Gee, has it really been 60 years since Saving Private Ryan came out?

I thought some of you might be interested in this. It comes out May 25. I know there are a few Spielberg fans here...

Dreamworks Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Saving Private Ryan D-Day 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition for 25th May 2004 with a retail price of $26.99. Full details have yet to be revealed but we do know this two-disc set will present the film in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English DTS 5.1, DD5.1 and DD2.0 Surround audio options. Expect an update soon with details on the bonus features and hopefully a look at the artwork.

On the same day Dreamworks will also release two documentaries on which Steven Spielberg (director of Saving Private Ryan) acted as Executive Producer. Retailing at $19.99 each are...

Price for Peace is a 90-minute film documentary by James Moll, with executive producers Steven Spielberg and Stephen Ambrose, in association with The National D-Day Museum. This film beautifully depicts the events that transpired in the Pacific War theatre between the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 1941) and the bombing of Hiroshima (August 1945). Nathan Wang provides the background score and incorporates 12 period recordings into the soundtrack.

* 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
* English DD5.1 & 2.0 Surround
* English, French and Spanish subtitles

Shooting War - Tom Hanks narrates this 90 minute documentary on World War II Combat Photographers in Europe and the Pacific theater of war.

* 1.33:1 Full Frame
* English Dolby Surround
* English, French and Spanish subtitles

And finally The World War II Collection packs together all three of these releases for the retail price of $49.99 and throws in the added value Saving Private Ryan: The Mission and the Movie Collectible Book.

Wow

As much as I don't want to double-dip, those documentaries look fantastic. Hell, anything that Stephen Ambrose is associated with is certain to be.

The question is, do I want to buy those separate for around $40 or just spend another $10 and get the three-pack?

Luckily, I dind't purchase the original version (I was waiting for something like this).

I'll more than likely get the 3 pack, simply because I think the documentaries would be far more interesting and worthwhile as a long-term investment. I actually didn't like the film the first time I saw it ("overblown piece of crap" was the phrase I used, I believe). However, I've seen it several times since and have grown to love it....

Noooo, dangit! I just bought this movie a couple months ago.

This is going to be the first movie that I'll double-dip on. (I'm not counting Alice in Wonderland because I got the Gold Collection version for free)

We got this one a few years back when the family first got a DVD player as one of the movies for Mom and Dad to watch. I've opened the disc, but no one has watched it to date. I'll probably watch it this weekend and then get the SE for my own personal collection.

I remembered that this one (original SPR DTS) is one that I got free from a Columbia House membership, so now I couldn't care less about double-dipping

Here's some requisites MMB looks for before purchasing a DVD (this might help you to stop re-purchasing dvds in the future):

-Anamorphic Widescreen and 5.1 Audio (DD or DTS)
-2-Discs (the way to go)
-If the release is 1 Disc - Does it have wealth of bonus features?
-Is it a classic or a tittle in demand that will be release in the future? (this applies to One-Disc or stupid 2-Discs ::cough:: 1 1.2 ::cough::
-If it's 14.44-5.88 wal-mart racks and it's a popular tittle then it's not a good deal to purchase it cause this usually indicates that studios want to move out all of the over-stock they have, cause of a obvious re-release. (Don't mistake catalog tittle with popular tittle according to Studios. something like "Cool World" will never get a 2-disc set or a Special Edition unless it misteriously grows popularity and high demand. Something like Ben-Hur or Gone with the Wind will most likely to get a 2-disc or a Special Edition)
-Box sets or Limited Edition Sets (you can never go wrong with a box set cause usually Studios recycle bonus features from these on future re-releases. Unless they decide to create new ones. But since they know average Joes don't buy box sets this is rare to happen)
-Don't go with the popular trend. (just because the rest of the world has it doesn't make you cooler if you own it or not. Usually Studios re-release tittles when they see a potential market for a director's cut or some other money maker upgrade- Ex. Pearl Harbor, Panic Room, Windtalkers, Black Hawk Down, Etc)
-Potential Sequel. (Will this movie get a sequel? if so the studio might release a better version to promote the sequel. if not then there's nothing to loose since the older version will still be available and cheaper or even a sale to make it worth you waiting. Ex. X-men 1.5 and Charlie's Angels Superbit Ed.)
-Go with the expensive set. (this proves to be a one time investment in the long run ex. Alien Quadrology

this will be hard to release or top hehe.)

This are proven techniques that everyone should use when buying DVDs it's money saving and efficient! Don't go with the flow but use the MMB guidelines for happy Collectors!

Yeah really. I'm a sucker for case designs/colors (which really sucks because it means I spend/waste more money than necessary

I tried but I can't....

Luckily, I don't own a copy of SPR, as I have been waiting on something like this.

However, as a collector, double-dipping is a reality and fact of life. If not for groovy looking packaging that looks nice on the shelf, what else?

I mean, realistically, for those of you who have a collection that is numbering in double and triple figures, can you honestly say you go back and look at all the supplements more than once or twice (on most DVDs, not just your faves)? Who has time?

I buy DVDs to look good on my shelf and impress my friends and loved ones (who are easily impressed)
