Upcoming Animated Classic Bluray Releases

Post by JDCB1986 »

Was browsing around bluray's homepage and they have up "coming soon" descriptions for a few Disney Animated Classics. In the past that usually means that within a year they will get a release. They had Sleeping Beauty up for quite some time as "coming soon" before it was officially announced and given a date... And news has been floating around that Finding Nemo will be getting the bluray treatment either late this year or early next.

Anyway... here is the cover art for Finding Nemo on bluray (unfortunately, the same as the DVD)
Image

And here is a list of the other titles that are listed now as coming soon.
The Ones We All Know About Already include, of course:
Tinker-Bell
Sleeping Beauty
The Nightmare Before Christmas
WALL•E
High School Musical 2: Dance Edition

And the others... without official dates as of yet are:
Monsters, Inc.
The Little Mermaid
Beauty And The Beast
Aladdin
Pinocchio
The Lion King
Peter Pan
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles

Something I find interesting about this line up is that it throws off completely the second issues of the Platinum Collection... in original order at least. Snow White (which would be the first to be released as a 2nd time Platinum) isn't mentioned, nor are Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, Cinderella or Lady And The Tramp.

I guess only time will tell... But with Disney's trend of Platinum Editions slowly getting worse and worse and even the single disc re-releases getting worse and worse... I think now (after Pinocchio) is a good time to finish with the Platinum Collection and hopefully they will just start delivering some really good quality Bluray's.

I thought I remember reading that Nemo was delayed till next year, and we'll be getting another Pixar movie instead (in adiotion to Wall-e) which has yet to be anounced.

also, I believe we have had that box art for quite some time now.

I dont think the PE should stop, but I think Disney would be much wiser to re-shelve the older titles for people that didnt have a chance to get(Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King). It would make much more sense then trying to redo the PE and making them worse then the solid editions that were once avaible. If any of that made sense lol

The main point of not getting the animated classics soon is coz they're part of the PE's, but I bet that Aladdin will be out in a year or so.

am i the only one who thinks that a box set of maybe 4 animated titles on blu-ray would be nice. available for only one month or so and then taken away... wouldnt really work well but would be nice. im sure some kind of way to get all these out on blu-ray is out there but how without simultaneously releasing them...??

Right... which is why I said...

You're right... That would be the point... but we're talking about Disney... and they have a history of not following through with collections... so it's hard to believe that they will complete the Platinum Collection (which has already been devalued with the addition of titles that weren't originally included and the removal of titles that were.) The "Platinum Edition" banner no longer means much more than "2-Disc re-release of diminishing quality and standard".

They may have up there sleeves something along the line of the Limited Editions they did back when DVD's were first coming to the scene... One a month at a ridiculously high price... Since the titles they mentioned have already been mastered in hi-def... it wouldn't take much more than just throwing them out there with the same bonus features that were on their Platinum releases.

I am praying that is not the route they choose to take... but I really wouldn't put it past them. I could see them releasing a few of their huge hits relatively soon (before 2009 is out) on bluray... especially once bluray players take a huge price dip this holiday season (they are expected to drop to the $150 range for the holidays...) They will probably wait to announce any other titles until Sleeping Beauty is out and available.

would it be possible somehow since they seem to be promoting a lot do something like... go huge and somehow release 4 Platinum titles at one time? Only for blu-ray promotion... as in the fab four limited editions available for 6 months or something as platinum edition but still have substance? I mean they could work their butts off to release 4 amazing dvds/blu-rays. I mean just because they do more doesnt mean quality should suffer you know? I wouldn't put it past them either but my bet is we are either going to get a huge announcement that will either blow or minds about these on blu-ray or a big disappointment that will make us swing our fingers in the air and say woo-hoo. to me i think that if they did a box set or something and really worked hard on each seperate one and released them only for a very limited time then pushed them all back on the platinum calendar could work..

The thing with a boxed set is this... the last time they released a box set (other than sequel sets etc...) was the Limited Edition DVD titles. It was ridiculously expensive... hard to find... and was no different than if you just bought the included titles separately (except you got a box to hold them in.)

I don't think they would make a lot of money off of releasing 4 of the biggest sellers in a box set for a limited time, because it would without question be more expensive than it should and people would very likely look at it and go... "Eh... I've waited this long, I can wait a bit longer for it to be released alone."

So... as cool as it may sound.. I highly doubt a Fab 4 boxset will happen... possibly ever lol...

If these are the titles they expect to be releasing by the end of 2009... I am willing to bet they will release them ONLY on Bluray and they won't change a thing (except maybe add a bluray exclusive bonus feature or two...)

They will probably all keep the same artwork (like Finding Nemo) and have the same bonus features. That will be the quickest and simplest way for Disney to get these titles out on bluray... They could still be a part of the Platinum Collection and replaced by the 2nd round Platinum Edition when it's time comes (between 2 and 7 years down the road.)

yeah i can understand that. you don't think that they would actually take their time to create REAL PE's? My bet is they will either go huge or do nothing. i really want these on blu-ray asap but i dont want bare boned dvds.

I guess we will just have to wait and see...It seems that as of late, Disney ONLY knows how to do a bare-bones edition. Let's hope that changes and they get back to the good ole days of proper releases ! I still think it would be cool to see them do an extremely limited run of every title from the Animated Classics list... in order... Maybe 1 a month... Only 50,000 per title or something like that. I know that will never happen... but one can wish right ? ! haha

exactly ! maybe 100,000 even (around 2,000 per state)... a small number like that is bound to give Disney free publicity... suddenly huge rushes of people trying to get ahold of the title before it's gone at every store that sells it, every month... by time the schedule was finished it would be really intense for the bigger films, i'm willing to bet it... collector's would go crazy.

I didn't add those because bluray's homepage didn't have them listed...

If they're re-releasing them in Blu-Ray, are they also going to re-release them for DVD like Sleeping Beauty? I'm interested in buying Beauty and the Beast and Lion King on DVD, since I only have them on VHS, but can't buy them on Blu-Ray, since well... I don't have a Blu-Ray player.

Since Blu-ray is still a niche market right now taking any Blu-ray and making it OOP is a really bad ideal.

DVD isn't going anywhere. I'm sure whenever they are released on Blu-ray a re-release will happen on DVD.

That is until Blu-ray players hit $50 and we have $5 Blu-ray dump bins at Wal-Mart. :D I actually wouldn't mind seeing that.

Give it a few years... just like with DVD's. I'm willing to bet that when Bluray players take a huge price cut this holiday season... The Bluray's themselves will start appearing with smaller and smaller price tags...Not sure if anyone else has noticed... But DVD's have taken a price drop since the popularity of Bluray... And Bluray's have also been slowly getting less and less expensive. We will probably see them at a standard $19.99 rate before 2009 is out.

Excuse me,
But I cannot find anywhere that the rerelease of High School Musical 2 is arriving on blu-ray. If you have found it anywhere, can you please post a link.
Thanks
