mine even more creativity out of that world. Same goes for the music and the people behind it. While I agree that the original cast returning would be essential for success, I say give it a chance -- let's see what kind of stories and songs they turn out before writing it off as another Grease 2.

It's hard to be positive when most sequels/remakes of musicals are quite terrible (aside from the 1951 version of Show Boat). I mean, look at:tsom wrote:I agree with AwallaceUNC. How come when there's a new movie, musical, or anything else announced, there's a bashing of it? Let's face it, we can say "oh, that's a bad idea! It's going to bomb!" but we all know that we're going to see it anyway. Give it a chance, it might be good.
Grease 2
Shock Treatment
State Fair (1962)
High School Musical 2
see what I mean? I know that I will most likely wait until this comes out on DVD/Blu-ray. Also this sequel will most likely be a duplicate of the original in order to make the most money like HSM franchise. Even with a production crew like this I feel it's just really hard to feel good about this one. Also if everyone said "I'll just wait to see this" it would be a very boring discussion.

I will not hear a bad word spoken against "Shock Treatment"! For one, I mean... it's barely a sequel. More like a spin-off. Typically, a sequel builds upon a story created by the first film. "Shock Treatment" doesn't really do that. It vaguely continues the Brad and Janet subplot, but they're almost entirely different characters and you can watch the movie without knowing anything about "RHPS". Not to mention, the songs are great and it accurately predicted the reality TV trend. Not too shabby, if you ask me. Plus Jessica Harper is always wonderful when she sings.
