shocking discovery on beauty and the beast!
we all know how much we love disney films, not only do we remember the songs and characters..(and for some, the ORIGINAL colors) but even to the extent of memorizing the characters movement.
much to my surprise, disney didn't only change the colors and background for the beauty and the beast PE edition to suit the newly inserted song...but they also tweaked cogsworth!!! it was one of my favorite piece of animation, highly expressive and dramatic but nooooo they had to tone him down! and all this while i thought lion king was the first animation victim!!!
the particular scene im referring to is the scene when cogsworth says
"but but but....WHYYYYY?"
exactly disney...WHY???????????????????????????????????????

It's horrible that they've done these types of things. While I do prefer the second, you should really leave a film alone with all its imperfections.
Thankfully, I haven't noticed anything major like this with the other Platinums (besides the "wave" over Ursula's cauldron, the suggestive knee of TLM priest disappearing, and the edit of the questionable lyric in Aladdin). This and TLK were probably most affected because they went to Imax. If the rest had, we'd most likely see more animation clean-ups (such as, say, added faces in the PP flying scene).

Listening to most often lately:
Christina Aguilera ~ "Cruz"
Sombr ~ "homewrecker"
Megan Moroney ~ "Beautiful Things"

Nice video... but they're stretched a bit (the DVD looks like it was stretched to fullscreen).
Did you use avisynth to do the side-by-side? With the incredibly small size of YouTube's viewing window, I'd reccomend removing all the black pixels to make each one a bit bigger (or use a StackVertical since both videos are/should be widescreen and each one will be larger)
They've modified way more than that... Let's not forget the "stuttering Beast line"... And then there's the SFX cloud, the kneecap in The Little Mermaid, the kitty line in Aladdin (Also Arabian Nights, although that was ALWAYS released as such), Saludos Amigos, Melody Time, don't even get me started on Make Mine Music...
So yeah. This is why I hate a lot of Disney's DVDs. Laserdisc versions of the Classics ftw

im just shocked to discover this...ive always thought that for beauty and the beast it was just...refined lines....or details.... on backgrounds and characters....not a total makeover!i still prefer the original animation.its more unique...
as for the older classics, purpotedly they were done because it was 'offensive'....or cel placement error (bambi). i couldn't bear to watch the imax version and the laserdisc version side by side from start to finish..i just couldn't bear it if i discover more.
farewell to this and the lion king crocodiles.

hah, thats weird, I wonder why they wasted time changing that.
I like really like Beauty and the Beast, but I don't really mind that change. It's just random to me, like I'm totally lost as to why they changed that gesture.
But I could see why this would upset fans of the original theatrical Beauty and the Beast. So it's good the didn't change it on the original theatrical option on the DVD.
For me personally, I would only mind major changes such as dramatic color changes, or redubbing and dialouge modifying. But minor things like the SFX in The Lion King, or the infamous boner knee whatever it is on TLM, those changes don't really bother me.

So it's only changed in the Special Edition Version? That does not make sense at all lol.SleepingBeautyAurora wrote:I just watched the Platinum DVD and if you set it to Original Theatrical Version then Cogsworth still makes the original hand gestures.
I've known about this in the earlier threads when the DVD first came out.
I think the needed a clip in between so that the change in quality wouldn't show that much.jeremy88 wrote:hah, thats weird, I wonder why they wasted time changing that.
.
The original clip looks like a piece of art, a real Disney Classic.
The new clips looks like a cheap sequel. As that's the same look as the added scene "Human again", they needed to change it. The clip of the beast right after this one looks like a cheap sequel too.

I wonder how much they've got payed for saying that in the media.ichabod wrote:Welcome to 2002 people!
It is common knowledge that the directors *hated* the original piece of animation and it was they specifically who wanted it reworked. They've stated this in the past, I'm pretty sure they mention on the DVD too in the commentary or somewhere else.
Everyone would agree that the old clip looks perfect. You can't hate it.
Especially when the new clip is clearly worse.

LOL. I'm pretty sure there's at least one logical fallacy in there somewhere.Marky_198 wrote:Everyone would agree that the old clip looks perfect. You can't hate it.

Yeah, the "original theatrical version" on the DVD is not the original theatrical version.
The "stuttering Beast line" is still changed on the DVD, the top and bottom were cut off (whether or not you agree with me on what the OAR is), the colors are way brighter, etc.

could it be possible that the reason the animation is changed was simply because that dramatic movement didn't look so great when it was 20 feet tall on an IMAX screen... they probably changed it to the far less dramatic gesture on the special edition because it didn't play right on the IMAX screen.

Try telling that to the professional animators who worked on the sequence.
I didn't know that, but I suspected it. If it's the directors who make the change, then I respectfully accept it. After all, it's their film not mine.Bodster wrote:Welcome to 2002 people!
