Muppet Rarities To be shown in Detroit

Post by JiminyCrick91 »

At the Detroit Institute of Arts in Michigan July 27, August 3, 10 & 17 at 2:00 PM the Museum will be showing different Muppet programs each week that are apperently touring around the country.

In conjunction with The Jim Henson Legacy and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the DFT will pay tribute to one of the world’s most inspired film and puppetry artists, Jim Henson. A visionary puppeteer AND TELEVISON PRODUCER who created indelible characters like Kermit the Frog, Henson brought a unique combination of childlike wonder and adult sophistication to his groundbreaking work. Muppets, Music & Magic: Jim Henson's Legacy includes rarely seen recordings of Henson’s early career as a puppeteer, as well as his first experiments with commercials and television programs. This series is produced by The Jim Henson Legacy and Brooklyn Academy of Music. Tour Executive Producer Irena Kovarova.
The week's that are in Det. MI are as follows...

7/27/2008,
Muppet History 101 - Learn your Muppet history! This is material you won’t see anywhere else: early TV appearances, commercials, guest spots on the The Dick Cavett Show, and more! Plus, this program contains the rarely-seen pilot for The Muppet Show—“The Muppets: Sex and Violence.” The program will be introduced by special guest Craig Shemin, archivist for the Henson Foundation. (90min.)

8/3/2008,
Commercials & Experiments - A mind-blowing collection of shorts, crazy commercials and other rarities from the Henson vault. Highlights include: an industrial film for Wilson’s Meat that must be seen to be believed, excerpts from experimental TV programs The Cube and Youth 68, and Time Piece, an 8-minute masterpiece that showcases Henson’s talent for making music out of everyday sounds. (90min.)

8/10/2008,
Muppet Fairytales - What happens when you kiss a frog? No one can tell the story better than Kermit and his friends in The Frog Prince (1971). The Elves and the Shoemaker (1994) asks the question: What if the elves who come to the aid of the shoemaker are actually Elvises? See these classic tales through the googly eyes of the Muppets. (105min.)

8/17/2008,
A Better World - An episode of the rarely seen Fraggle Rock (1983) contrasts three communities: the musical Fraggles, the industrious Doozers, and the giant Gorgs, who all co-exist in a carefully balanced underground world—with those mysterious human creatures who live above ground. The Song of the Cloud Forest (1989) is a beautiful evocation of the rainforest that focuses on the story of a golden toad who must avoid the “uprights” trying to catch him. (90 min.)

That sounds cool! Meanwhile, when are "The Frog Prince" and "Hey Cinderella!" coming out on DVD?

I could drive down there and watch if I really wanted to... but alas I'm not bothered.

Howard Ashman:
He gave a mermaid her voice, a beast his soul, and Arabs something to complain about
Arabian Nights (Unedited)
Savages (Uncensored)
If it ain't OTV, it ain't worth anything!
