12 Angry Men: 50th Anniversary Edition - March 4, 2008

Post by Escapay »

Add another title to my list of March 4 must-haves

From DVDTimes...

MGM Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of 12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition) on 4th March 2008 priced at $19.98 SRP. Eleven jurors are convinced that the defendant is guilty of murder. The twelfth has no doubt of his innocence. How can this one man steer the others toward the same conclusion? It's a case of seemingly overwhelming evidence against a teenager accused of killing his father in Sidney Lumet’s feature film directorial debut.

Presented in widescreen with English and French Mono audio and English and Spanish subtitles, extras on the disc include two all-new featurettes; “Beyond A Reasonable Doubt: The Making of 12 Angry Men” and “Inside The Jury Room”.

I'm a bit disappointed that there's no Sidney Lumet commentary, especially since it's his first film. And as expected, the trailer has been dropped. Otherwise, it sounds like another fast re-release with standard making-of extras. Hopefully the transfer will be anamorphic and restored, I've avoided buying the current DVD (in its several cover art incarnations) because I read the transfer is sharp and clear, but still can use some work.

The poster is a different concept from what I'd expect, and I'm still mixed on whether or not it works. For now I'll say it does, though I'd rather the 50th Anniversary banner be on top.

I knew there was a reason I had neglected buying this movie.

I would have definitely bought this if it were a two disc release. But with only two new featurettes and a lacking trailer, it seems like a lackluster release. I'll probably Netflix the disc just to watch those featurettes once (like the recently released "Poltergeist"), and then be satisfied without a purchase. It's a shame, really, because the cover art is really good. I like it.

I remember reading about that (Poltergeist) and that really peeves me. Warner Bros. was like the #1 studio for making sure to include a trailer. That's one of the things I respected most about them. Now, they are rushing through "special edition" after "special edition," and I am starting to lose respect for them.

Great film, and one that my wife uses in her summer HS government class to show the jury process in action.

I actually meant where they play the snooker. No really, what does it matter? They're both/all excellent examples of witchhunts.

Seriously, I'm surprised this is MGM. I guess it's a UA film then. Shame, because Warners would have done more with it.
