The Sword in the Stone: 45th Anniversary Edition

Post by SwordInTheStone777 »

Does anyone agree with me that The Sword In The Stone, should have a 45th Anniversary Edition in 2008?

The answer is yes, this masterpiece desveres a Anniversary Edition, with tons of new special features, as well as a new digital transfer, so we would be able to see the movie in it's right ratio finally.

What do you guys think?

I think it's very likely, but not to the extent you think. My guess is Disney will take the current Gold Classic disc, add a new game and one real feature (like a deleted scene), matte the current transfer to 1.75:1, tweak the image a bit, create new cover and disc art, and presto: the 45th Anniversary Edition (or Higitus Figitus Edition) of The Sword in the Stone. Hate to be so pessimistic, but I'm sure that's what it'll happen. At least that film has gotten better DVD treatment than the re-releases of Robin Hood and The Fox and the Hound.

I like the name "The Higitus Figitus Edition", but I think that Disney will put together a really nice edition.

I would love to see a re-release of "The Sword in the Stone" whether it be a 45th anniversary edition or a Higatus Figatus edition. :) However, I don't think it will happen next year. It's hard to tell though with Disney, in 2006 we were spoiled with 5 Disney animated classics re-released on DVD (Lady and the Tramp, Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, The Fox and the Hound, and Robin Hood) and then this year we only got the two platinum editions, and a re-release of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh with very little updates. We already know we are getting 3 films next year, but who knows what the magic number will end up being. I don't yet own The Sword in the Stone, and I do enjoy it, so I re-release would be fine by me.

Disney is very fickle when it comes to animated classics. A few years ago it would seem almost certain. Last year it would seem laughable. This year, it seems plausible but, as DK says, unlikely to be anything very special. The upcoming 2-Disc "Believe It When You See It" Edition of The Aristocats is promising. We'll have to see how good that turns out to be and make predictions for movies like The Sword in the Stone based on that.

I just got to thinking, if we are going to get an "anniversary edition" of a Disney animated classic next year, I would personally much rather see an "Oliver and Company: 20th Anniversary Edition". And with Disney releasing BOTH The Aristocats and 101 Dalmatians on DVD next year, it would be right up that alley with the whole cats and dogs marketing concept. Just a thought. :) But, I still love and appreciate "The Sword in the Stone" and would love to see this film get a re-release.

I will get it as long as it comes on Blu-Ray discs, I can't watch a normal DVD without feeling degraded ever since I had the privlige to spend my savings on a blu-ray home theatre. :(

Ok lets stay away from being pessimistic at the moment and move on to something else like...

What you would like to see on a new Sword In The Stone DVD?

Looks like we can remove the question mark from the title of this thread, because the Front Page has confirmed that "The Sword in the Stone" will indeed be receiving a 45th Anniversary Edition this summer.

I was shocked when I just read this, I geuss asking Disney over and over again if they were going to release it, and I got my answer now, I just hope this dosen't end up like the The Fox And The Hound 25th Anniversary Edition.

Yeah, we can bet this will be a single disc DVD. The front page says it will include "all new bonus features" but I'm betting it will be pretty bare boned. I'm just excited it is getting a re-release at all, I don't own this movie yet and I will be happy to add it to my collection.

I think The Sword in the Stone may have a chance at getting two discs. If we look at all the other Walt-era animated movies (not counting the package films) we can see that they all got or are getting 2-disc sets. Excluding Dumbo which only got 1 disc because Disney said the movie was short enough they could cram enough bonuses on one disc.

of course I'm probably wrong.

Probably! I just can't see "The Sword in the Stone" getting a 2-Disc release. Though I do enjoy the film, and would love to see the best release possible, Disney knows that this is not one of their greatest films by any means, and therefore, I can't really see them giving it a double disc release.

An embossed holographic slipcover that duplicates the cover art!

...hope for anything else, and you'll likely be disappointed. MAYBE a bonus short.

I really think that Sword has a big chance at the 2-Disc treatment. Sword is loved my many fans and ranks in the top 20 of Disney movies, so I could see this happening.

Disney doesn't do two disc anymore, remember?

I'm surprised at how quickly it's coming out. I expected Oct/Nov at the earliest. Doesn't matter much, because unless it is 2-Disc I won't be buying it anytime soon. The GC disc is satisfying enough until after I get all 46 animated classics on DVD, then I'll start "upgrading".

A widescreen transfer would be reason enough for me to buy the new release. But if 101 Dalmatians turns out to be fullscreen, I'm not that confident this one won't be fullscreen as well.

I'm a little shocked this is coming out so soon too. I would have expected it to come after Sleeping Beauty closer to christmas as another blu-ray title. I'm thinking that there is going to have to be another animated classic release on blu-ray around that time to carry disney blu-ray sales in that time period. Maybe that's when Finding Nemo is coming though.

I'll be really happy with this release if it comes with everything that is on the Gold Collection plus just a game. I really don't like the GC cover art, not that I like any GC cover arts (except Pocahontas). I'll probably be picking this up, although it would be a wonderful surprise if there was a 30 min (at least) making of segment!!!

As for the 2 disc thing, I really envy all of your optomism...
