School House Rock Question...

Post by UncleEd »

Since this is a Disney release I'm asking here.

Around the time of School House Rock there were similar cartoons that aired on ABC that I can't remember the names of. One was about the digestive system and I think thge little yellow character in a top hat and carried a cane who sang it was in another one too. A third one was about getting a job. It was something like beware of the future blob and was sang by a black guy in an afro. I would like to know if these were made by the same people who did School House Rock and if so why weren't they on the DVD release? If not, who made them and what are all the titles in the series?

Thanks!

No clue what those are (I thought at first maybe you were just confused and thinking of "The Body Machine", but not so much now), but they must not be School House Rock cartoons. I have a guidebook, and it never mentions any of them... the only cartoon not to appear is one of the "Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips", though "The Weather Show" is edited... thus, I don't think those are legit SHR shorts.

They were public service announcements made for the network. The only place I've seen them is youtube.

Oh, and I love the 80's Strikes Back.

Yeah, why was that 4th Scooter & Mr. Chips left off the set?

I read about the cuts on The Weather Show (which isn't the original title) Is this why this one is only on disc 2 and not in the science section? How much is cut? From what I've read the song was called The Greatest Show on Earth but Ringling Brothers sued so it was recut to be The Weather Show instead. Is it just a simple redub or extra cuts as well?

So were these public service announcements annimated by the same team? Have a list of them so we could find them? If Disney owns them they should put themt on the next round of School House Rock since the format is similar and there's no other way they could do it.

I remember Schoolhouse Rock from when I was a kid in the '80's, and I have yet to get the DVD but definitely intend to. My little sister has it, but I don't recall what all is on it. Anyway, some of the stuff they used to run that I remember which probably weren't part of Schoolhouse Rock were the Time for Timer guy (I think that's what it was called) who sang about eating cheese for a snack, and maybe it was him again who showed how to make snacks like juice popsicles from ice cube trays, and the very Fonzie reminiscent guy who sang about exercising your teeth. I could probably think of more too.

I think the fourth Scooter was left off just because they either couldn't find it or the material was in bad shape. They didn't really take care of the stuff they had...

I think the only thing changed in "The Weather Show" (so I hear) is that they dubbed in thunder / lightning sound effects over the "on Earth" part from when the ringleader guy said "It's the greatest show on Earth" and changes "greatest" to "weather". It's been a while since I've seen it, so I can't say if that's fo realz or not.

Hey, I barely remember those too!

My guy who sang about the digestive system was voiced my the same guy who did Moonstone on the Pebbles & Bam Bam Show and a host of voices on Uncle Sam Magoo. I've tried looking from this route but found nothing. I'm in awe of this guy's talent on Uncle Sam Magoo. Who played at least half of the voices in that show (which is at least 30) and you can barely tell it's the same guy. He also did JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr. and they were so close to the real thing it's unreal. I wish he got the praise Mel Blanc and Paul Frees do. I'd rank Corey Burton on par with this guy. But, yeah, he voiced the digestive system guy and that may have been the popcicle guy as well. I just remember the digestive system and the job one the clearest, which is still in a haze.

There was plenty of room for the 4th Scooter because disc 1 has a lot more footage than disc 2.

time for timer

I don't remember exactly, but one was "when I'm dancing a hoedown and my feet kind of slow down, or anytime I'm week in the knees, I hanker for a hunk of cheese"

And one was "you'll have a fun time making sunshine on a stick"

the other one was "exercise your choppers really chew, chew chew, exercise your choppers on some good hard food, your molars crush, incisors bite, canines tear right through" or something like that
