I was merely trying to draw attention to the post!!
Why does no one ever respond to to the question - surely I am not the only person to have heard this rumour about the Pierre Lambert Sleeping Beauty book?

If it helps, I DID think "hm, if they sold those in my country I'd buy one in a snap!"

Why don't they include "Grand Canyon" which was featured before the movie at it's first release (AND is was included in the bonus material of the first SB DVD)

Disney Live On, that has already been posted.

I assume Grand Canyon isn't on the PE because:

1). Seriously, who, besides avid Disney fans, would watch that?

That's why you include it Panfan, so that you can make it the best set possible, regardless of the obscurity of the bonus content. I'm hoping there's more trailers than last time and that the 1951 story treatment is carried over.

Now that doesn't sound too bad, and a 43 minute making-of is great!!
But castle walk-through still sounds weird to me. Is it a walk thruogh the Paris Castle or animated?
I am really excited about the trailers though. I just love trailers and to me it looks like they included all of them.

THANKS ESCAPAY!

WOW! A real 40+ minute Making Of! Isn't that what everyone says Making Of's need to be?

And a 30+ minute Walkthrough?!
Escapay wrote:--The Queen and a Good Mary (0:15) - new live-action reference footage?!?
Well, that sounds like the quick black and white clip of a live queen and some man dressed in drag as a rather tall fairy that we see in the Making Of from the first DVD. I guess it's the full version of that.

And we KNOW there is more, they already mentioned the Tchaikovsky Story and stuff, though maybe that's on Disc 1. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll only have the three trailers from last time.

Wow! All of this sounds amazing! :o I seriously can't wait now until October and actually watch all of this. The new making of really has me hyped up and wondered what they'll discuss. I'm hoping they might go into more detail about the voice cast, such as Bill Shirley, Barbara Luddy, and Taylor Holmes.
Dottie wrote:But castle walk-through still sounds weird to me. Is it a walk thruogh the Paris Castle or animated?
From what I heard, it's going to be a virtual recreation of the old walk thru in Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in California, that is now going to reopen soon after an expanded rehab. The DL version is very different than the Paris version, since it used actual figures and dimensional diorama sets to tell the story, instead of the tapestry and stained glass version of Paris. I'm wondering though what the walk-thru will be of - the original illusion-filled, black lit, and plywood figure cutout version from 1957 to 77 made by Eyvind Earle and Ken Anderson (which I posted information on along with concept sketches of it back on page 29), or the doll and brightened up version from 77 to 2001.

I actually think the walk thru part is what I'm looking forward to most on the DVD, but it appears I'm the only one really thrilled about it, and one of the few here on the boards who is fanatical about the Disney parks as much as the films. I think it will be great to have a walk thru of this, sort of like an old ressurected piece of Disneyland history we can look back on and visit.

Those bonus features sound great! Now I'm confused again as to whether or not to sell the 2003 version and buy this one or what...

:?

What exactly is the new version missing, besides the audio commentary and the Grand Canyon special?

Yeah, I'm really excited/pleased for the documentary runtime! 43 minutes isn't the most ideal running time (Then again, I'm a greedy fool who likes making-of documentaries to be an hourlong or more, with the 90-120 range being the best running time, IMO), but for the DACs, the 40-45 minute range is a great runtime.
Dottie wrote:I am really excited about the trailers though. I just love trailers and to me it looks like they included all of them.
Ditto!
Mike wrote:\And a 30+ minute Walkthrough?!
Technically 18 minutes, with a 10-minute featurette about the History of the attraction. I'm not sure if the History featurette is part of the Castle Walkthrough section, as they're not listed together in BBFC, but I put them together as it made sense. Still, an 18-minute walkthrough sounds very promising, and after the excellent Virtual Ride for TLM (perhaps one of the few things I enjoyed about their Platinum, then again, perhaps I'm too critical of the TLM Platinum's bonus features), the Sleeping Beauty one can only be better!
Mike wrote:Well, that sounds like the quick black and white clip of a live queen and some man dressed in drag as a rather tall fairy that we see in the Making Of from the first DVD. I guess it's the full version of that.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that! Hmm, I wonder then, if it will be a series of stills mixed with some video (like the Prince Phillip one) or the actual footage (like the Briar Rose one).
Howard wrote: The new making of really has me hyped up and wondered what they'll discuss.
Let's hope they did enough digging in the archives to finally find out who voiced the two-line Queen! It sounds like it could be Verna Felton sometimes, but there's a slightly noticeable difference if you compare to two several times.
Ames wrote:What exactly is the new version missing, besides the audio commentary and the Grand Canyon special?
These are likely to be completely gone...

Games, Music, & Fun: (17 minutes, 16 seconds)
-Disney's Art Project (11:42)
--Introduction (1:17)
--Design a Princess (5:17)
--Build a Dragon (5:08 )
-Rescue Aurora Adventure Game
-Princess Personality Profile
-Sing-Along: "Once Upon A Dream" (2:55)
-Music Video: "Once Upon a (Another) Dream" - No Secrets (3:39)
-Sleeping Beauty Ink & Paint Game

While some of the featurettes below (I'll * them) could possibly find their way re-edited into the new documentary, though the rest is likely dropped...

-Once Upon a Dream: The Making of Sleeping Beauty (16:22)*

-Story (22 minutes, 41 seconds, 10 text-based stills)
--The History of the Story (10 text-based stills)
--The 1951 Outline (22:41)

-Production (14 minutes, 3 seconds)
--The Music (2:46)*
--The Design (3:22)*
--Creating the Backgrounds (1:07)*
--The Restoration (2:57)
--Widescreen to Pan-and-Scan Comparison (3:50)

-Sleeping Beauty Virtual Galleries' Audio Commentaries & Text-Based Stills
--26 minutes and 14 seconds worth of audio commentary on 80 stills (out of the total 541)
--11 Text-based stills with information related to each gallery

My advice is to keep both versions, Ames. The audio documentary/commentary/yaktrak alone is reason enough to keep the 2003 edition!

