It was an original idea, copyright Chris Sanders. Not everything has to derive from something else.

yes, and doesn't the rounded style of the characters come from his own style?

I would say the story is "inspired" from stories, real-life and fictional, about taking in a wild animal and domesticating it.

It's not really that original a "story" - but it's execution and additional imagination is.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

That's interesting. :) I had no idea where the Lilo and Stitch story came from. (apart from Disney, of course)

Nothing is completely original. Be it he got inspiration from other media like books and movies or from his own personal experiences. The full story is Chris Sanders, but he had to get inspired by something.

Well Stitch as being an experimental being arrived at after 625 other developmental phases or cousins if you like is pretty original. The fact that he is a pretty calculating, cunning and vicious person and yet is quite lovable at all times is also pretty amazing. I think the movie is popular because it is very original in what it offers.

Lilo with her concept of beauty, which is oddball but genuine, relationships that have no easy fix and no easy fix is provided. David and Nani's relationship was always on a rocky road, and at the end of the movie they are not given a magical romantic end. The problems between Lilo amd Nani are addressed but as in real life there is no magical fairy godmother or even magical alien that can fix the situation.

The issues that the movie raises are never watered down to some simple solution. Nani needs a job to simply survive, she needs money to pay for bills and food. Her ability to assume the role of mother/sister is not one that she is overly good at, and yet it is understandable. Nani is a real person, she has as many flaws as she has strengths. The movie does not downplay the faults/weaknesses of all the characters, and at the end of the movies these faults/weaknesses do no not go away. What the characters learn is that these faults and weaknesses can be balanced out in living a life that is positive.

I think that Lilo and Stitch is such a great movie because it is very fresh and original.
