UD Book Club

Post by PeterPanfan »

I love reading, and I'm sure many others on this forum enjoy it, too.

I was wondering if Ultimate Disney could start a book club. It doesn't have to be official or anything. It can be just a few members whi really like reading. We could pick a book each month, and then read a certain number of pages each week, and discuss it.

I thought it would be a fun idea, and a fun thing to do if the summer gets boring.

If we can't do it, it's totally fine. Just an idea. :)

That sounds like a great idea, Dan!!! The only thing that I can think of that would be a con would be that some of us like different kinds of books, so we'd have to make sure that we pick kind of neutral books, I guess. Also, hopefully the books would be "popular" enough that we could easily get a copy at our local library. Maybe we could learn the new title about 2 weeks before we need it, so we can request it (our library system allows you to request books and even have them shipped to you, which can be helpful when wanting a title that is always checked out). Just my ideas!

Yeah. Maybe we can "nominate" books and then make a poll and vote for the book. Wow, I hope we can do this, because it's sounds really fun. :P

Love, love, love this idea! I've always wanted to join a book club. I think a great (and fair) way to choose what we read could be to assign each member a number and have a random number generator pick a number. Then whoever owns that number picks the next book we read. The draw and selection would always be announced a week or two in advance to allow members of the club to secure a copy of the book.

But what ever method is used, I am fully on board with the idea. I love reading, but all my friends are about an inch away from being illiterate (they are the type who will "wait for the movie" because "all good books become movies") so I never have anyone to discuss what I'm reading with.

Awesome idea! I'm gonna unofficially nominate a book. I picked it up a few weeks ago but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies.

I haven't read Bambi or Watership Down, although I own Bambi(the book) and have seen the movie of Watership Down(along with Bambi.)

Widdi, I love your idea for the selection of the books.

So I guess we can start nominating books.

Rules for nominating books

*You can have already read it.

*You must be able to have a way of getting it. (Whether it be buying it, renting it from a library, or borrowing it from a friend.)

*You must actually read the book, and not copy/paste reviews. We can tell if you have done so, and you will end up embarassing yourself later.

*You cannot complain if a book you nominated is not the book we have chosen. It is completely random, and the choice of the book does not reflect who nominated it.

*If you decide to read ahead, you cannot post information about the book that goes beyond what the required number of pages for that week was. People do not like to be spoiled.

I will make a list of books that are nominated.

Deadlines for nominations will end Wednesday at 11:59 PM.

I nominate:

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.

EDIT- The rule for deciding the book each month is this:

Once it has reached the deadline for nominations, I will randomly chose a book. I promise that I will not pick my favorite, and that I will absoultely pick it randomly. :)

This will be really fun!

This reminds me of The Jane Austen Book Club,.

Anyway, I don't know if I'll partake in this or not (I'll probably drop in now and again if it's a book I already read), but it sounds like a fun thread to lurk and read.

I nominate:

The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy

I've been wanting to read it for a while now, if it gets picked I'll finally have a reason for picking it up.

Interesting idea. After having read a lot in college, I don't read so much anymore (well, read for pleasure that is -- read for school is about the only thing I do!) due to my busy schedule. I did just finish Prince Caspian for the umpteenth time but would love to read something new... maybe this will be a way to focus myself.

Are we talking fiction only or can this be non-fiction?

If non-fiction is allowed, then I nominate:
How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else by Michael Gates Gill

I actually have it checked out of the library right now, but I haven't read it yet, since I took out 4 books.

I'd really love to participate, but like Escapay already said I might not read every book or maybe just lurk here and if I know the book contribute.
But I would like to nominate Bill Bryson's "Notes from a small island" since already have it and his books are hilarious.

You do not have to partake in every discussion, because some books don't appeal to everyone.

Hmm, I was hoping only fiction books, because there really is not much speculation or anything like that with non-fiction books. But if the majority of you want to read non-fiction, I guess we can do some of them, too.

I also want to advise everyone that the books should be written in English, and must be available internatianlly, or something you could easily buy off of Amazon.

