Something for bumping this thread, but have you guys seen the French movie "The Triplets of Belleville"? I bring it up because both it and Pixar's film portray something somewhat sensitive; the portrayal of morbidly obese people, mainly Americans.

Its no joke that there's an obesity problem in the US, all somewhat caused, according to the storyline in "Wall-e", a life of comfort and rich foods. This has been the butt of many a comedian's joke, including the infamous South Park boys. But all of that has been in good fun, often remembering people that obesity is a problem that we need to watch out for. But the portrayal of obesity in Belleville and now Wall-e might bring something different to the table, and could end up being disastrous for Pixar if not done right.

In Belleville when the main character's grandson gets kidnapped and taken to America, we discover that everyone is extremely obese, at times its a gruesome sight. The fillmakers are playing on the fact that the US has the biggest obesity numbers due to a life of comfort. But the problem is that EVERYONE was fat, and the filmmakers made it somewhat clear that because they were all obsessed with food. Worst of all, they didn't make any attempts at making it funny, or even cleverly stating "its all a joke".

As everyone knows, obesity isn't always caused by constant eating or a lazy lifestyle. Sometimes its generated by diseases which are out of the person's reach. So saying that obesity is exclusively created by food and that it only attacks Americans is unfair, especially if no effort is made towards making it funny (as in, this is a JOKE, meaning that it isn't a real portrayal of life).

As you all know, Wall-e takes the same route as Belleville and aims to portray the human race (if the trailers, impressions and early reviews are to be believed, Americans) as lazy, fat people who got used to a life of comfort so good they lost the ability to walk and are now using flying chairs to move around.

Its been stated time and time again about how this is criticism aimed towards consumerism in modern times. But will their message get lost in a sea of mean spirited jokes that will make the film look like its making fun of a problem that isn't always caused by a certain lifestyle or what you eat?

Now I want to see the film even more. I doubt the Pixar folks would be that mean enough to do such a wild portrayal of fat people, but we haven't seen the film, so everything's up in the air so to speak.

Don't worry - I believe the Maltese have beaten the Americans at obesity levels. We're certainly at the no. 1 spot in Europe (followed by Greece, I think). Recently (as I said at the beginning) I think it was said that rates of obesity here actually beat those of the US.

Obesity can be caused by disease (as can being unhealthly underweight) but generally it is caused by lifestyle. And I don't mean a wild, out of control lifestyle either. The fact is most people these days have easy access to food, most processed food is unhealthy, and most people have office jobs requiring very little excercise. These alone are a big 1-2-3 whammy when it comes to fighting expanding waistlines.

I don't think it's fair to take offense that America is being singled out - its more than a problem in all of the Western World (and I believe over the past decade its becoming a major problem in China too).

Personally, I'm overweight, and I know why. I mainly eat pre-prepared ready meals which are just heated up, and I work on computers so I get little excersise. The problem is, three or four days a week I'm out of my house from 6:00am to gone 7:30pm and when I get in I have approx 2 or 2 and a half hours before I go to bed ready for the next day's early morning wake-up. So the last thing I want to do is spend time making a proper meal, waiting for it to cook and then clean the dishes. And even if I was inclined to join a gym, I wouldn't have the time anyway. Most of my weekends are spent doing all the housework I miss out during the week. I hardly get time to go on my consoles (as my sig image below shows).

I think if their is any cristisism, it should be aimed at the food companies and the work culture we endure.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Well,I hope it's just the captian of the ship who look like that.
I don't know,I want to see a film about a cute,not a sermon to the human race.
I didn't liked The Triplets of Belleville at all, this film is just ugly.

Will be? It's already available on amazon and ToysRUs.com:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.js ... Id=3012793

Movie merchandise is finally starting to trickle into stores. I saw a Wall-E candy topper thing at Toys R Us yesterday. And both amazon and toysrus.com have a number of items already available. TRU's website has action figures from the movie, one of which is an obese human character simply named "Captain":

Incidentally, I did a workshop with cartoon voice actor Bob Bergen back in March, and he told me at the time that he had recorded some voice work for the film: incidental human characters and vocal sound effects.

WALL-E in other Pixar films?:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CUgoPgQ5K8
They forgot WALL-E in the Your Friend The Rat short from the Ratatouille DVD.
(It makes sense that WALL-E is there because, like they said,Mr. Incredible was on a magazine page in Finding Nemo and there was a Nemo toy in Monster Inc.).

Ha, that's funny! I love seeing Disney/Pixar characters in other Disney/Pixar films. Too cool.

Well, the one you see in Toy Story is rather small, and you only see it for a split second. So, the Wall-E tha you see might not actually be the final design. The one seen in Cars is a little bit more clear, so that might be a more accurate model. Plus, from the sounds of it, the concept of Wall-E has been around for a while now, but it is just recently being made.

From the first teaser trailer for WALL-E, it made it out to be some sort of epic film. :?

And now...this. Although I'll definitly go and see it, I wish PIXAR would do something..dramatic?

In the first teaser trailer it says that after during the making of Toy Story the Pixar team was already working on new ideas for possible future films. During the lunch they came up with ideas for Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc. They also came up with Wall-E. So it seems the idea has been in development for nearly 10 years now and didn't come to fruition till now.

We got a 14-inch Wall-E plush in at the Disney Store last week. But there was also an accompanying corp memo saying that all Wall-E product was street dated and that stores would be fined for displaying the product prior to street date.

What I don't get is that the movie will be released in less than a month and yet stores still can't display product? Has Disney ever waited this long to release movie-related merchandise?

The plush is $14.50, and will also be included as part of Disney Store's everyday 2 for $20 core plush promo.

14-inches...is that an obnoxious size? I want it to be the first thing people notice when they walk in my room, or stare into my car.

According to this link: http://disneyshopping.go.com/webapp/wcs ... &langId=-1

The boutique will be released on June 13th. It says toys, apparel, and home decor which are the categories they sell at the Disney Stores for every "character."

But WALL-E didn't had a final desgin back then and in Toy Story for exmaple he looks exactly like the final desgin (Even you we just see his head),but I think it's fake, look here:

I saw that WALL-E page in the Disney Shopping site yesterday,I wonder if they have WALL-E plushes over here (I have to check).