Oh yeah I forgot to mention (at least I think I forgot) that Howard sent me the audio commentary/documentary/yaktrak mp3's last week and I've been able to transcribe the first 3 or 4 of them! When I return to Jersey in a couple days I'll finish transcribing the rest, then post it here for anyone who's interested. The 5-10 minute video-montage version (setting the commentary/documentary/yaktrak to film clips, artwork, and talking-heads) that I'm planning on doing for the benefit of those who either don't like audio commentaries or prefer having a visual guide to follow, will take me a bit longer.

I agree. I also would have loved to hear Bill Shirley talk about his part in the film, like how he was cast as Phillip, recording the picture, etc. It's a shame you don't hear too much about him or his part on the film, considering he had a long and varied career, acting in a lot of movies and musicals throughout the 40s and 50s, appeared on Broadway, and later became a movie dubber, like singing for Freddy in My Fair Lady.

Thanks for the heads up, Scaps! The Castle Walkthrough sounds super cool. I, too, absolutely loved the Virtual Ride on the Little Mermaid DVD, so this should be amazing considering it's nearly four times as long. I'm also happy to see a healthy-sized documentary along with all of the previous trailers (even if we don't get new ones). I'm really curious to know what the "Build Reel" is. Could it be one of those scene breakdowns found on modern Disney films that presents a scene in storyboard, rough animation, cleaned-up animation, and final animation forms?

Seeing all these features (along with others not even given running times, yet) makes me more comfortable with getting rid of my 2003 SE, especially since I'll be downloading the commentary from that one. That means the only major features I'll be missing are the Grand Canyon short, the 1951 outline, and the gallery commentaries. I'll admit that I found Grand Canyon too dull to sit through (though that doesn't excuse its absense on the BD), so that only leaves the outline and gallery narration as stuff I'll truly miss. Even then, there's the possiblity that the latter will return on this edition (hopefully with the CG presentation intact).

So here's every dang feature we know that'll be on this release, with hopefully more surprises coming (like that Eyvind Earle featurette):

Those bonus features are simply amazing. I truly can't think of anything else that could possibly be included on there. I really can't see even the most critical of Disney fans finding something lacking in them (the Grand Canyon short should have been included I agree, but we all know how boring that is anyway -- it's not like we lost something significant). Hopefully this is a new turning point in the quality of Disney releases. I can't wait for this release.

Me too. I thought it was simply the general section title for the storyboards/live-action stuff, which is why I listed it as such (the 14:15 runtime is a composite of the 6 short features and not an actual runtime passed by BBFC). If it's an entirely new feature (or one of those awesome multi-angle progression reels going from storyboards to rough and clean pencil animations as well as the final animations), that's more than welcome as well.

Maybe they can do it like the one in The Emperor's New Groove where you also see comparisons between the backgrounds and the animation, with angles showing only one or the other as well as both mixed.
ToyStoryFan wrote:I really can't see even the most critical of Disney fans finding something lacking in them
I won't say I'm the most critical of Disney fans finding something lacking, but regarding featurettes that I'd like to see in this release but we're likely not getting them...

1. A Restoration Featurette to replace the old one, explaining how digital restorations are actually done, as well as the differences between the 2.55:1 camera negatives, the 2.20:1 70mm prints, and the 2.35:1 35mm prints.

2. Multi-Language Reels for a few songs. I personally would love to hear a reel for "I Wonder", and it's only natural to have one for "Once Upon a Dream". But "Skumps" would be an interesting multi-language reel as well!

3. Maleficent Featurette similar to the character-or-actor-based featurettes we've seen on a few platinums ("Tinker Bell: A Fairy's Tale", "Cruella De Vil: Drawn to be Bad", and even to some extent, Lady and the Tramp's "The Siamese Cat Song: Finding a Voice for the Cats").

3. Conversations with Mary Costa would be great, and akin to the "Conversations with..." series on some of the Treasures and Vault Disney Collection DVDs, as well as Aladdin's "Alan Menken: Music Renaissance Man" and The Jungle Book's "Mowgli's Return to the Wild". She can have some one-on-one time with the viewer as she discusses her work in Sleeping Beauty, her friendship with Walt, her professional and personal life, and how she feels about her work all these years later. If I had it my way, "Conversations with..." would be an obligatory featurette for every Platinum, featuring two or three noteworthy individuals discussing their work on the film, along with their peers offering their own thoughts and praise (but not too much, we don't want it to have too much back-patting).

4. Disney could also do another Story Behind the Story featurette, looking at Sleeping Beauty's origins and well-known fairy tale forms, such as Basile's Sun, Moon, and Talia, the widely-known Perrault version, and the Brothers Grimm variant Briar Rose. They also can look at the operas and ballets such as the ones by Carafa, Scribe, and Tchaikovsky. All of them can then be tied together to show how they all influenced the Disney version. I'm sure most of this will be part of the documentary, but Disney has made standalone featurettes regarding the original story as well (Beauty and the Beast had the brief The Story Behind the Story documentary that looked at like...8 or 9 Disney movies and their origins, and The Jungle Book had its own 15-minute featurette about the Kipling version versus the Disney version).

;) :P  :D

I think I may pick up the S.E. version purely for these two features:

--The History of the Story (10 text-based stills)
--The 1951 Outline (22:41)

I'm kinda hoping the price will die down when the platinum comes across, but they may jump up instead