I nominate:

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
The Host by Stephanie Meyer
This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

So far the nominated books are:

Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Eleven Minutes by Paulo Cohelo
The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy
How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else by Michael Gates Gill
Notes from a Small Island- Bill Bryson
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
The Host by Stephanie Meyer
This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams
Emma by Jane Austen
Nowhere in Africa by Stefanie Zweig
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Marley and Me by Josh Grogan
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews
Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult
Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician: A Novel by Daniel Wallace

I was hoping I could actually bump up the deadline to tonight by about 10:00 PM, because I will be busy tomorrow and Wednesday nights, and won't really be online. I will then write down the names of the books on pieces of paper, shake them up in a hat (old fashioned, I know), and then choose one. The chosen paper will be the book we read for June. We will have thirty days to read the book, and will read a certain number of pages each week, depending on how long the book is.

Example:

200 page book: 50 pages a week
300 page book- around 75 pages a week
400 page book- 100 pages a week

This may seem like a lot, but it is summer, and we are less busy than when school was in session, and if you really put your mind to it and read, I think you'll find that you'll really be enjoying it. How cliche.

Anyway, you have until 10:00 PM tonight to nominate any more books.

EDITED with more nominations, plus my nomination of Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult.

That really is a great idea!

I will surely participate if I can find the books! There's only a few stores here that sell books written in English and I'm not sure if there are any libraries renting English books. But hey, I'll do my best to find them because this is such a good idea! I love reading and sharing it with other people looks fun!

So, after there's a list of nominees, we'll vote on which book we're interested in?

If only fiction books are allowed, or even if not, here are some suggestions for fiction books:

"The Plague Dogs" by Richard Adams

"Emma" by Jane Austen

"Nowhere in Africa" by Stefanie Zweig (this book will be available in German, at least, since it was originally in German!)

"Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott (surely this must be easily available in different languages!)

I have a long book list, but 99% of the books on there are non-fiction! Here are more non-fiction books:

"Marley & Me" by John Grogan

"Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Alborn

"Home: A Memoir of My Early Years" by Julie Andrews

"Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll" by M. G. Lord

"The Barbie Chronicles: A Living Doll Turns Forty" by Yona Zeldis McDonough

I have a lot more books written down, but I'm not sure if people would be intersted in them!

I'll nominate:

Image
Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician: A Novel by Daniel Wallace

(And, if we're doing non-fiction... DisneyWar by James B. Stewart and High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton by Ann Coulter).

Amy, I'll put all the fiction books you listed, plus "Marley and Me", "Tuesdays with Morrie", and "Home" on there. My library doesn't have the Barbie books.

Aaron, I'll put the Daniel Wallace book on there (wow, he has my first name and your last name, haha), but not the Ann Coulter one, because I don't want this to turn into a big political discussion.

Remember, 10:00 PM TONIGHT!

I'm going to be nice and let the majority vote.

I randomly selected three pieces of paper from a hat.

The books chosen were:

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

Each person interested in being in the book club will vote for a book.

All you have to do it post your vote in this thread. Do not vote for whatever everyone else is voting for. Vote for which book you think you would enjoy reading the most.

A brief synopsis of each book:

Twilight-When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret. What Bella doesn't realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And, it might be to late to turn back...

A Great and Terrible Beauty-In perhaps stark contrast to the Harry Potter stories central character Gemma is sent to a less than magical repressive boarding school in England where she discovers a magical world. After witnessing her mother's death she is transported to the afore mentioned magical world that was actually involved in her mother's death. There, she uncovers a mystery, a conspiracy and a world of magic and deception. "Beauty" centers on teenager Gemma Doyle, a free spirit raised in India who is suddenly confronted by harsh realities and an entirely other world.

Angels and Demons-Angels and Demons follows world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who is summoned to a Swiss research facility (CERN) to analyze a mysterious symbol seared into the chest of a murdered physicist. He discovers evidence of the unimaginable, the rebirth of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth.

The choice is up to you.

Deadline for voting is tomorrow(Tuesday) at 6:00 PM EST.

Well considering I nominated eleven out of the twenty-six..

But I promise everyone that those books were written on the three papers I chose. If you don't believe me, then that's your problem. I am completely honest when I tell you those were the ones that I picked.

Anyway, I suppose I'll vote for Twilight, as I've been meaning to read that for a whileeeeeeeeeee..
