It's really sad. Imagine all those little boys visiting a store with their mothers; mommy, I really want to buy the Sleeping Beauty dvd.
Mother says: "No Michael, are you crazy? It's only for girls, don't you see the pink bracelets and mirror? I don't want you to play with that.
Mother turns her head and thinks to herself ; Gosh, I hope my son isn't gay....

And just because he likes a real Disney classic.
How can Disney do this to all those boys???

I'm 25, but the sad thing is, when I buy this dvd, and the lady in the store asks, is it a present? I'm very tempted to say "Yes, it is".

Why say, no, it's for myself, it's a masterpiece and the image you have in mind is wrong.
In the end it's Disney itself that creates this image and is limiting their target audience to the extreme.

Exactly, those mothers are just annyoing, they think that they"re so feminist but they"re really aren't,for exmaple, when the Pirates and Princess toys were at McDonalds a mother was angry because they asked if she wants "A little boys's toy or a little girls's toy" and she thought that little girls can love Pirates Of The Caribbean but you won't hear about a mother who don't understand why people thinks that only little girls will be Enchanted or Sleeping Beauty on DVD.
My mother for example thinks that the Princesses are "Stupid rainbow ballerinas for little girls",she obvisouly never seen Sleeping Beauty or Enchanted.
My cousin for exmaple wanted a GBA to play from my games,so when I looked a game and he saw the Little Mermaid GBA game he asked me if I also have games for girls too,of course I explained him that it's wrong to think this way,he wanted to play Pocahontas game-Not only that he didn't knew who Pocahontas is he didn't knew she's a Disney Princess (I guess he only knows Cinderella,Ariel and Jasmine).
Disney are to blame for those kind of things but it's also people, they see a bunch of girls together and thinks it's some sort of Barbie and Disney insted of fixing this keep this so they can make more money :x.
I love the Disney Princesses but I hate when they think that only little girls like it.

While actually they make less money, as the whole world loses interest in the classics, EXCEPT little girls.
They limit their target audience to the extreme.

And all that franchise has actually NOTHING to do with the classic films, how it looks, how the princesses are presented, how they behave, speak, who they are, how the classic films look, etc.
So in addition, they are fooling the little girls too.

And they probably will be disappointed when they watch the real movie and see how mature and different it is.

But the Princess became very sucessful thanks to their agrassive marketing, but if only little girls will buy Princess stuff then they will make less money.
Well, little girls only thinks it's "Cinderella/The Little Mermaid who plays dress up the whole day",they never seen the films,I never seen a little girl who knows that Ariel's name isn't The Little Mermaid.
But I love that in the franchise the Princesses always save the day :D.
I for exmaple clipart of Belle brusing her hair or Aurora put lipstick on.

Beauty Kit Gift Set?

From the film: "My gift is the gift of beauty. One gift, beauty rare..."

Ha, and the name of the film is "Sleeping Beauty"!

You don't have to buy this you know. Little girls would like some merchandise that they can play with based on the movie.

Wouldn't you be sad if Wal-mart and Sam's Club had something far better than a beauty kit? They should offer the really good things everywhere. I'm glad I'm not missing out.

But yes, they should market the film as more mature and for everyone, and reflect it in more of their merchandise.

It seems little boys would want to watch any movie, including ones with stories about girls, before they are corrupted and made to think by the whole world that they can't like anything they want. It's not the same for little girls. We have tomboys and actually encourage girls to like and do the same things as boys.

And some little boys might even like to play with that beauty kit. Hey, when you're a kid you imagine you can be and do anything you want, until it's crushed when you get older.

Exactly!

I don't see why people are up in arms about this new cross-promotion merch. It's no different from the plush toys that BestBuy offered for a few of the Platinums (I gave my Baloo plush to Kram and kept the Lucky plush for myself). And IIRC, Target had a special bracelet if you bought The Little Mermaid there.

Yes, it's a rather silly little set, but it's meant to appeal for the younger kids who like those things, and it's only available at one retailer. It's not attached to every single copy of Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition that will street, and it's not like Disney is saying the film is only for kids (just for kids at Wal-Mart  ). And it's certainly not like Disney's twisting the consumer's arm and saying "Buy Sleeping Beauty at Wally World and get the beauty kit with it!"

I'm buying mine at BestBuy or Target. ;)

Thank you carolinakid! May I call you Jon? I'm Mike! Us gay guys tend to know each other on this forum.

Albert ( ), is there something at Target or BestBuy for the film? That we would like more?

