Sleeping Beauty "I wonder" & "Once upon a

Post by Marky_198 »

I found these 2 clips on youtube.
Mary Costa singing these 2 songs, but this are not the ones they used in the movie.
I think these versions are sung better than the movie version.
Here she sounds much more angelic and light.
The beginning of "Once upon a dream" in the movie always annoys me, because it sounds like she's deforming her voice and tries to sound "deep" in an unnecessary way. On these clips it's not like that at all. Like she had a much better day recording this ;)
The music is different too.

Does anyone know why and when they recorded this?

Those tracks are from the 1959 movie soundtrack album. Even though it says it's the original movie soundtrack, Mary Costa and Bill Shirley re-recorded the songs in 1958 with a much more operatic sound than how they sing it in the movie. I don't know why though. :p

The 1959 album is also a lot more abbreviated than the full soundtrack album that was released on CD a few years ago. I managed to buy a British import CD of the original 59 album, and this is the track listing:
1) Main Titles/Once Upon A Dream
2) Hail To The Princess Aurora
3) The Gifts Of Beauty And Song/Maleficent Appears/True Love Conquers All
4) Bluebird/I Wonder
5) Woodland Symphony/Once Upon A Dream
6) The Three Good Fairies/Sing A Smiling Song
7) Skumps (Drinking Song)
8) Maleficent's Evil Spell
9) Sleeping Beauty Song
10) Fairies To The Rescue/Bacchanal
11) The Prince Dreams Of Sleeping Beauty
12) Battle With The Forces Of Evil/Awakening/Finale (Once Upon A Dream)

Hope this info helps. :)

This might be a bit off topic here, but was the song One Song in Sleeping Beauty or something else? I think it's called One Song

The song went " I have one song, only but one song" I think?

I believe that's from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I think I can remember Snow White's Prince singing it to her in the beginning of the movie.

Sure. I'd be more than happy to upload it. :)

I'm not sure though what site or any program I might be able to since I haven't done it before. Any suggestions on what site might be the best?

Try rapidshare or megaupload. I've never uploaded music to them but I always download from them.

UmbrellaFish you are correct, it is from Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. Snow White sings I'm Wishing and then the Prince shows up and sings One Song.

What a wonderful find Marky_198!

It's interesting to see the different versions recorded of the song; was it ever suppoesed to be in the film? Or was it specifically recorded for the soundtrack ?

I'd love for it to be uploaded as well, if it could be !

Thanks for posting links to my video of an old 1959 LP.

As you probably know it was taken from my cassette tape, because the soundtrack was released in 1985 where Disney was promoted the reissue of that film.

This was a cassette version of the original 1959 soundtrack on the Disneyland label WDL-4018 and later released as DQ-1228 replacing 6 songs from the previous LP on the MMC label that features Darlene Gillespie singing "I Wonder" and "Once Upon a Dream". "Sing a Smiling Song" was included on a rare LP, but it was later replaced.

I got the cassette tape at a flea market last year since I was lucky to find my copy which is the original 1959 LP cover that I don't have.

Here are the pics of my cassette tape I do have of the 1959 soundtrack to "Sleeping Beauty".

MusicRadio, thank for posting all those wonderful albums! I also listened to the Mary Martin Sleeping Beauty Story album, and absolutely love it! Thank you so much for putting up so many classic old records for others to hear! :)

I managed to upload all the songs to 4share.com from the 59 album in case anyone would like to hear them. There are a few differences I noticed, like some tracks are shorter than on the soundtrack CD, and two pieces of music which aren't on the CD - Bluebird (when Aurora duets with the bluebird in the forest), and Fairies To The Rescue (the music that plays when the fairies fly back to the cottage). Enjoy! :)

Thanks so much for these links. This is the same album as mine since I do have it on my cassette tape and it is the 1959 LP.

And speaking of the soundtrack, you're mentioning Mary Martin doing a story of "Sleeping Beauty" but I do have it on my turntable. I have those videos put that up and split them into 4 parts. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for uploading this songs!

They sound so much better than the current soundtrack cd.

Listen how different the gifts of beauty are. The soprano in the gift of song actually sings a different melody.

And I love the fairies to the rescue.

The whole orchestra is so much better than on the curent cd too.

I've always wondered why the SB demos weren't on the CD soundtrack. Thanks for posting these.

By the way, does anyone have the Mulan score Mp3's that have circulated for years? These are the tracks for the complete score and not on the CD. I used to have them but lost them in a computer crash years ago before I could burn them to CD.

I found that record a little bit earlier, MusicRadio. Thank you so much for posting the links to it and to the pictures of the record! I love hearing the album, especially the deleted song Mary sings "Sing A Smiling Song." :)

I noticed the differences too, Marky. I don't know why, but besides Mary Costa and Bill Shirley re-recording the songs, it sounds like it's a different chorus and orchestra than in the film. I think they just re-recorded everything specifically for the album after they recorded the movie soundtrack. I'm not sure why they would do that though. :p

PrincePhilipFan,

I download all of the songs from 4shared to make a folder for the LP to make a ZIP file, so I can upload it to Megaupload, so that I should send to Dave at Children's Records & More site to request the entire 1959 soundtrack which is the one I have on cassette. This is in great quality, so I should check it out.

Neat! I actually bookmarked that site a while myself. :p

I'm amazed at all the different children's and Disney records they put up for listening there, especially some of the stuff I never even heard of. I hope maybe he'll put the SB LP up sometime soon too after you send it to him. :)

The 1959 WDL series Disneyland Records soundtrack LP for Sleeping Beauty used the movie soundtrack music with re-recorded vocals by Mary Costa, the Disney Studios Chorus and Bill Lee (not, as billed, Bill Shirley from the film soundtrack).

This LP was reissued as a Buena Vista title in 1970 - and was also reissued as a DQ LP in the same cover that formerly had the Darlene Gillespie/Camarata second cast MMC recordings. The latter era cassette tape (pictured in previous post) featured the art from the Mary Martin/Camarata storyteller LP, to make it all more confusing.

See the Stereo WDL soundtrack (with the Sleeping Beauty asleep cover) - or the Maleficent cover Buena Vista stereo LP for the best results. This LP was also released in Europe and Japan on CD with the same and different covers (see below).
