The Mickey Mouse Revue

Post by Disney Duster »

I never knew about this show before - Most of Walt Disney's classic animated characters as animatronics!

It's called The Mickey Mouse Revue, and it was thought of by Walt Disney himself. It was once in Disney World from 1971-1980. So it's old. But kina cool. It's in Tokyo Disneyland now, since 1983!

You can search it in Google, I found one great place.

But if you actually want to see it, search Youtube. The video I watched was called "Mickey Mouse Review (Tokyo Disneyland) Attraction."

Of note to me was Cinderella in front of a background that evokes the art from the film, with a mop when she never had a mop in the film, an amazing sparkling effect to transform her, and a correctly colored silver ballgown! With incorrect gloves turned to gauntlets...

So Disneykid should like this, also because of Alice and other characters from Wonderland are featured.

Also of note is characters from Song of the South! So there's yet another attraction for it besides Splash Mountain. Also, Snow White's "I'm Wishing" has NEW lyrics! They can be heard in this video of the original English version, which aired on the Disney Channel (according to the logo in the corner):

(To the same tune as the "Ah ah ah ah ah" parts, because these lyrics replace those parts)
Tell me, wishing well,
will my wish come true?
With your magic spell,
won`t you tell my loved one what to do?

They sound like they could have come from an alternate version of the song written for the film but cut for a reason, and I found more unheard lyrics on this page.

I don't like the show that much because it looks and sounds so old. I'm sorry, that's how I feel. But I appreciate and recognize the coolness.

Thanks for the mention, Disney Duster! I actually did find that video on YouTube a couple of months ago and was very impressed by it. As much as I love Mickey's Philharmagic (and trust me when I say I love it; it's my favorite Magic Kingdom attraction), I wish Disney could bring an updated version of this back. What I love most about Disney Theme Parks are the dark rides where films that I love are transformed into a full 3-D environment. Animatronics make things more special and make me feel more immersed. This is why I've been disappointed lately at how often Disney's been relying on video footage for their rides. I want more from Disney World than specially-created films. This is why I'm really looking forward to The Little Mermaid dark ride, even if I may never get to actually ride it.

Yeah, it is a neat show. I hope they don't take it out, it was a unique element to Tokyo's Fantasyland.

The Mickey Mouse Revue

Oh, you can't here Snow White's new "I'm Wishing" lyrics in the Japanese video, or at least not so you can understand them. I updated the first post accordingly with an English video that apparently aired on Disney Channel way back when it was good.

Yea, Disneykid, the fact that characters can be physically around you is cool. But I also like seeing new animation of beloved characters (and sometimes re-animation of beloved scenes!), so I think I like that Disney does video, too. The 3-D thing does make it close to having physical round characters around you, and they can actually get in your face more than animatronics can, but I do prefer dark rides (well haven't been to Phillarmagic). Maybe they could do the first dark ride to incorporate video and animatronic?

Why might not be able to ride The Little Mermaid? I believe it's coming soon to Disneyland and then Disney World only a few years afterward.

I think a mix between video and animatronic for a dark ride would be excellent. Video can be used for certain actions that would be too clunky for animatronics, and it can also be used as an animated backdrop to the robotic figures. Some attractions have toyed with this idea (Stitch's Great Escape, It's Tough to be a Bug), but not to the exent I think it can be used for.

The Cinderella figure's gown is actually pale blue like the cast member costume. It's harder to see in the Japanese video because of the distance, but the English one makes it clearer (though the faded quality does make it look silverish). I do have to give them credit for getting the Hatter's colors right, though. Too often he's shown with a turquoise hat and yellow coat when it should be a green hat and olive coat. One little surprise I got from the English video was the Dormouse popping out of the trombone. I had no idea he was even in the show, and I wonder how visible he is from the audience's viewpoint.

Oh, and yeah, I forgot the Mermaid dark ride's coming to Disney World several years after the California Adventure one. That's why I said I'd probably never be able to ride it. I've only been to WDW, and the chances of my going to California are slim to none. Thanks for the reminder!

Te Mickey Mouse Revue

Looking at the scene where the Prince stands next to her, it does seem pale blue. I wonder if her dress really is supposed to be that way in the film, and it just has a silver glow somehow. I still don't think so. I think Disney World has just made it pale blue so it can look silver sometimes and blue sometimes. It would make more sense for it to be silver and catch blue light on it.

Anyway...I can't figure out why they would do that to the Mad Hatter. It's not like silver that sometimes changes to bue. It's always green or olive, never changes, right? I did a Google image search and I haven't seen any purple hats. I don't think yellow's too different from olive, in the magicalscreencaps I've found it could pass for dark, mustardy yellow. But it would be nice if they would make things exact.

Yea, JimHill predicted 2012 0r 2015 for the ride to debut, but I don't know if that's Disneyland's or Disney World's. So that's far from now but hey, the ride will be so cool and so worth it.

I remember watching the English version of the Mickey Mouse Revue when it aired on Vault Disney on the Disney Channel back in the day. Vault Disney was re-airing the television special from WDW's opening. I was scared out of my mind because the animatronics looked so life like (mind you, I was a kid). I remember finding it odd that they rerecorded the voices of the characters. I read somewhere there was a reason why, but I don't remember.

It's funny that Snow White is singing "I'm Wishing" and she's no where near a well. I wonder why they didn't have her sing "Someday My Prince Will Come" or the song she was singing to the forest creatures.

I think they are unused lyrics from the original song. For Disney's "On the Record," they had the unused lyrics for a lot of songs in addition to "I'm Wishing." From the top of my head, I know that "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" had unused opening lyrics:

"When You Wish Upon a Star" (Used in the Wishes fireworks show)
When a star is born
They possess a gift or two
One of them is this
They have the power
To make a wish come true
When you wish upon a star...

"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"
If you're chased around by trouble
And you're followed by a jynx
I'll jynx your trouble
And trouble your Jynx
In less than 40 winks

If you're mind is in a dither
And your heart is in a haze
I'll haze your dither
And dither your haze
With this magic phrase

It's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious...

Actually, the unused Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious lyrics you posted are the unused lyrics from Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo. You can hear the full version of it performed by Perry Como and Ilene Woods on the Cinderella DVD.
