Talk about Extra ideas for Disney Movie DVD(Re-)releases?

Post by gkittler »

Since its time again for some great DVD releases (for example "The Sword and the Stone") to vanish into the Disney vault :(, I know, some say it's long overdue, and being pleased by Disney with some wonderful re-releases (like "Peter Pan" as a 2-Disc Platinum Edition) but also a few for me rather disappointing re-releases (like Winnie the Pooh Friendship Edition) over the years, I thought that this would be a great moment to talk about movies that in our eyes should receive a (re-)release and what the DVD should look like, so a (re-)release would be justified.

For example:

Alice in Wonderland Masterpiece Edition, was one of the best releases I ever saw, when it comes to a film of Walt's Era. It had tons of bonus material and for me more important all the Anthology intros and and the "Preview" Episode "One Hour in Wonderland".

Or Johnny Tremain: Here we too find the Anthology Intros and the "Preview" Episode Part "The Liberty Story". Well I missed the "Ben and Me" intro of the second episode part and the ending, which would have been great, cause than we would more or less have the whole episode, since "Ben and Me" itself is available on WDT: Disney Rarities.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My first idea for a great re-release would include "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" and "Fun and Fancy Free".
So how could a re-release for those two possible look like? :?

"The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad":
There exists an Anthology Episode called "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (10.26.1955) that provides a brief animated biographical look at Washington Irving, the author and than shows the story. It would be great to include this part plus the intro and ending of the episode, without the story segment itself, since the film is part of the unedited feature anyway.
And the Anthology Episode "Wind in the Willows" (02.02.1955) in which Walt devotes this hour to the British writer of children’s tales, Kenneth Grahame. Again I would include the whole episode without "Wind of the Willows" itself. And I think it would be a justified re-release.

"Fun and Fancy Free"
The same goes for this movie: Include the Anthology Episodes "Jiminy Cricket Presents Bongo" (09.28.1955) and "Adventures of Mickey Mouse" (10.12.1955) with the new introductory material of Ludwig Von Drake and show end with the giant from "Mickey and the Beanstalk" still looking for Mickey, picking up the Studio roof and asking Walt if he’s seen the mouse. Both without the actual cartoons "Bongo" & "Mickey and the Beanstalk"
And again a justified re-release in my eyes.

I think this would be possible since the bonus material would be just about an hour in both cases.

How about the rest of you? What are your ideas?

Peter Pan

I think in another few years (in the 2010's at least), I'm positive they'll rerelease Peter Pan again and it will probably have more bonus material than in the Platinum Edition.

I would like for the upcoming Sleeping Beauty reissue to contain song demos OUTSIDE of the audio commentary. I'd also like for most of the making-of featurettes on the previous DVD to be mixed with new interview footage and made into a 45-60 minute making-of documentary worthy of a Platinum Edition DVD. (Especially one that acknowledges that the movie tanked on its original release. They really sweeten it up in the current one that's recycled from the 1997 video releases. They merely say it was a gamble, which is stupid as pretty much every movie ever made, especially ones with high budgets, are a gamble.)

I would also like the multiple language tracks and commentary (Yes, they should just recycle the old one as there's really no reason to make a new one.) to be on both the fullscreen and widescreen. Yes, fullscreen SB is evil, but those who like it shouldn't have to go without the commentary. Likewise, Spanish and French speaking people shouldn't have to endure fullscreen if they don't want to just to be able to understand what the crap they're saying.

They also need to retain the old galleries, with voice commentary on selected images. Those were amazing galleries.

I think that they need to carry over the ALL the extras from the "Gold Collection" dvds over to their respective better releases. I think Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins are two that I own the "Gold" releases and their better counterparts and notice that not all of the extras were carried over. The fact that there is this vast Disney vault w/extras out the wazoo for their movies and they can't bother to put these on their definitive dvd editions, it makes no sense. I was never into Laserdisc, but from what I've heard on this board that they can't even carry those extras over, it just makes my head hurt.
I find you pompous, judgemental, and completely self-absorbed.........would you be my friend?
