I keep hearing all this talk about blu-ray releases. Is blu-ray disc the new big thing that's gonna replace DVD's eventually? I mean DVD's ended up replacing VHS tapes altogether.

Did you really just ask that? Have you not been reading any DVD news? :P

Maybe... then maybe not. Blu-ray looks to have finally "defeated" HD DVD in the HD format war, but its still a long way off from replacing DVDs (5+ years in my opinion).

In my opinion, hi-def format war or not (and not as it appears now), Blu-ray will never ever sell in the numbers that DVD did when it peaked. Not only did DVD have more obvious advantages over VHS than Blu-ray does over DVD, in the decade or so since DVD was first released, there's even more consumer choice today about how to watch a movie. I think DVD will still be around by 2012, probably even 2018!

Still, if you value your movies, especially Disney ones and want to see them at their best, I would recommend you buy into Blu-ray as soon as it makes financial sense for you to do so. Now Blu-ray is on the cusp of making a proper push for acceptance without HD DVD getting in the way prices should continue to drop.

They "never" come back if "never" is understood as "not for the next few years". I guess that's pretty obvious unless one considers a month a really long time and a year practically a lifetime... 8) :P

As for new formats eventually replacing older ones: "Blu-ray" (or other HD format) replacing DVD is in my opinion not quite the same thing as DVD replacing VHS. Now we're basically just getting an upgraded version of DVD.

Yeah, but DVD's also have all those special features and such, of which I don't think blu-ray does.

Blu-ray has the capability for not only more special features, but much more impressive and ambitious ones too. At the moment the "virtual castle" on Sleeping Beauty is being talked-up by Disney, and its likely to be much more impressive than the Sleeping Beauty DVD picture galleries.

Of course, because you CAN do something doesn't mean all releases WILL do something... just like not all DVDs released today have special features.

Well, I'll keep a sharp ear open for any announcements on discontinuing DVD releases, and once I do, I'll consider buying a blu-ray disc player.

Cinderella

Post by MadHatter »

as of Jan. 31 2008 I have been under the impression that this film has been vaulted. I have also been under the impression that after the anounced vault date that the film to be vaulted is no longer avalible in stores, however i am still seeing Cinderella in stores when i went to buy Aristocats. Can someone calarify what it means to be a Vaulted Disny Film.

It is, but store owners keep the unsold copies on the shelves until they've all been sold. After that, they're gone.

UmbrellaFish is right, many retailers will still have copies until they sell out, but after that, they will no longer replenish their stock. So, if you still need a copy of Cinderella, I would go out and get it soon before they are all gone.

More Titles Going Into the Vault?

Post by Widdi »

I don't really follow "the Vault" all that closely, but does Disney ever vault anything silently throughout the year as opposed to just near the beginning?

I ask because I work at a store that NEVER stocks catalog titles (essentially, if it has not been released in the past year and a half, we don't have it) except when they are about to go into the vault. Last December when Cinderella 2 came in we also got a shipment of Aladdin, Aladdin 2 and 3, Cinderella 3, Alice in Wonderland and the Sword in the Stone with it. As we know all of these titles went into the vault earlier this year (some silently, others, not so much).

Well when the Aristocats came in a few weeks ago (I wasn't working that day, so I didn't notice this until I went out into the electronics department last night) we also got a shipment of the following titles: The Rescuers, The Rescuers Down Under, The Great Mouse Detective, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and Dinosaur. I find this unusual because, as I said we don't carry catalog titles and in my two years working there we have never stocked any of them before.

I asked our shipping manager about them and he said we were sent them to "clear out stock in the holding wear house". To me that sounds a lot like Disney is trying to get rid of all the old copies of the movies to possibly make way for new editions.

So does Disney have a track record of putting titles out of print at odd times throughout the year? If so we could be seeing the above titles disappearing soon, and new editions of them hopefully later this year or in 2009.

Gosh, I hope so. I, as well as many other forum members, have been waiting for a new edition of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" forever. I would also like to see "The Rescuers" get a new edition, too. I wonder if maybe Disney will see how well the "Classic Caballeros Collection" sells and from there maybe decide perhaps to release "The Rescuers" and "The Rescuers Down Under" together, perhaps like the "Classic Caballeros Collection" (I hope not!) or the "Fantasia Anthology" (Would be much better!). I wouldn't be surprised to see any of those films you mentioned get a single disc release in 2009. Though, I would really hope "Hunchback" would merit a double disc release, it seems Disney doesn't care much about 2-Disc releases, outside of the Platinum Edition line, anymore.

why would it matter to make a 2 discer anyway???
if they do they'll just put the music and more in the first disc and a "making of" fetarurette, some games, and some deleted scene on the second.

i wish Disney cared about us again, i think Mulan Special Edition, Brother Bear 2- Disc Special Edition,
and The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride Special Editon were much better releases than Peter Pan: Platinum Edition
and The Jungle Book: Platinum Edition which is totally depressing because i doubt they'll make a good DVD in the future.

All those movies deserve a 2 Disc edition (may be not huncback 2 anyway), but then agai all Disney movies do;
and i don't think it'll stop Disney from making a crappy release for any future special editions

Don't forget that the "Aladdin: Platinum Edition" is also went into the Vault on January 31st as well, so if you want that one too, I'd go out and get it soon.

Last year Robin Hood went silently in the vault. Disney really didn't give customers a heads up on Robin Hood.
Both the 2 disc Collector's Editions of The Emperor's New Groove and Tarzan went out of print without a warning either. In the year 2005 the standard release of The Emperor's New Groove went in the vault without warning but was replaced by The New Groove Edition and Tarzan was replaced with a Special Edition.

Yes, retailers apparently can keep unsold copies on the shelves until sold out.

I think they can also use up what's in their distribution center rather than send it back to be destroyed.

But yes, stocks are now dwindling and Cindy DVD's (save for her enchanted tale apperance later this year) will soon be gone.

I have suspected for a couple of weeks now that Lilo and Stitch might be silently going into the Disney vault. I noticed a couple weeks ago when I went to pick up my copy of The Aristocats that there were a LOT of copies of Lilo and Stitch, far more than they usually have on hand. I also noticed a couple of my other local retailers were heavily stocked up on this title as well. Today, when I looked at Best Buy's weekly circular, I noticed they have a few Disney titles on sale for $12.99, including Lilo and Stitch and Lilo and Stitch 2. Perhaps this is another Disney film that is silently being put into the Disney vault. A while ago, we were expecting a 2-Disc edition of this film, perhaps we will get a re-release in the near future. Now, who knows if it would still be the 2-Disc edition we were hoping for, seeming how Disney has apparently lost all interest in producing decent re-releases outside of the Platinum Edition (where the quality there is even starting to slip). But perhaps a new edition of Lilo and Stitch is right around the corner. Here's hoping!
