Sleeping Beauty Confirmed for DVD AND BLU-RAY in 2008 !!!

Some previews of the Bluray which I think surfaced after a bluray tour at the East Coast.

This would give you a clear idea of how beautiful the picture would look like !

Yeah I know the chat sucks, but look at the resoloution with the dragon scene I bet it never looked this good even when it was on theatres during it's release.

Well, I took some screencaps from the SE to compare the aspect ratios. It turns out the PE actually adds picture all around the frame, especially on the sides. So it seems like the new 2.55:1 ratio (which may not be the original theatrical ratio) at least shows more info rather than crops the 2.20:1 frame like we had feared.

(BTW, the SE is from a 2.35:1 35mm print, so it's already bound to lose picture on all sides from the Technirama negative and/or 70mm prints.)

I'm still puzzled as to where Disney got the idea 2.55:1 for Sleeping Beauty when all evidence points to 2.20:1 (for 70mm) and 2.25:1 (for the original negatives). Perhaps the 2.55:1 is derived from the 2.25:1 negative, and could still be losing some % of information on the top and bottom, but not sides (as evident from the 2.35:1 35mm DVD caps)

The one of the eggs and flour is totally amazing! I can't even think how the whole movie will look. I'm getting really excited about this release.

Did they add more sparkles/pixie dust in the screencap of the flour and eggs? Or was that just the flash of a camera? Anyhow, the color restoration looks very bright! Is it supposed to be like when they restored Snow White, it's like you're looking at the actual cel?

OK, 2099net enters the ring again (having had experience of something similar on HD DVD with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

Firstly, I'll admit that the "movie mail" feature looks useless. But I'm not convinced the "chat" feature is.

I see that there is a pause option on the chat menu bar, so I assume this will be an synchronous playback across all participants of the chat. Actually, that's quite good! (Stop booing, it is!)

Imagine an UD "viewing party" where everyone watches the movie at the exact same time, or pauses at exactly the same place, and can comment on bits of the movie as it happens. Not exactly essential, I'll admit, but not exactly a kick in the teeth either. The Harry Potter implementation was reasonably slick. I consider the ability to control the movie more important than the actually "chatting". It ideal for screenings between friends over the phone, but seperated by location. I can, and did, actually see a "value" to it.

Remember it's optional.

Oh, and is anyone complaining about the colours of the Blu-ray version?

This could be Disney's best restoration yet! Considering (it seems) they actually improved on the already fantastic S.E. version!

It's so specky some parts of the BG actually looks CG.... which might be annoying.

That's exactly what I thought! It kinda looks too bright to look like it was animated by hands and not computers.
And I still think the pink is too bright. Maybe this is the way it was intended to look, but I think I'd kinda miss the "wooden" look of my video and and the SE. The little darker tones made it more peasant like and IMO fit better into the usual "Disney colors" and tones of the 50s.
I hope somebeody understands what I mean.

UM EXCUSE ME? Are they pixies? No, they are Three Good Fairies. They have fairy dust, or Disney dust. Hehe, still love ya Kram. But did you notice this restoration blow's Snow White's out of the water? Why would we want it to look like Snow White's when it's way better? I think the ones who restored Snow White restored Sleeping Beauty's SE! I wonder who's restoring this...?

Anyway, I, it looks dark in there, I think the person did use their flash camera, and so I hope that is the reason the restoration looks too bright. The flash of the camera. Look at Flora. She's lost the difference between her bodice and and skirt colors, and the lines seperating them, and those little black details!

Dottie, I thought the 50's films were supposed to be brighter than the features before them, but Sleeping Beauty was darker. I mean, it was supposed to look like Gothic tapestries and they mixed black into every color! I agree I prefer the darkness of the old look, but the clarity and sparkling colors of the new look. Let's hope the camera flash is what's making it hurt our eyes!

Oh, and steve, I forgot...Maleficent may look greener in one place and bluer in another place depending on lighting conditions. It's darker and bluer in her domain. Also, she's especially bluer at night when trying to stop Phillip.

Well, at HomeTheaterForum, David Boulet had this to say after going to Disney's special presentation:

Oh yes, and that 2.55:1 aspect ratio you may have heard about... I received assurances that this aspect ratio is in fact the native aspect ratio of the original photographed negatives and was not achieved by cropping any picture content. For those of you wondering why I’m making a point of this, there’s a bit of controversy among Sleeping Beauty aficionados about this 2.55:1 choice for the Blu-ray Disc since the original theatrical aspect ratio was actually narrower given 70 mm and 35 mm projection at the time. Disney’s choice to go with 2.55:1 may be controversial with regard to original theatrical aspect ratio, but it’s not controversial with regard to the original filmed aspect ratio. Once we can get our hands on some real image captures to compare among the various incarnations we’ll confirm (our review of the Blu-ray Disc in the fall will try to clarify issues related to aspect ratio).

So even though it's strange, it seems like the height will match what was originally seen (and what we received in previous pre-2003 transfers) while the sides will actually go beyond what audiences saw in 1959.

It's the flash of the camera. You can see the same type of glint on the bottom black bar of that image.

Supposedly it's Lowry Digital/DTS Digital Images, the same guys who did the restorations for all of the non-fab four Platinums (along with Alice in Wonderland).

Thanks for the aspect ratio info, Disneykid, I had a feeling Disney wouldn't let a title concentrating on the perfect, originally intended, collector's release of the film have a wrong ratio. I wonder what Escapay will think now. I hope he'll be pleased. It looks great!

Really? Hmm...well this one looks pretty good, I actually like it except for the disappearing lines and brightness which better be only the camera flash. But I hope they re-do Cinderella's and fix things. They're actually are things I know are wrongly colored. The day I show why will come.

Can I ask how you know? Though I guess we'll know for sure when we have it, right? Is there a way to find out now?
