Yes, there were rumors for GOF back in the day to but they are back for Deathly Hallows. In more recent reports WB says no decision has been made for or against splitting of Deathly Hallows many have posted the news as fact.
Also Jo hereslef has said on her site 'It is simply impossible to incorporate every storyline into a film under four hours long'
Any thoughts?

Just bring John Williams back so we can have twice as much music from him to make up for his absence for movies 4-6!
I was against two films, but now I am for it. The only uneasy feeling is that it will be like the series is now 8 films...where 7 was already enough. Also, it won't have the special "one last movie" feeling like it did for Return of the King.

Well as I said, many places have stated it as fact today (the 14th) while The Leaky Cauldron which broke the news on the 12th said today that WB 's not having a decision for or agains.disneyboy20022 wrote:

As for director I really would love to have Chris Columbus back again.

Ugh, I don't want Columbus back. He was faithful to the books (sometimes stodgily so), but his direction lacked style. That's why I like "Prisoner of Azkaban" so much- I was upset they cut the Marauder's Map explanation, but for the first time, the style of the movie felt like what I imagined Hogwarts to be like. Plus I love Michael Gambon as Dumbledore... Richard Harris was physically what I saw him as, but Gambon really has the role down pat now.
Not sure how I feel about Spielberg... I wouldn't complain, I guess. Guillermo Del Toro would be interesting, though. Not sure if that's a good or bad interesting, but something to think about nonetheless.

Columbus needs to stay as far as possible from the HP films. I vote for creativity above faithful to the books.
As for splitting HP7, I'm all for it on these conditions:
-all the major events get airtime. I want to see Bill and Fluer's wedding, the Gringotts invasion, the Ministry invasion, Xenophilius Lovegood, and a play-by-play of the final battle.
-the films get released within months of each other (i.e. part one in July and part two in November)
-the films get released on DVD in one volume so as to avoid the problem of eight editions to display.
-John Williams scores.
-Speilberg does NOT direct. Like I said before, I want creative license to be taken. Speilberg can make a cool flick, but I just don't think HP suits him. Tim Burton would be neat to see, but I feel he could take it too far. My choice is, as of now, for David Yates to continue. OOTP was the best HP film yet and I have high hopes for HBP. Yes, certain things were left out, but I didn't feel as cheated as I did with the other films. Yates' revised storyline flowed very well. It retained good plot points and got the main point of the novel across (something that the previous films have had trouble with). Yates is good for the series. Cauron would be welcome back for me as well, but Yates has my top vote.

I'm all for DH being split into two films, as long as it is released on DVD as one movie. The more story/detail the better!
As far as directors, Speilberg would be amazing I'm sure, but since there might be two films, the scripts will be extremely detailed. This makes me really want Cuaron back! The only gripe with his film (though I didn't complain about this) was that it left out things from the book.
We can only wait for more news though...

I for one hope that the director of Prisoner of Azkaban doesn't return for the final film... ugh.
The only two that I liked were Chris Columbus and David Yates. Chris did a great job on both the first and second Harry films, and he's one of of my favorite directors.
Faithfulness to the books isn't necessarily the most important thing, though. It's how entertaining the adaptation from the book to the film is.
But dang.... I hope this movie won't be split into two parts. The others weren't.. It could still be very good without it.

Exactly. The fifth movie went by far too quickly, although some scenes were portrayed in near-perfect manner.Siren wrote:If making two films means doing it right, I am ALL for it. I'm not so sure about the idea of having #7 split in two movies.
Book 7 is not the biggest of all the books, that was OotP, and especially the middle part of Book 7 is not so plot-driven, so except for the fight and the lake scene and Godric's Hollow you could cut all that stuff.
Two movies would not give it the magical feeling that "I'm going to the 7th and last movie" has, it'd maybe just mean more profit.
They should just make it like 3hours long and it's fine. The main themes aren't for kids anymore anyway, and a PG13 rating is guarateed, and you still have to show me one 13-year old who can't sit through a 3 hour movie.
And I certainly don't want Spielberg to direct. I mean honestly his time is over, and when was his last major hit movie that was really good and not just a success because of the director's name and money?
I'd really like someone with a good artistic feeling do the 7th movie, my favorite being Alfonso Cuáron whose PoA was fantastic.
Or keep Yates, he did such a great job with #5, and depending on how #6 turns out he might even become the natural choice.

This has been a rumor for every film since the 4th. I don't buy it at all.
DH is easy to adapt into one movie because there is so much that can be cut out simply because it relates to stuff from other books that was left out of the movies. For example everything that happened at the MoM can be cut. Dung didn't make the movies so in film wold he never stole the locket and gave it to Umbridge. In the movie Hermione/Harry will ask Kreacher if he has the locket and Kreacher will simply hand it to them. There's 3-4 chapters from the book gone already.
It will probably be the longest of the films (not by much though) but there is no need for two films.

