Same Sex
Uh... we were already discussing same-sex marriages here. Why did you feel so compelled to make a new thread about it - only to express your malicious opinion of it without any reason? Other than "it's disgusting", of course...
As for me? I believe it's a natural genetic anomaly, and should not be so hatefully shunned and punished. I support same-sex marriages for the rights and benefits that they allow couples, which civil unions cannot. Moreover, last I checked, our system had a supposed "separation of church and state" thing goin' on - and I definitely don't see the objective separation between the two in this case. The main reason the legality of same-sex marriages is being held back is 'cause of the Christian religion's belief that it's "wrong". But like I just said, I thought we weren't supposed to be a Christian-based government? There goes that happy little ideal concept... e_e

Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

While I am not one to try and stop anyone's freedom of speech, I think I have to agree with Michelle. This is a fun forum, and as Paka pointed out, we've already had a (largely) INTELLIGENT discussion over this.michelle wrote:I'm sorry, but I really really think this is an inappropriate topic to be discussed here.
Grunches - your comment, without any supporting statement, makes you come off as ignorant and childish. Now I don't wish to be offensive to anyone, but I would like to state that prejudicial and hateful statements like that offer nothing productive to this, or any other, forum. You are simply trying to provoke a reaction out of the board by referring to homosexual couples as "disgusting".
So please, if you wish to discuss this matter seriously, do so in the appropriate forum, and try and structure your argument just a bit more.
Besides, my feelings on the subject (as I have mentioned elsewhere), are quite the opposite: love and sex are where you find it - it is not up to the law to decide who you can/cannot be with. What I find disgusting is the persecution of people who just want to be with other people (after all, as Barbra says "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world"). However, how I feel about this subject is completely besides the point - really, this is inappropriate behaviour, and I do not wish to see this site that I visit daily become the playground for hurtful comments such as these.

Grunches, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the way you worded things leaves you open for a whole lot of heated retorts...I don't think anything good can come out of this one w/out it getting ugly.

I just want to point out, these days there are two definitions of marriage. That's religious and the law.
Now people get married for lots of reasons. All the same sex marriages in America (and beyond) are only for "lawful" marriages. The President of America, let alone the state officials, don't have the power to affect religion or religious policies. Allowing Gay marriages in certain states isn't going to alter the Christian teachings - that's upto the chruch in question. Look at all the fuss in America and Britain about Gay Bishops. I doubt any same sex marriages are being performed as religious ceremonies anywhere in America, and if so, they'll be against the wishes of the affiliated church.
Both definitions of marriage are primarily about sharing and showing the love between two people, but there's more than just that. Married couples, by law, have different rights - especially when it comes to property, next of kin and death. Is it fair gay people should miss out on this? America is supposed to be a land where everyone is created equal and "exporting" the value of human rights across the globe. You'd think they'd better get all their human rights issues sorted out at home first. Now it looks like President Bush is wanting to quash human rights, and doesn't believe everybody is created equal.
Both reasons for marriage are different. If you are religious, just ignore the civil marriages. They're like Disney sequels. One type of marriage doesn't affect the reason or the "specialness" of the other.
As for President Bush wanting to change the law - it's all just smoke and mirrors. Gay marriages hurt nobody. And if President Bush really was concerned about families, he'd be working to ban divorce, not making it easier and easier. Just think about that. Elisabeth Taylor and her multiple high-profile marriages (and lots of others like her) have done more to impact bad family values on the public than gay marriages ever will. I'm sure more of you know divorced couples or the resultant single parents than gay couples. What message about marriage is that sending out? Apart from hypocrisy?
Condering everything else going on in the world today, it's nothing more than a cheap re-election ploy. Hopefully most of the clever and astute UltimateDisney members will be able to see the bigger picture, and be more worried about the pain, suffering, hatred, crime, environmental damage, corporate scandals, general unfairness and economic unequities in the world today than two people living together and hurting nobody.

Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database
I understand people's desire to voice their opinions and discuss their viewpoints, but I for one am sick of coming to a Disney forum and seeing these topics pop up. I have been trying to ignore them, but I finally had to comment on this growing trend on UD. This forum is a site I normally come to when I do not want to discuss the current events of the day. I believe there are other places that are more appropriate to discuss these sorts of things.

people get their panties in a wad when someone has a pic that shows a womans midriff in their signature because children visit the forum but yet the same children want to 'discuss'
the topic of same sex marriages? now this is not directed towards the obviously mature posters and i realize that this is in the off topic section but i'm going to try once to discourage this thread. besides the fact that there is already a gay marriage argument thread, the first post is stated in a way that couldn't even be considered serious debate. lets lighten it up.
why couldn't this have just been a who's cutest thread

I agree. This forum has always been a great place for good, clean, fun discussion. But lately threads have popped up that haven't followed that pattern. In my opinion if they're continued to be allowed, the forum will enter into a downward spiral both in quality posts and quality members.catNC wrote:but I for one am sick of coming to a Disney forum and seeing these topics pop up.
Luke, I think that you should put a ban on all religious/political threads in the effort of keeping this a "good, clean, fun" forum. That's just my opinion though.
Um... having Luke ban religious and political topics on this forum is just promoting an "ignorance is bliss" attitude. This thread is already in the Off-Topic section - why is it so wrong to discuss something like this? You guys remind me of the rabbits of Cowslip's warren in Watership Down - "Just stop talking about it." Oy...
If talking about real issues bugs so many people, than I suggest Luke make a separate "RL Discussion" board, instead of turning the forum into some sort of totalitarian state. "We will have fun, dammit!"

But Paka, as catNC pointed out, there are far more appropriate places to discuss things pertaining to religion and politics. But I guess if enough people here are interested on discussing RL issues with one another then I do think a "RL Discussion" forum would be the best solution. That way those of us who wish to discuss things such as non-disney DVDs/Movies (or whatever else) may do so in the off-topic forum without having to sort through all of the "RL threads".
