Winnie the Pooh 2.0 Stereo Mix. What Happened?!

I remember The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh having a 2.0 Stereo Mix to it, I heard in one of the old video tape versions of the film (the 1996 one to be exact). It was pretty awesome, the music sounded incredible! Here's the tape I heard it in:

But when I purchased the DVD, it had a channel-separated mono mix. What happened? Restoration problems? Lost record? If anyone knows what the heck I'm talking about, please help! AND, if anyone has a clip of the 1996 VHS, could you please post it. BUT NOT ON YOUTUBE, there's a strong chance it'll broadcast in mono.

It's a 5.1 (though subtle) mix. I have the first DVD and it is definitely 5.1 I don't know what the VHS sounded like, but perhaps it was mono that had been stereo enhanced or maybe the dolby surround just sounded fuller to you. In any case none of these remixes is the original sound which was mono.

Trust me, I know what I heard. There's even a 2.0 truly separated stereo music track on the Spanish track. Listen to it, it's actually pretty cool. Plus, on the DVD menu of both DVDs, the music is in stereo (use headphones to really hear the effect).

I don't doubt that it is a totally different mix than the VHS. In order to create a 5.1 mix they would have had to start from scratch and no doubt the sound mixer for the DVD had totally different ideas on how it should sound. My guess is they were trying to be true to the mono sound of the original and just slightly widen the music with subtle effects. This was the design of several Disney DVD remixes including The Parent Trap, Pollyanna, Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson. The other side of the coin is the rediculously overdone EHTM (enhanced home theater mixes) that were used on some of the Platinum titles.

PS Before everyone jumps all over me saying how much they love the EHTM mixes, let me say some of them were quite nicely done and some *cough* Mary Poppins *cough* were an abomination.

It wasn't "broad mono:, the audio had trumpets and all on right, violins and all on left, and all that jazz.

That's just the Masterpiece VHS, right?

I think we own that... if not I'll check the library. The library's stuff is often worn to Hell though so I'm hoping it's the same one I have.
