AFI's 2008 Countdown: Top 10 Movies in 10 Genres

Post by AwallaceUNC »

AFI has announced the subject of their newest countdown in the annual 100 Years... series. It's an unconventional countdown and will undoubtedly be perceived as a weak effort to keep the series going, but I actually think it's pretty cool. The top 10 films in 10 given genres will be counted down. One of those genres will especially please the members of this forum!

The genres are:

Animation
Courtroom Drama
Epic
Fantasy
Gangster
Mystery
Romantic Comedy
Science Fiction
Sports
Western

Fifty movies have been nominated in each category, for a total of 500. AFI voters will then cast their ballots to pick the top ten out of each set of fifty. The results will be announced in a TV special on CBS in June.

My question is -- what about overlap, such as animated fantasy films? I'll be interested in looking at the nominees list to see if anything was nominated in multiple categories.

Citizen Kane isn't nominated at all.

Overall I am pleased with the number of Disney films that made it into the top 50. I am sure they wanted to keep it from being Disney-dominated as much as they could but it's more than a little frustrating to see Southpark and schlock from Dreamworks and Fox on there while gems like The Fox and the Hound (HUGE shock!), Hercules, Treasure Planet, and James and the Giant Peach go unrecognized. It will be a grave injustice if any of the Top 10 aren't Disney films but I fear that at least one will not be.

Another post...

Disney Films Nominated in Other Genres
The Chronicle of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Fantasy)
Cool Runnings (Sports)
Mary Poppins (Fantasy)
The Mighty Ducks (Sports)
Miracle (Sports)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Fantasy)
Tron (Science Fiction)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Fantasy)

And to answer my earlier question, it appears that overlap was allowed but happened rarely. So far I have seen Splash (Touchstone) in both Fantasy and Romantic Comedy.

I will post more genres tomorrow.

Surprised Anastasia and Titian A.E. did not make the animated list nominations. I'm guessing Pinocchio and Snow White will make the top 10.

Regarding Antz and South Park: BLU being nominated, I think it's wonderful both have been (although we all know neither will get into the final 10).

But for everybody who moans about animation being percieved as for just for children and not for adults, the inclusion of both Antz and South Park: BLU are both important.

I love Antz. The ant's themselves may look a little ugly, but the actual script is a delight. Pixar's films may be commended for working on "all levels", but no Pixar film comes close to touching on the "adult" themes in Antz. Of course, Antz does tend to alienate the younger audience, but going back to my initial point, who says animation has to be for children? Especially young children?

South Park, for all its sins, is no worse when it comes to taste issues as such films as Date Movie or Scary Movie. At least South Park tends to have a underlying point to its tasteless humour. Also, South Park is a much better musical than most of the Disney animated musicals.

Can I just say "Courtroom Drama" why? It seems that this was just thrown in to make up the numbers. I mean, how many courtroom dramas can there possibly be?

Why not do a general "character drama" category, which could highlight excellent low[er] budget character dramas like Rainman, You Can Count On Me or Short Cuts? I'm sure this could include films like Twelve Angry Men or Kramer vs. Kramer (for the courtroom drama fans). Or even a great groundbreaking film like [gasp] Citizen Kane?

The fact Citizen Kane doesn't fit into any of their categories shows how ill-concieved they are.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I'm glad they took this approach. This means I'll actually get to see some of my favorite films appear in this special outside of the usual Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, and Casablanca. I'm surprised "Musical" isn't one of the genres, but then I know AFI already did a list for that, even if they never aired a TV special for it.

A nice, new idea, but the cateogries are kinda weird. Courtroom Drama? :o
I think something like Period Movies or even Musical might have been better.
And then they couldn't find a category for "Citizen Kane", which is said to be the best movie of all time? Kinda ridiculous.

But the nominees in the different categories are okay, although I think the ones in "Romantic Comedy" are overall kinda weak. How can this catgeory exist without "Four Weddings and a funeral", one of the most memorable Rom-Coms??!!

Given that there are definitely more than 10 genres, it makes sense that some well-established films are missing, as are some well-established genres (Period Drama, Film Noir - though that could be Mystery, War, Thriller, Horror, Black Comedy, Romantic Drama, Screwball Comedy, Biographical Drama, Stupid Teen Comedy, Comic Book Adaptations, Action-Adventure, Pornography, etc.). I'm surprised they didn't do the "Cross-Dressing Musical With Cult Followings" genre, or the "Best of the B-Movies". What about "Surrealistic Plotless Emotional Mood Pieces"? :P

Still, I'm glad that some of my favorite films are on the nominee list: The Ten Commandments, Laura, Bringing Up Baby, When Harry Met Sally...

We'll likely see 100 Years...100 Trailers or 100 Years...100 Sequels or even 100 Years...100 Production Assistants before we see 100 Years...100 Pornos!

Still, that would be quite an interesting list and special. A bunch of A-list celebrities, movie critics, filmmakers awkwardly trying to discuss the finer points of Debbie Does Dallas, Sex Education 45: Slutty Substitutes, or my personal favorite: Lesbian Spank Inferno

There are my picks for my top three categories. I know Sci-Fi has only seven (why no nomination for 20,000 Leagues?) and animation has an extra 3 (REALLY hard to narrow it down.)

Mr. Maltin what is your opinion on pornos?

And of course, the most obvious one after all of that, AFI's 100 Years...100 AFI's 100 Years Countdowns Countdown.

As for this idea, I think this idea is interesting, but only because it somewhat gives animation it's own countdown.

They got all the basics nominated so there's not too much point in saying which ones I think deserve it and which ones don't. I somewhat sadden though that not 1 package film was nominated, but even more sadden(and a tad shocked) not one of Disney's 21st century animated classics got nominated. Come Lilo and Stitch at least is a lot better than several of those.

As for the rest of the list... I think the idea is a fairly ridiculous one that's hard too judge.

I mean for example: is it right to put Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Groundhog Day as the same genre. Now I LOVE both films, both in my top 10 films of all time, and think both deserve recognition for a list like this, but they have NOTHING in common, just looking at their genre. One's an action adventure while the other is a romantic comedy. I don't think it's right to compare them as films in the same "genre".

And how do these guys define "epic"? Technically speaking, 75% of about the entire list can be argued being "epic".

Of course, we can argue week by week all the different problems with such a list(such as is "Animation" REALLY a genre?) as well as point out personal inclusions, but in the end, the show will be a fun way to spend the evening as always, even if the most of the winners seem obvious.

Looking at the list of Epics, it seems they're going by several definitions...

-The big-budget (big as in it costs more than like...10 regular films) all-star films with lots of expansive sets, extras aplenty, outdoor scenes, and usually is a period, war, or biblical drama with overtly melodramatic instrumental music by a 1000-piece orchestra.

-The war films.

-The longer-than-usual dramas that really doesn't fit in any of the other categories (Forrest Gump)

It'll be hard to pick the 10 best, most of the ones on the list are truly spectacular, while some are definite clunkers (the beautiful-but-boring Cleopatra, the over-ambitions Master and Commander...).

I don't think I could pick the ten best, but my ten favorites are...

454 BEN-HUR (1959)
466 GIANT
470 GONE WITH THE WIND
471 THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD
478 THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST
479 LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
491 THE ROBE
492 SAMSON AND DELILAH
498 THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956)
499 TITANIC

Yeah...I have an affinity for biblical stories (6 of th 10!).
