The Godfather: Special Edition?

Post by disneyfella »

i had heard about this coming out sometime this year, but have found ZERO evidence to support this. does anyone have any information about this at all? the box set has gone down in price in the past months, and i've been so tempted to just purchase it. the only thing holding me back is that spending that much money on dvds when special editions are right around the corner. PLEASE somebody tell me what the rumors and stuff are about this (these) tites!!!

Actually, there is a stand-alone disc of "The Godfather" coming out May 11, but the "Special Edition" would be the existing (high-priced) 5-disc boxset for the trilogy. The new disc is simply going to be identical to disc one from the set, but with the retail price of just $19.99. You will be missing out on the bonus disc (Disc 5) of the trilogy by going this route. Then again, most of Disc 5 doesn't play on my Toshiba player.

While the new disc will be identical in content (the movie, the audio commentary), it will feature a brand new digital clean-up for the transfer, done by Lowry Digital. This is an improvement over the previous disc, which many found dissapointing in terms of picture quality, I hear.

No, it won't. Paramount considered doing this at one point, but the word straight from the horse's head (namely, the mouth part...of rep Martin Blythe) is that it will be IDENTICAL to the box set's first disc.

What Luke said.

I considered (for a moment, anyway) possibly selling/trading the Boxset when I first read the news on this...thank GOD I didn't do anything quickly.

it will be stupid of Paramount to make the one disc better than the box set transfer unless they offer a trade in for us who bought the box set.

Hmm, the last I news I heard was that it was getting a new transfer. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Yeah, I'm always of the "in for a penny, in for a pound" philosophy, so I tend to get the boxset of things. Besides of which, I liked the whole trilogy, so I would hate to think I have to upgrade.

Nothing to add, except this from DVDAnswers.com:
Paramount Home Entertainment have kindly sent over the artwork for the The Godfather which stars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. This single disc release will be available to own from the 11th May this year. We should also point out that Paramount will no longer be updating the transfer on this one. We had originally heard that the folks at Lowry Digital Images would be cleaning up the transfer, although that will no longer be the case. We have no details on why this has been changed I'm afraid, but we'll let you know if we hear anything. For now though, here's our first look at the official region one artwork:
