I don't think it's wasteful or hypocritical at all. If the second disc is used intelligently, then the plastic would not have been pointless.

I really would like to see a cardboard cover for the DVD just as they did for the soundtrack! Just don't make it feel cheap.

If you really want to talk reducing, then don't buy the DVD at all. Download it from iTunes when it becomes available.

Also, more companies are choosing to use recycled plastic for the DVD covers

No, I think its actually more hypocritical for Disney to carry on crapping out pointless DVD re-releases (such as Sword in the Stone and Schoolhouse Rock: Election Collection) in old style packaging (and with pointless slipcovers too) and make a special once in a lifetime exception for Wall-E than to release Wall-E as normal.

One exception does not make a company "green".

They have these new carbon neutral cases, that are made out of cardboard. There Will Be Blood was in one. Perhaps they use the same (I hope not, those are really flimsy) for the dvd of Wall-E?
But I think I'm jumping ahead here, the film isn't even released in theaters here. I still have to wait a whole month .

Well, it's way too late for them to "avoid being hypocritical" considering all the toys they're going to sell, despite the anti-consumerism message.

Hell, they even gave out free watches in most theaters. So it's quite obvious they don't actually care about the movie's message.

The movie was also against downloads if you've seen the movie. So the only true solution would be to just not see the movie.

LOL. Surely it wasn't against legal downloads from iTunes?

Having not seen the film yet (won't until september...), so far it sounds awesome if not a little too preachy and thus hypocritical, considering Pixar's nature as a capitalized consumer product.

LMFAO! Please tell me how it is against downloading? I didn't say to download it illegally. IMO, the BEST way to reduce the need to use natural resources and to reduce trash, is to download music and movies, not saying to do so illegally. I swear, there are many words to describe you, but you are not worth me getting suspended or banned. Not worth it at all.

For all those people who haven't seen the movie such as yukitora and Siren, there is a scene where they advertise to change the color of their clothes from red to blue, and with just a click of the button on their computers, people are able to do so.

One of the supposably many themes of the movie to be less reliant on technology, so in other words, spend less of your life on iTunes.

The whole "go green" movement is pure BS anyway, as there is NO true way to reduce all your pollutant carbon-footprint etc. Trust me, you're not saving the environment by buying a hybrid.

Spending less times on iTunes is not the same as completely distancing yourself away from it.

In the case of dealing with minimizing carbon emissions, than downloading the movie rather than the physically product is far more 'green'.

Same goes with using hybrids. You're right, you're not saying the world, but you are (supposedly) preserving the environment more than using normal cars.

The fact that Pixar made a film called "Cars" (and has a sequel coming) shows that for all Wall-E's environmental "message", it is somewhat hypocritical of Pixar. I in no way expect any "green" Wall-E merchandise. If they do, it will perhaps be even more hypocritical of Pixar and Disney (as I said about the notion of Wall-E having a Carbon Neutral DVD release).

When all is said and done, every Disney movie, be it Disney or Pixar is about selling cheap plastic toys imported from China (and probably made in near sweatshop conditions) for a huge mark-up. That's not slagging off any of the creatives at Pixar or Disney - that's slagging off almost every single business doing business today.

Damn you Pixar! How dare you make this movie! Hypocrits!

You know I think I'll just enjoy WALL-E for what it is and not expect it to save the world, and be thankful that Pixar is putting out quality films, the primary purpose of which is to entertain, and not insulting me by cranking out crap like Shrek 17. To each his own I guess.

Hidden stuff (spoilerized) At the point where WALL-E tosses the rubber duck into his ice chest there is a bottle of Leak Less amongst the trash.