What's with all the love for OOTP? I find that Order was the least faithful, least entertaining of the whole damn series. I find that far too much way changed or cut and quite a few were done incorrectly. I also really disliked the music by Nicholas Hooper. The MOM/Voldy fight scene was very anticlimactic and that’s coming from one who saw it in IMAX 3D. I felt that the Dudley demented/Dursleys scene was done well and Umbrigde was 100% perfect but most of the film was disappointing. I was far more impressed with Stardust. I really hope dispute Yates/Hooper coming back for HBP (and Gambon's Dumbledore
) I hope they don’t mess it up!
Vent session over.
As for the topic at hand I'm 100% for the splitting of the films which I'm sure would be done in a Matrix way with same year release dates. The only down side I can think of is the title which I don't know if there should be a new title or a 'Part'/'Vol.' title and the DVD release which should be one DH whole set.

I don't like the idea of splitting up the story. Sure, it allows for more breathing room, but the sense of building momentum gets destroyed when you suddenly stop somewhere and start back up several months later. You'll also end up with an "eighth" film that's essentially one big climax, a complaint that's been thrown a lot towards The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It'd feel strange to me to have six books each made into their own individual film and then having the last book take up two separate films.
Here's how I think it should be approached:
* Harry's birthday party from the first third can be left out and combined with Bill and Fleur's wedding. Scrimgeour can give the trio the items from Dumbledore's will there, and immediately afterward, have him killed by Death Eaters crashing the wedding.
* The trio can travel straight to Grimmauld Place instead of stopping on the Muggle street and getting chased by Death Eaters.
* The stealing of the locket from the Ministry can be heavily condensed so that the trio (in disguise) heads directly towards Umbridge's interrogation instead of dawdling all over the place. This is assuming the filmmakers don't decide to just let Kreacher have the locket with him already.
* The middle portion of the novel is VERY easy to condense. It basically consists of the trio travelling throughout England, stealing from supermarkets, and discussing what they should do. This can easily be handled via a montage sequence.
* Remove the visit to Xenophilius' home. Have him locked in the Malfoy dungeon with Luna and the rest, and there he can explain about the Deathly Hallows. My only disappointment with this is that we wouldn't get to see Luna's "Friends" mural, but sacrifices must be made to serve the plot.
* Potterwatch (as much as I loved it) can be left out. We don't need to know what everyone's up to. Ron can briefly fill us in once he uses the lighter to come back.
* I'm at a loss as to how to approach Dobby's death. We haven't seen Dobby in the film canon since CoS, and therefore his appearance here will feel contrived. A lot of people have suggested placing Kreacher here instead. While they may work, I feel it doesn't pack as much of an emotional punch. If they decide to go this route, though, then I say Dobby should lead the house elves in battle at the end.
* Get rid of the stop at Shell Cottage. The dungeon scene at Malfoy manor can establish what we need to know about the sword, goblins, and Gringotts.
* Snape's memories can easily be condensed to get the point across. Simply combine the pre-Hogwarts stuff into one scene, follow it with the Marauders on the train, then the complete worst memory as was filmed for OotP, Lily and Snape parting ways, Snape coming to Dumbledore for help, and Snape revealing his patronus/Dumbledore telling him the plan to kill him. All of this can be done in about 5 minutes. Not only that, but they can be moved so that Harry sees them (via occlumency) right before Snape dies. If they have it take place in Dumbledore's pensieve like in the book, the story will grind to a halt.
All of the Harry Potter films thus far (except PoA) have run three hours in their original rough cuts. I say WB should film DH as a 3.5 hour film and edit it down to three for theatrical release. Then when we get the inevitable three-hour extended cuts for movies 1-6 (and a 2.5 hour cut for film three), we can get the 3.5 hour cut for DH to complete the set.
As for who to direct, I want Alfonso back. While OotP is my favorite film in the series, I think Alfonso has brought the most artistic flair thus far. His cinematography (with its long-lasting takes and sweeping movements) would be amazing for DH. I wouldn't mind David Yates back, but his editing annoys me, and I feel DH should be filmed and edited gracefully and epically, not choppily and frenetically. Guillermo del Toro would be an interesting choice, but he's never filmed in 2.35:1 before. Either he'll break the visual ratio of the films and film in 1.85:1 (please, NO) or he'll experiment with 2.35:1 for the first time. I don't want to risk the latter with a film this crucial. I want someone who's experienced in shooting wide angles.
Oh, and John Williams MUST come back. Can't you just imagine the escape from Gringotts and the battle at Hogwarts with his rousing score? It gives me chills just thinking about it. He's been coy about whether or not he'll be returning, so I'm taking that as a sign that he is but isn't allowed to formally say so, yet.
And if you've read this far, you deserve a never-ending supply of butterbeer.

