But isn't Hercules a pretty overrated film? Hades seems to be way overrated in House Of Mouse and the Hercules world appears in every Kingdom Hearts game,so maybe he"ll get a PE?.
Overrated isn't a good thing... nor does it equal a Platinum Edition.

I would like to see a 2-disk edition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame It doesn't have to be a PE, a SE will also do! If Mulan and Tarzan have had a SE, why not Hunchback?

Because Disney doesn't like to make two-disc editions anymore, save for Platinums.

and Treasures, and re-releases of HSM and National Treasure.

Anyway, my moneys on Fantasia with Fantasia 2000 being re-issued at the same time on DVD and Blu-ray.

Do you think we will start to see non-platinum animated films on Blu-ray next year?

Depening on sales I think it's rather likely that disney will speed up the process in terms of churning out not 1 but 2 se blue-ray releases each year, wether that will be non-platinum animation is anybody's guess right now! 8)

I'm hoping that in order to promote Blu-ray that Disney will release some pretty awesome special editions so people will want to upgrade. Who knows, maybe a big 2 disc release of Hunchback is coming because of Blu-ray.

Future Platinumn Schedule

Post by steven132 »

According to Jim Hill.

Well, depending on which date Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment finally settles on for the release of a Blu-ray edition of "Beauty and the Beast," it will in fact have been seven years (or just a little bit more) since this title was last let out of the Disney Vault.

According to what company insiders have been telling me, following the March 2009 release of "Pinocchio" (Which -- just like "Sleeping Beauty" when it goes on sale this Fall -- will be available for purchase in both the high-def & the standard-def format) ... Disney's pretty much burned through all of its Platinum titles.

Oh, sure. There's still "Fantasia" and its follow-up. But given the concert feature's historical significance as well as its extremely limited commercial appeal ... That's why "Fantasia" has never been lumped in with Disney's "Platinum" titles. Mind you, this film will eventually be available for purchase in the Blu-ray format. But "Fantasia" won't ever be one of WDSHE's mass market releases.

Anyway ... Getting back to "Beauty & the Beast" now ... Following the March 2009 release of "Pinocchio," Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will have officially run through its entire catalog of Platinum titles. And with the hope that -- 18 months from now -- Blu-ray will have much better market penetration ... Well, it'll then be time to start selling high-def versions of these much-sought-after titles.

As for an official release schedule ... I'm told that there's a belief in-house that it may not be wise to follow the release of the Blu-ray version of "Pinocchio" with a high-def edition of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." That -- at least from a retail point of view -- it might be smarter to separate the mass market releases of these two Walt-era classics by at least a year.

Which means that Belle & Snow White will mostly likely trading places in WDSHE's batting order. With the Blu-ray version of "Beauty and the Beast" being available for purchase in October of 2009, with the high-def edition of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" going on sale in March of 2010.

Mind you, this release schedule is extremely tentative. And given that it was only last month that Blu-ray defeated HD DVD in the format wars ... Well, that news is bound to have some sort of impact on Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment's future plans.

But if you can just hang in there another 18 months or so, Susan, you should (in theory, anyway) finally be able to pick up a brand new copy of "Beauty and the Beast." But whether that disc is in high-def or standard-def is entirely up to you.

Jim Hill can't be trusted farther than a skunk can throw him. He doesn't even know that Fantasia is indeed one of the 14 platinum titles and Pinocchio is number 13 and will be the second last. He's just making up crap. UD knows better. My theory is that Beauty and the Beast will be fall 2010 and Snow White in the spring of that year. With Fantasia in the October 2009 slot.

I think Disney will be taking advantage of the more epic animated pictures for Bluray release... At least in this first year...
Sleeping Beauty as a first release very much supports that theory... It is by far the most advanced animated film of the earlier Disney catalogue. Plus it's wide scope makes it ideal to show just what Disney can do with Bluray.

The Lion King, Aladdin, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Tarzan, Treasure Planet etc... Regardless if they were huge box office successes or not, I think the end of 2008 and a large part of 2009 will be dedicated to films that can show off what Bluray can do...

Just the fact that a film will look absolutely stunning in the format is a huge selling point and I can definitely see Disney taking advantage of that.

Disney will, after Sleeping Beauty, want to show off a little more, but I doubt they will want to release all of the previous Platinums because it will waste an opportunity to market them as such in the few years to come. I have seen ads saying The Lion King, Beauty And The Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin are all "coming soon" to Bluray... If they release them all in one year they won't be able to market them each as Platinum Editions. Guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I personally am really excited to see how The Lion King looks blu ! It's not my #1 favourite (but it is high on the list) I just imagine it will look stunning !

Agree,There's no way Snow White or Beauty and the Beast will be out before 2011.

Did anybody else take notice that the Sleeping Beauty Blu-Ray Cover Art does not include the words "Platinum Edition" anywhere? There's always a chance this could change, but to me, that is a good indicator that there will not be "Platinum Edition" Blu-Ray Discs; which is a good argument towards the Platinum Edition line not being restarted on Blu-Ray.

I think there is no question that all the PE's will eventually make it to Blu-Ray disc; they just won't be PE's when they do.

Fantasia will be released in fall 2009 and the line will be over. A new collection, with a new name, can start in 2010.

I'm glad you do Albert. Though I'm still not sure why you call me Wire Hanger. I'm not really fond of people hanging their coats on me.

NO... WIRE... HANGERS... EVER!!!

You know the line though, right, Flanger?

Honestly, I prefer the line "TINA! BRING ME THE AX!" Maybe because my friend does an amazing reading of it.

It dosn't matter if the cover don't says it's a Platinum,Disney said it's a Platinum, the Lady and the Tramp's cover and the Jungle Book cover didn't said they're Platinums and they are Platinums.

Widdi mean that the Blu-Ray cover art didn't say "Platinum". Arguably, it could, since much concept art of the DVDs didn't include that phrase, but Widdi is pointing out the possibility that no Blu-Ray will be part of the Platinum line, suggesting that Disney will create an entirely new line rather than include three or so Blu-Ray discs as part of an individual line.

I know but still, the Lady and the Tramp and Jungle Book covers didn't said Platinum either, maybe do will start a new line.
But i"m sure Aladdin and Alice In Wonderland will be in the new line since they both appeared on the Disney On Blu-Ray trailer on the Cars DVD.