Anyway, I found this great video for Disney's Magical Places that shows a good amount of clips from what must be the restored, reformatted Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray! The colors look much like we're used to, no Cinderella re-coloring here, they just look better, and stand out more (especially the reds, check out Phillip's capes). One problem I have, though, is that, while this wider frame does look more impressive in some scenes, like with the dragon, it looks weird when Phillip and Aurora are dancing...

This is related to the video that Mike posted, but not related to the topic:

I don't like how all movies are under the "Disney" heading now. Pretty Woman and Sin City aren't straight-up Disney movies...they're Touchstone (and/or Miramax and/or Hollywood Pictures)...

Remember when The Good Son came out many years ago? Parents were outraged that it was a "bad" movie (for adult themes or drugs or something- I don't know) because they figured that any film with Macaulay Culkin must be okay for their kids to watch. It's kind of like that with Disney. Hopefully the DVDs retain the Touchstone & Miramax & Hollywood labels on them. Because if someone brings home Pretty Woman for their young child to watch, they may be mistaken.

Rant done.

I didn't really notice a difference in color, but it was kind of small on my screen, and maybe I wasn't looking hard enough...?

The video won't work on my computer Mike, could you help me?

I'm sure Roy E. Disney is puking at the very idea of this store exclusive since he hated the whole Disney Princess line from the start. A better choice would have been the film's CD soundtrack with the four demo recordings found on disc 2 included, and yes there would have been space for both.

There are boys as well as girls out there who also want a jewelery kit when they buy their Sleeping Beauty DVD, you know. Gosh, you people really do jump the gun sometimes. Be a bit more open minded, would ya?

This is slightly off the topic of Sleeping Beauty, but the idea of "Disney's Magical Places", whilst being somewhat twee and cringe-making, is slightly cute. I dread to think, however (from the "Land of Blu" segment), if an extremely dim and unsuspecting parent buys Kill Bill or Sin City for their two year old. ;)

They can always buy movie merchandise, that doesn't mean that they should tread Sleeping Beauty as a Bratz DVD.

the gift of beauty yes, but the great thing about Aurora is that she has the gift of natural beauty, even as a peasent girl she didn't have to plaster herself in make-up an such.

So maybe the little girls that get this can look at themselves in the tiny mirror. and use the little pouch as some type of carrier, and well, i can't even tell what half the other stuff is, it appears to be some sort of gloss, nail polish and...I dunno what that castle thing is.

However, I think this little "beauty kit" makes small girls believe that they need make-up & hairclips & such in order to be or feel beautiful. Perhaps even think that there is no such thing as a natural beauty, which is what Aurora is. Her gifts are naturally singing amazing and naturally being beautiful.

Maybe I'm looking way too much into this. Still though, I think it'd be great if Disney marketed their merchandise to be more gender neutral.

No idea, really. I've just been buying the Platinums from those two stores for the past couple years: Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan from Target, with The Jungle Book and One Hundred and One Dalmatians from Best Buy. The only Platinum I bought at Wal-Mart was Cinderella, and it was because it was mispriced (I would have otherwise gotten it at Target). It came out the same day as Star Trek Nemesis: Special Collector's Edition and both were $13.99, even though Cindy was supposed to be $16.99. Funnily enough, even though I'm more of a "Star Trek" fan than I am Disney (as hard as that is to believe given that I seem to talk more about Disney and Doctor Who), I've watched the Cinderella: Platinum Edition more times than I have Star Trek Nemesis: Special Collector's Edition.

I wouldn't mind if BestBuy had the plushes again. Would really love to get a Samson plush or a Merryweather plush. :D
Sprince wrote:They can always buy movie merchandise, that doesn't mean that they should tread Sleeping Beauty as a Bratz DVD.
They're not. Just because one retailer is having some magical beauty kit, doesn't mean that the product is being promoted internationally as some vapid and shallow Bratz wannabe.

That's like saying Disney is marketing solely to dog owners or S&M practitioners if there was a Lady and the Tramp store-exclusive leash and collar at Circuit City.

I always buy my movies from the Disney Store so that I get the lithograph even though they do charge more for it than a Target or Best Buy - but as of right now, my local store doesn't have pre-ordering available yet and I wonder if they are doing it or not because sometimes they don't. Anybody know about the Disney lithographs yet? Or seen a Disney Store doing a pre-sale with an offer? Unfortunately their online store doesn't do this anymore.

That usually doesn't happen until August Corny. I wonder if they'll have the blu-ray to preorder because I want to get me some lithos too.

I hope they re-issue the soundtrack, even though the last edition was fab!
