OOP?

Post by lilymia »

Hi everyone, i'm looking for a little advice with a palava i can't seem to work out.

Basically i'm quite a big dvd collector and a large part of is just disneys, consisting of various titles from your every day stuff like monsters inc and the incredibles upto rarer stuff like a Lion king special edition, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty etc..

I've just been flicking though various websites and found that the Lion king is due to be re-released in 2009, now this kind of puts a downer on my week as i've just paid over £40 for it from ebay (as with many titles i have), and i presume if there's a re-release it'll devalue it. Doesn't OOP mean that it's deleted and so shouldn't be released again!

So my concern is that if this happens with many more of the rarer titles i stand to lose a small fortune, so are disney dvds really worth collecting?

And what's more, since the introduction of blu-ray are my dvds going to be worth in a few years what Videos are now?

I do like to collect them for the kids sake but hate to think that i'm holding onto soo many dvds which i could sell on the present market for close to £1,000 and in a few years they'll be worth next to nothing!

I know nobody can forsee the future but is there any experts here that could shed some light on the siuation for to whether disney dvds have a future and if all current 'deleted' titles will be re-released?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the barrage of questions :)

All the most popular films like The Lion King, Snow White, Aladdin etc. are on a cyclical release schedule so they'll be available for about 2 years then hidden away in the 'vault' for a few years before being released again. Just Disney's way of making good money.

So basically, yes, all OOP DVDs will be released again at some point or another so your current editions will lose some/most of their value. And paying £40 for The Lion King was a bit... erm, too much.

Who says 2009?

Yes, The Lion King will be released again. But I doubt it will happen in 2009. My guess would be more like 2011.

i sympathise with what you're saying totally, it just depends on how long you're prepared to wait.

i have all the 1st wave of collectors/special editions and some of these i paid a HUGE amount of money for, the main reason being that the amount of extras on these earlier ones will probably never be surpassed.

for example, the 2 disc sleeping beauty collectors ed. cost me £48 plus postage. its being re-released in the autumn now, but i doubt it will be as good a package, even though the one i shelled out for wasn't that great in terms of extras.

what i refused to do was buy the limited issue versions at ridiculous prices because i knew superior editions would eventually become available.

other than improved picture with blu-ray (which by the way does not interest me at all, its not as if the picture on normal dvd is like betamax!) i can't see disney having a huge amount new to offer, especially with the older titles.

it all depends on yourself as a collector, i wanted all the classics in the best versions i could get, i have no intention of selling them. other people buy them knowing they will go into the vault and rise in value to be sold on (my friend made a killing doing that)

just up to you mate
