I don't think John Williams will come back for either DH film. Yates almost always collaborates with Nicholas Hooper with his film scores and seeing as Hooper has been confirmed to score HBP it'll be very likely he'll be on board to score both DH films once shooting for the final films start.

It's certainly possible that due to a demanding post-production schedule, Hooper may be too tied up with scoring part 1, and that Williams might be brought on to score the final film, but I doubt that's in the cards right now.

Anything's still possible. I hope Yates acknowledges Williams's wish to come back to score DH instead of ignoring it completely.

Gah! I hated the score of OOTP but then again I did not like much of the flick after seeing the OTHER movies and reading the book. I still wish Chris Columbus was back but at least its two films.

Ugh, no, Chris Columbus can stay away from the HP franchise, please. While he was true to the books (almost to a fault), his direction and style lacked any flair or interest. It's fine when you have child actors in the first film, but after that... give me Cuaron any day. Keep Mike Newell away from the franchise.

Yeah, I had a really intense feeling of deja vu as I wrote that.

Although I'm disappointed that Cuaron isn't coming back, the choice to stick with Yates is a good one since that means the last three (or four, I suppose) films will have a consistent style. I just hope his editing isn't as choppy as it was with Order of the Phoenix.

I really don't know how I feel about the split. Like I've said before, separating that story into two halves kills the rising tension you get when you experience the story in one shot. The only logical place I can see them ending part 1 at is when Ron leaves. They have to end it in a cliffhanger otherwise if they end it after a major sequence like the destruction of the locket, the non-book readers are going to react the same way they did to the end of The Golden Compass: "That's IT?" The ending of part 1 can't be too climactic, though it can't be too low-key, either. Perhaps they could switch Ron's departure and the Godric's Hollow scenes so that Ron leaves after that. That way, there's both a mini-climax and a cliffhanger.

I at least am happy they just tacked a "Part 1" and "Part 2" instead of trying to come up with individual titles. As long as both parts are edited together as one film for BD, that's what really matters to me. I'll be annoyed having two titles on the shelf that say "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and cause this to be an eight-part series instead of seven.

Even though it's looking less and less likely that Yates will bring John Williams back, I'm really really hoping he will. John needs to finish this series off. I haven't been too fond of Patrick Doyle or Nicholas Hooper's approaches to this series (though Hooper was admittedly much better).

Well, I visit a music score forum and one of the board members knows Ford A. Thaxton, who is a soundtrack producer and has a lot of contacts in the film music world. Thaxton says that the WB wants Williams back for the final chapter(s), so that if Williams wants to come back he'll be "in".

Maybe when the producers and Yates were figuring out the intricacies of the DH two-film deal, the WB probably let David Yates direct and have final cut over both films but with the caveat to let John Williams score the films instead.

I really hope that's true, azul, because John has said in interviews that he wants to come back for Deathly Hallows, so I assumed it all rested on WB's decision. If WB wants him and it's resting on Johnny, then he's sure to come back. This film(s) needs his trademark majestic score. Hooper's music is too quiet for something as epic as this, plus I'd like Williams to bookend the series.

I don't really know what to think about the split, but if J.K. Rowling is okay with it I'm okay and adaptationwise it's the best thing that could happen.
I really liked what Yates did with OotP, so I'm gld he's directing the movies.

It's Official! Harry Potter 7 To Be Split Into 2 Movies!

Post by Siren »

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Harry Potter was the center of seven novels, but he'll star in eight films.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will be split into two movies with the first slated for November 2010.

The final book in the wildly successful series will be made into two films, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Producers are expected to announce Thursday that J.K. Rowling's last "Potter" installment, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," will be split into two parts on the big screen. The first film is slated for release in November 2010, with part two following in May 2011.

"It was born out of purely creative reasons," producer David Heyman told the Times. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book."

The two final "Potter" films will be shot concurrently, much like the blockbuster trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel "The Lord of the Rings."

Another famous Tolkien tome, "The Hobbit," is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.

Filming on the sixth "Potter" flick, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," began in September.

Okay, 2 movies - how long will each one be? Roughly - to justify 2 movies? Because people would honestly sit through a 4-hour Harry Potter movie. They are that... enthusiastic.

Well, to answer Laz's question...

... both films will most likely be 2.5 hours apiece, according to David Heyman. They certainly won't be under 2 hours each, he asserts that the idea is to get everything people want in there.

The news just gets better and better...

