The 2-disc (and Blu-Ray) art is gorgeous and classy. Kudos to New Line for that. I was really hoping that Chris Weitz's original cut would be released day and date with the theatrical, though. I'm going to be optimistic and say that the reason for the delay on that one is because New Line plans on making the sequels and wants to use the director's cut for this film to promote The Subtle Knife. Even though Golden Compass tanked domestically, it's doing amazingly well overseas, so the studio may take that into account as they consider making the other two. I suppose if that's the case, the director's cut on DVD will re-instate everything but the ending, which supposedly will be the opener for the second one.

Proof that a film can be a box office disaster and still receive great treatment on DVD.

Disney take note!

Great news. I thought it was an excellent, well-done film. I have no idea why it didn't get better reception, unless the die-hard fans of the book packed up on it just because it wasn't completely like the story it was based on.

I saw it today and liked it. It was not like "OMG fantastic" but a pretty solid entertaining flick. It was ages ago that I read the books, so I can't really say anything about the adaptation, but the major plot points, I think were in there.
My only complaints are that the characters seemed a little flat, but, if I remember correctly they also were in the first book and become a lot better in the following two novels and I didn't like Nicole Kidman's acting. I thought it was just blah, not very good. She sometimes looked as if she didn't know what she was doing. It's so weird with her, sometimes she's brilliant and then again she awful.
But I really enjoyed it and I'll get it on DVD. I just hope they won't wait too long with the sequel or Dakota Blue Richards will look like a real teenager.

I will eventually see the movie =)
I'm not going to go out and buy the dvd though. It has nothing to do with my beliefs, I just don't see it as interesting. But I could be wrong. It seems some of you liked it! I might like it too.

Someone has posted an interesting experiment on YouTube. This person took the footage revealed so far from the deleted ending (as found in the trailers, tv spots, and video game) and edited it into a leaked storyboard reel from when Anand Tucker was hired as director.

Even in this rough form, it makes me angrier than ever at how New Line dropped the ball on this. This ending would've packed a real punch and given resonance to everything that came before it, setting this film apart from other fantasies. Heck, even if New Line had left this ending alone and cut out all the rest of the footage they did (which amounted to about 45 minutes), the choppiness would've be slightly more forgiveable.

I wish WB (who now completely owns New Line) would just come right out and say whether or not they're doing The Subtle Knife. A director's cut for The Golden Compass is inevitable, but whether or not this ending makes it back in depends on the sequels.

And here's the storyboarded ending without the film footage embedded for anyone who's interested:

And the deleted footage found in the video game (except the beginning of the original ice bridge scene, for some reason):
