What could have been.....

Post by REINIER »

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the initial Disney character designs would turn out to be the eventual final design, and better yet, have you ever preferred them to that later design?

Let me give some examples....

Radcliffe (pocahontas)

Image

I love it and it could work well in the movie too

Image

Altough I love Ursula's final design, I can't help but wonder what this would be like

Image

Aladdin, the streetrat....

Image

Fisheye Yzma

If you have anything to contribute please do, I'm always eager to see new material

This is going to sound blasphemous, I know, but I've always preferred "Lunar Larry" to the final design of Buzz Lightyear. I don't have a picture to share, but they used to have a Miquette in the Animation Tour at The Disney Studios. I'm thinking that there is preprouction artwork of him somewhere out there.

For some characters it would have been funny. The streetrat would have looked like a wood nymph lol. Radcliffe looks almost the same. Still has that pompus element to him.

I'd say the creative process of making these films include transforming the core ideas inherent in those initial concepts into a shape that works on film. So using the sketches in the film would basically be the same, just in a form that wouldn't work very well on film... :P Still an interesting idea, though.

Is it just me, or does Fisheye Yzma remind anyone else of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings...lol

Ursula looks a bit like the Grinch there. I think it's the eyes and facial wrinkles.

It's too bad that Disney didnt find a male lead with a beard appealling (until HoND). Cuz I rather like this design for John Smith.

We definitely need a drooling emoticon, because this website is AMAZING!!! Thanks soooo much for posting it, sotiris2006!!!!!

The picture of the Basset Hound in the "Rapunzel" concept art reminds me of my dog, Harry!!! How cute! :)

I'm not feeling the first 3 pictures of John Smith- he looks too old. The others don't look so different from his final look...would he and Thomas have had red hair, I wonder, or if John was a redhead, would Thomas not have been?

I don't really like the first 2 drawings of Frollo...I just don't like the designs much. I've seen the 6th (and maybe 5th) before...I like the blue color, but the shape of his face reminds me a lot of Jafar. I like Jafar, but it's just too similar.

For me, it's easier to say that I like or don't like certain concept art of non-human characters than it is for human characters. All of Ursula's designs are interesting...I do enjoy the 3rd picture a lot, though. The 7th picture is intriguing...the bottom right sketch in that picture reminds me of Sally from "The Nightmare Before Christmas", and both sketches on the left in that picture kind of creep me out, but I hadn't seen these pictures before, and they're just intriguing.

I don't think that purple skin is a good look on Ratcliffe. I'm glad he's plump- the 3rd picture just doesn't look right. I really like his designs, though.

I hadn't seen the concept art for "The Bear and the Bow" as enlarged before...I don't mind it nearly as much as I previously did...not at all.

I like the concept art for B&tB in this picture. I guess where the other one was so tiny and dark, I thought the character on the far right was an extremely fat woman who was presumably Merida's mother. Now that I can see it better, the only qualm I have is the drastic difference between Merida's mother and father.

Also, the one with John Smith sitting on a barrel reminds me of Michael Landon.

You are welcome blackcauldron85 :)

I think the most interesting concept art was that of Ursula. She went under some significant changes while you can detect that one of the main concerns was whether they should make her skinny or full-figured.

I much prefer the original depiction of John Smith.

He was old. He was hairy.

yay

It's a lot more realistic than the "mel gibsons" hottie we got in the end :(