Well, you can always shun modern conveniences and just walk everywhere, live in a cave without electricity/gas/etc., bathe in a river, eat natural vegetation that you gather in the fields and forests, hunt for animals with spears/bows and arrows, and construct clothes out of animal hide. But even then you're still leaving footprints...

here are a few Pixar character cameos in Wall- E, Just highlight it
(courtesy of Wikipedia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WALL-E

EVE blasts a Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story during the movie aside from a dusty Rex appearing in the beginning on WALL-E's conveyor belt of junk (in between 2 bowling pins). A toy of Mike of Monsters, Inc. also appears on this conveyer belt. One of the objects WALL-E puts in his lunchbox for keeping closely resembles the Piston Cup from Cars. During the closing credits, mosaic versions of Nemo and the sea turtles from Finding Nemo appear. Wally B. from The Adventures of André and Wally B. also appears flying across the screen during the montage in the end credits. Also, A113, an important code in the movie, is a phrase that has been put into every PIXAR film to date. John Ratzenberger also voices one of the characters, as he has done for every Pixar full length release.

Cars spread no theme "Drive more cars!" so how does it go against Wall-e's pro-green message?

Stanton's main point of Wall-e was not to show people how they are mistreating earth, but Wall-e and Eve's love story. Plus, the message goes out to buying more than we need. It's about people buying more clothes than they desire, eating more than can be consumed, and not cleaning up after themselves. I see no harm in buying one toy (that is not being mass produced because I can find no Wall-e toys at my local Toys R Us) just to go along with the movie I just watched. My transforming Wall-e is the best toy I ever bought, and I don't think the toys are cheap plastic at all too. It is built very well.

Pixar's Wall-E

Post by Disney Duster »

So I saw Wall-E. Last Saturday. June 28.

I don't know what's worse about this film. To suggest, by having live-actors portray the fit humans before they leave Earth and animation portray the fat blobs they become, that to be animated is to be less human, particularly visualized in a row of pictures that show the good "real people" captains slowly morph into the bad cartoon ones.

Or the suggestion that two robots can feel love in one of the best-crafted, most emotional displays of it in cinema, and thus be more human than any of us, as they are more than any of the humans in the film.

Sorry, I won't let Pixar tell me nonfeeling robots are as feeling as humans. Or that love is something that can come from man-made machines. Artificial intelligence? Try Artifical Love. Two robots are everyone's favorite movie couple? Don't you see, the audience is what feels emotion from the robot romantics, the robots don't feel it themselves!

Oh, and WTF was up with the resolution being Eve trying too long to bring back Wall-E with memories of what made him him, but what finally brings him back is touching, which he had never done before? I guess bringing someone back with something they've always wanted to do makes more sense to Pixar than bringing them back with something they've always done? Making someone be themselves again with something they've never been instead of what they've always been? Nope. Wall-E has to realize he loves Eve before he comes back because he touches her. Since when does touching someone who you've fallen for before you touched them make you feel how you used to about them?

Never underestimate the power of one singular touch, Mike. It's the equivalent of the magic tear, the true love's kiss, the utterance of three powerful words, the hand reaching out, etc. ;)

Just got back from seeing it. It was a very beautiful film in every possible way. The only slight negative I have is that all the running around on the spaceship got me slightly a little bored but I was still in awe the entire time.

And really, I didn't see the film as being "stop buying stuff." I saw it more of technology becoming too advanced so that it does everything for us. Other than the advertisements, I didn't see anything that screamed "we are overconsumers!" Nobody even bought anything from what I remember. It was just technology is doing everything for us, that's becoming the norm. They didn't buy all that technology, everybody alive lived there -- it's their way of life now.

And, I interrepted that last scene, that it took a while for all the memories to register for Wall-E. Like, they were all there, but the touch is the one thing that activated it. Sort of like Dory, when she saw the address and it all came rushing back to her. Something like that.

But MAN -- that last scene was dramatic. I happened to go to a showing that was almost all kids, and they were yelling/laughing/screaming throughout the whole film (but not enough to distract from it), but there was complete total, dead silence when EVE held his hand at the end. If somebody even so much coughed I would have jumped a mile!

I really did love this film, Pixar is so good at creating an atmosphere/mood. I really can't imagine anything that could be done to improve upon this film, it defines the word masterpiece. Dare I say it... I may have even shed a tear or two. It's in the Top 5 of IMDB's Top 250 (but will go down in due time).
