You called me an ass first dude. Those in glass houses.... But lets leave the mudslinging and have a discussion.
Actually, I dont mind Madonna at all, at least her famous songs. So give me three songs you consider Rock songs and tell me what elements of R&B, country and gospel they contain. Really the song needs to contain elements of R&B or blues and country. The only thing I can think of is Like A Prayer whcih contains heavy gospel roots. But that by itself does not make it rock.
I also did say that Madonna belonged in a music hall of fame. I dont think that is debatable. I just cant see her in the rock n roll hall of fame. I have just listened to ten songs on her immaculate collection and I am not hearing any rock.
Madonna is not alone in not belonging in the rock n roll hall of fame either. They have let a raft of people in who did not play rock
Frank Zappa
Staples Singers
Moonglows
Miles Davis
Ronnettes - yes they are R&B, but Rock needs to be R&B fused with something else
Grandmaster Flash
I love the Talking Heads, but they are not Rock. Neither is Pink Floyd.
So yes, I believe the Rock N Roll hall of fame is lame because they are the Pop music hall of fame more than rock n roll hall of fame.
Peace dude
Thank you for actually discussing this. I do appreciate it.
Off the top of my head, I can name several songs Madonna has, that could be considered rock and roll. The problem is, they are rarely songs that were released as single, so, the public doesn't know them.
From her self-titled debut album,
Madonna, there's "Burning Up".
From her
Like A Prayer album, there's "Love Song", which was co-written by Madonna and Prince.
From her greatest hits package,
The Immaculate Collection, there's "Justify My Love", which was co-written by Madonna and Lenny Kravitz.
From her album,
Bedtime Stories, there is "Secret", having a very heavily influenced R&B element, mixed with a silky smooth guitar.
From her album,
Ray of Light, there is "Swim" and "Candy Perfume Girl".
From her album,
Music, there's "Amazing". There is also "Don't Tell Me", which does, in fact, contain country elements, and was co-written by Madonna, and her brother-in-law, Joe Henry (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Henry).
From her album,
American Life, there is "Hollywood" and "I'm So Stupid"
From her album,
Confessions on a Dance Floor, there is "I Love New York". Actually, the version that appears on the album is less "rock" influenced than the original version, which was released as a B-Side, and is very much rock and roll.
Those are just a few, off the top of my head, the could certainly qualify as "Rock and Roll". I am sure there are others, but, it's late, and I am tired.
Madonna is an artist who has experimented with elements from all over the musical spectrum, from country to hip-hop and r&b. She certainly does qualify for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, even if most people are only familiar with her pop/dance records.