I don't see why people are thinking Spielberg is really a contender. He's an extremely busy guy with projects in development, in production, or in the can all the time. He's got to promote Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and still has Lincoln, Interstellar, and The Adventures of Tintin (with Peter Jackson) to shoot. Not to mention his production work on stuff like Jurassic Park IV, The Pacific, and a couple television shows. There's no way he'd be able to squeeze in Harry Potter.
Personally, I'd like to see Robert Rodriguez direct the film! We'll send the entire cast to Texas, there'll be green-screen shots galore, he'll edit and score the entire thing, and it'll cost pennies to make and rake in millions!

I don't particularly like butterbeer, pour me a shot of firewhiskey instead!Kelvin wrote:And if you've read this far, you deserve a never-ending supply of butterbeer.
And I hope that WB will have the balls to include Molly's line "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!" in the final film.

So this thread got me thinking about what the DH movie will have, what will be cut/condensed/moved around and over the course of a very long and boring bus ride I roughly drafted how I think the movie will end up looking like.
It starts with Snape arriving at Malfoy Manor (MM) and telling Voldemort that Harry is being moved earlier than thought. It is extremely condensed. No Burbage, taunting the Malfoys or Yaxley protesting. Just have Voldemort take Lucius' wand and be done with it.
Cut to Uncle Vernon screaming "I've changed my mind!" and have him and Harry argue about going into hiding for a few moments. No Dudley/Harry moment or lingering Petunia. Then have a few Order members show up and whisk the Dursleys away. One of the whiskers needs to be Doge and he and Harry can have a brief chat about The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore and how Harry should not believe a word of it.
Have Harry watch the Dursleys drive away and then have him rush upstairs and grab his bag, Hedwig and broom. Show him staring into the room for a minute, maybe have a line like "take a look Hedwig, you'll never stay in this room again." When Harry goes downstairs his entourage is waiting for him; already transformed. After a quick explanation from Moody, Harry hops onto the bike and they're off.
The attack happens almost immediately. Since Dung is cut from the films, Moody will be traveling alone and his death needs to be witnessed by everybody before they split up. Hedwig's death and the destruction of the sidecar happen within two minutes of Moody dieing. A chase scene lasts for another minute or two before the bike crashes, not and the Tonks house but at the Burrow. Harry blacks out.
Harry awakens in a panic, Ginny is watching over him and tells him that Hagrid's alright, but the same can't be said for George. We cut to a scene of the survivors and Mrs Weasley crouched over the couch, and learn that George's ear has been cursed off. After George lightens the mood with his "hole-y" joke, everybody toasts Moody.
Cut to Harry tossing and turning in bed. He is seeing Voldemort torturing Olivander. He wakes up to Ginny once again sitting at the edge of his bed. She wishes him a happy birthday and they have their little make out session. Ron and Hermione interrupt and say that Harry needs to get ready for the wedding.
Just before the wedding Arthur pulls the trio aside (since Scrimgeour is cut from the movies) and gives them what Dumbledore left them in his will.
The wedding (now Lupin and Tonks' since Bill has been left out of the films) takes place and the after party gets interrupted by Kingsley's Lynx who announces that "the minister is dead, the ministry has fallen, they are coming". In all the chaos the trio flees, but go directly to Grimmauld Place.
At Grimmauld place they have the confrontation with Moody's trap and Harry finds Sirius room, then RAB's room. Kreacher tells them the story (complete with creepy flashback scenes) and gives them the locket (since Dung doesn't exist in the films, it was never stolen). The negative effects of the locket begin to show throughout the rest of their stay, they decide to leave after discovering they are being watched. No Lupin confrontation happens and they don't go to the ministry.
Once in the forest Harry sees Voldy kill Gregorovitch and sees Grindelwald for the first time. Hermione gives him a hard time about the visions and Ron grows more negative. After a montage of camping scenes with angry people Ron and Harry have their fight and Ron leaves. Hermione decides they need to go to Godric's Hollow.
In GH they visit L/J grave (no polyjuice potion though) and see the statue and house. Bathilda approaches them and the scene plays out pretty much like how it happened in the book, with Nagini coming out of Bathilda and Harry seeing the picture of Gillert. No Lily and James death scene though. Harry's wand snaps and they get away.
Back in the forest Hermione apologizes for breaking the wand and they discuss the copy of TLALOAD that she stole from Bathilda.
Cut to Harry on guard duty. He is falling asleep but the Silver Doe wakes him. He follows it to the pond and sees the sword. He dives in and nearly drowns, but Ron saves him. Ron proceeds to destroy the locket. H and H do come out of it, but the scene is shortened. When Harry brings Ron back to the tent is when the R/H kiss happens. With no SPEW in the films it can't happen the way it did in the book, so rather than an angry Hermione we get a happy one.
I'll be back tomorrow with the rest of the movie.