Please, I would sit through an 8 hour Potter movie just to see everything that was in the book projected onto the screen. I think the Potter films are good, but could be so much better if more of the book was added in.

But would the fans who have just seen the movies and lack the patience to read the books do so? Sadly, the answer is probably not.

I don't see why they care so much about not muddling with Deathly Hallows. They didn't seem to care about not screwing with the plots of the other six books, why all the sudden is it such a big deal?

That's why I don't buy this nonsense about it being an artistic decision, rather than an extra chance to grab 10 bucks out of Potter fan's wallets.

Any good screenwriter could edit DH into a 3 hourish movie.

I honestly can't see the two movies being very good. It takes a lot more time to show something on a page than it does a screen. In order to make two good 2+ hour movies out of DH you are gonna either have to drag out or add a lot of stuff.

And I expect nothing to be changed if they expect me to pay for two movies made from one book. NOTHING.

If Goblet and Order (the two longest books) could each be made into one movie, I don't see why the same can't be true for Deathly Hallows, but whatever.

Here's hoping this means a lot more Alan Rickman! (And Jason Issacs, and Tom Felton, etc.)

The main difference between books like Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows is the the first 6 Potter books are made up of a main plot with lots of B stories, which could be considered as not integral to the plot, such as in the case of Goblet of Fire, Hermione's house elf liberation front, Ludo Bagmans money troubles, the comic antics at the Dursley's house etc. There were lots of B stores that could be cut without making much of an effect on the main story. So although books like Order of the Phoenix are longer there is more "fat and gristle" shall we say, whereas Hallows is pretty much all "meat"

The Narrative of Deathly Hallows is completely different, there are no B stories really and there is far more action than the average book. Whereas the first 6 books take course over a school year and have a lot of lessons, and lunchtimes and other school type happening, there are usually a couple of big plot points here and there usually working their way to a big climax.

Deathly Hallows is just one big climax and since like I have said there isnt much in the way of B stories aside from possibly the wedding which happens near the beginning. Whereas you could cut the Quidditch from "Order of the Phoenix", everything in Hallows is vital plot. You are stuck with the fact that there are 5 horcruxes to find and destroy not to mention everything else. I mean just to calculate what is in the book, and i'll spoilerise it for those of you who havent read the books but...

we start off with Harry leaving privet drive as the spell is about to wear off, as the group sets off on broomstick there is a chase across the sky as Voldemort attacks them, mad Eye Moody is killed then Harry and Hagrid crash, then there is the will from Dumbledore explaining the gifts, the wedding, and the attack at the wedding causing Harry, Hermione and Ron to run for it, then they are chased through London by death eaters taking refuge in Grimmauld Place, then they have to break into the ministry to steal the locket from Umbridge, The visit to Godric's Hollow, being attacked by the snake and escaping Voldemort again, being captured and locked in the Malfoys' basement, breaking into Gringotts and then escaping by dragon, destroying the horcruxes, Ron getting annoyed and leaving in order to return triumphantly and save Harry, escapaing the magic flames and they try to get the diadem from the Room of requirement, then there's Luna's father and the horcruxes, and this is not even going into Dumbeldore's whole backstory and the history of Grindelwald and the wand that Harry sees in his dreams and of course there's the whole Snapes memory stuff and the flashbacks of Harrys mother and father, Harry surrendering and being "killed" by Voldemort, having his near death moment with Dumbledore before returning from the dead. And of course this isnt even mentioning the sure to be epic battle for hogwarts between the students staff, house elves, centaurs and god knows what else, oh and i forgot about dumbledores brother and the secret passage between the Hogs head and Hogwarts.

I mean that just aint gonna get into 2 and half hours no matter how hard you shove. Then only 2 bits which could possibly be got rid of or minimised at least are Aberforth and Xenophilius, but if you cut them you'd have the problem of working out how they get into the castle and how explains the Hallows, although I suppose possible they could get away with cutting Xenophilius and having Hermione stumble across the meaning of the Hallows herself.

In all honestly you're going to need at least 4 hours and even thought I would prefer one really long film, given the fact that the main audience will be kids, 4+ hours really is too much in one sitting.

True there's not much in the way of B Plots in Deathly Hallows but there are a lot of fast action suequences and interior monologue. Plus you could cut down some of the wedding, some of Harry, Hermione, and Ron in the woods, etc.

I'm wondering when the cliffhanger will be: When Harry and Hermione areat Bathilda Bagshot's maybe?
