Question About The Aladdin Sequels Re-release!

Post by Matt »

I was at Target the other day and I saw that the Aladdin 2-pack was re-released again. I have no clue why, but my question is, the movie Aladdin And The King Of Thieves, is that in the full frame version? Not the cropped wide screen version? Does anyone know about this re-release and did anyone buy it to confirm this?

Thanks!
matt :)

I'm pretty sure these are just backstock from a few years ago. I still can't believe how they botched that release. It should have been shot in some form of widescreen given how many of the direct to videos were shot that way before there were widescreen TVs and such. I'll never understand why they cropped it. I still think it's overpriced as a set. I think Cinderella 3 is over priced too at 20.00. I'd like to see it but for less than that. I remember the days when Disney DVDs cost 15.00. It's odd to me that the price has gone up when more people are buying them than were in the early days of DVD. It's not a supply and demand issue that's why it's strange to me. Anyway...

There is no Fullscreen OAR R1 DVD for King Of Thieves.

And Disney should be ashamed for never correcting that abortion of a 2 disc release. The box says they are both fullscreen (oar) & it is an outright LIE! Any respectable dvd production company would've made corrected discs available for trade in.

I wonder why Disney never fixed this? Perhaps enough of us didn't complain? I wonder if we all started in again now if they would fix a release in the vault? I'm hoping the reissue sure to come is corrected.

No, it said that it was released Dec, 26th 2007 on the Target bulletin above where they have it. So Maybe Disney did fix it? :?

Maybe someone can let us know. I looked it up on Wikipedia and they claim all Aladdin DVD's were retired in January 2006. I know they're often wrong but this may support your statement about Target. I know I've not seen the sequels in a store since they were issued. Now they're everywhere.

So, if I was to find any Aladdin's (especially the Return of Jafar and King of Thieves set) in store, they would just be leftovers? This kind of bums me out because at this point, I've passed up buying the set on 3 different occasions. I hope the local Best Buy has one when I go tomorrow!

They should since the set doesn't go back in the vault until the end of the month, and that is when Disney stops sending the sets to the stores. And if you still aren't sure, you can always go to the Best Buy website and see if it is at the store that you are going to.

I too have skipped on this release. I mean, I have the VHS tapes of both films, but I simply haven't upgraded them. Maybe it is because of the cropping of the 3rd film, or maybe it's just because the bonus features just aren't there. Then again, maybe the films are kinda "bleh" to me even though I watch them on occasion. I don't know. I will probably just not buy them for the reason that I didn't purchase Cindy 2: They were kinda crummy sequels and I really don't want to fork over $25 for two films that I just don't think come anywhere close to the original.

Well, actually, Aladdin's sequels have been the only ones I've ever cared to watch/enjoy. Return of Jafar is my absolute favorite out of all 3 films. It's funny that you mentioned the cropping of the 3rd film, though... what do you mean by that? I was taking a look at them just now (I bought the set earlier this morning) and noticed that Return of Jafar and King of Thieves were about 80 minutes long... I thought they were much longer than that for some reason.

All of the film is there, it's just been matted from it's original aspect ratio. The correct OAR is about 1.33:1, whereas on the DVD, it is, I believe, matted to a 1.85:1 widescreen ratio. The DVD review of the Aladdin 2 & 3, found right here on UD, explains more.
