I don't doubt that it is a totally different mix than the VHS. In order to create a 5.1 mix they would have had to start from scratch and no doubt the sound mixer for the DVD had totally different ideas on how it should sound. My guess is they were trying to be true to the mono sound of the original and just slightly widen the music with subtle effects. This was the design of several Disney DVD remixes including The Parent Trap, Pollyanna, Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson. The other side of the coin is the rediculously overdone EHTM (enhanced home theater mixes) that were used on some of the Platinum titles.[/quote]
It wasn't "broad mono:, the audio had trumpets and all on right, violins and all on left, and all that jazz.
