I still don't see how many animated movies will improve when it comes to Blu-Ray. I'll have to see the difference for Sleeping Beauty.
Best Movies of 2009:
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline
5. Ponyo

I know what you mean. The Disney Classics I've bought already look amazing on my HDTV. Maybe on Blu-Ray there will be more details visible in the backgrounds.

I remember somebody here ages ago posting two screencaps of the same shot from The Lion King, one in HD and one in DVD quality. And believe me, there was a difference. The DVD looked sharp and well defined but the Blu-Ray cap even more so...background details popped out even more, and the colours felt more vivid.

Plus, if I recall, most films have a higher resolution than the average DVD.

I'm definately gonna give blu ray a shot with some of the older animated movies (before the 90s). But if I don't see a great improvement, the only way I'll update to blu ray (for those movies) is if regular dvd goes inferior.

That is until Blu-ray players hit $50 and we have $5 Blu-ray dump bins at Wal-Mart. :D I actually wouldn't mind seeing that.
Give it a few years... just like with DVD's.

I'm willing to bet that when Bluray players take a huge price cut this holiday season... The Bluray's themselves will start appearing with smaller and smaller price tags...

Not sure if anyone else has noticed... But DVD's have taken a price drop since the popularity of Bluray... And Bluray's have also been slowly getting less and less expensive.

We will probably see them at a standard $19.99 rate before 2009 is out.
I can only speak for myself, but I don't plan on getting into blu-ray anytime soon. I know the studios are hoping everyone will eventually dump DVD like they did VHS, but in this case, the difference in picture quality between DVD and Blu-ray is negligible compared to the differences in quality that existed between VHS and DVD, IMO. I've seen some Blu-ray movies at friend's houses, but I just don't see any rush to make the switch. Most standard DVD's picture quality, especially the last few years, is excellent.
Also, when I do eventually replace my DVD player with a Blu-ray one, the standard DVDs I have now will play on them, improving their picture to boot, so I know I'll never replace the DVDs I have now. I'll only buy Blu-ray titles I don't already own.
You don't make the film fill your TV, be it 4:3 or 16:9, you make your TV fit the original ratio of the film. If that means a letterboxing or pillarboxing of a film, so be it.

My only hope for Blu-ray is that they will finally get the intended aspect ratios right for Finding Nemo and Toy Story 1 & 2, as they were released in theatres at a 1.85:1 ratio, but released on DVD in 1.78:1 for some reason. This goes for the DACs that have yet to be released in their proper intended ratios: The Great Mouse Detective, TLM, Aladdin, etc. Not to mention releasing those movies that have been edited in the past to finally get their proper versions released: Fantasia, and again TLM, Aladdin, etc.

There's a difference.

When I first got Enchanted I watched the DVD at my house and then two days later I watched the Blu-Ray at my girlfriend's. The colors are just so much more intense. The film looked miles better.

That could be because it was a new film (for example the difference with Snow White may not be as big) but there is a very notable difference, especially if you've just watched the DVD.

Strange but I've actually found greater difference with animated than live action movies - Enchanted and the CG TMNT movie both seem to be more of an improvement than live action films like POTC: COTBP and Superman Returns.

I specifically stated animated films, not live action/animated hybrids. In my next post I even more specifically stated pre-90s movies. Enchanted does not fall into the pre-90s animated category.

Here ya go, Wondy...

Barty's post with links to screen cap comparisons of The Lion King

However, only the links for HD cap #1 and #3 work. If someone could post comparative caps from The Lion King it would be much appreciated...

And those HD-caps are only in 720P. Blu-Ray has a resolution of 1080P. Still nowhere near the resolution real film has (about 4000 by 2000), but it's a big step closer than dvd has. So, yes every film would look better on Blu-Ray, if the proper steps were taken. I trust Disney with that one.
