Mickey Smith saves the future with a big yellow truck, Rose looks into the time vortex and risk her life, and Martha Jones traveled around the world for 365 days pimpin' out the Doctor's good name in order to save him. But all Jackie Tyler needs is a pot of tea. :D

You'll like the third season. You get a companion who's in love with the Doctor but doesn't wear it on her sleeve, you get cool adventures with Shakespeare, a taste of Daleks in Manhattan (which could have been better, but I digress), and the return of Captain Jack! Not to mention the second Doctor Who episode that made me cry ("The Family of Blood") and a very unique Doctor-lite episode ("Blink").

Oh this may be of interest to "Cybapay".

http://www.cybuscorporation.com/

Interesting new page for the BBC's Cybus Corporation website. An Orbital space station? A link to Torchwood? A big Cyberman image?

Could this be the reason for Rose's return in the upcoming 4th series? More Cybermen from their dimension jumping into our own?

Anyhow the main reason for my post: DVD Overload

The Davros Collection

Until actually getting this I was in two minds about the worth of this collection, especially as the price was rather high. Considering the Key to Time boxset could retail for £70 with 6 hours of newly shot supplements (plus new commentaries) charging £20 more for largely reissued content did seem to be taking the mickey a bit.

But that all changed once I held this thing of beauty in my hands. It really is a wonderful set. It is the definitive Davros collection, and as such does exactly what it says on the case. The TV stories are great – including the previously unreleased Destiny of the Daleks and a new "Special Edition" of Remembrance of the Daleks. Rememberance not only has new supplements, including a wealth of audio options, but it does clearly look better than the early DVD release. The exclusive documentary Davros Connections is fantastic – including some flawless CGI over clips from the Big Finish audio plays. And this documentary makes it pretty clear the Big Finish audios are more or less considered canon by the BBC, such is the amount of discussion and time spent examining them on the documentary.

What's that? You don't have any of the Big Finish audios? Well, it’s a good job this set contains all of the Big Finish Davros audios then isn't it? Including an all-new and exclusive The Davros Mission. That's about 13 hours of audio! Of course the highlight of this Big Finish content is likely to be the I, Davros audios which chronicle the life of Davros from child to just before the start of the Genesis of the Daleks story. Hearing clips from I, Davros in the Davros Connections documentary has well and truly wet my appetite for more. (And another nice touch is that all of the audios are subtitled if viewed on the screen)

Finally this comes with a informative booklet. Particularly appreciated is a Davros Timeline show where each story in the collection takes place. The TV stories may be sequential, but the audios are more scattershot.

Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series

I got the Amazon.co.uk exclusive cover for this with Harold Saxon on the cover holding up a flyer. It changes from "Saxon is your man" to "I am the Master" depending on which angle you hold the case. And very snazzy it is too. Much better than the "normal" packaging in the shops.

We all know what to expect from a Doctor Who series set by now, and this release sticks to the formula. Commentaries on every episode. David Tennant's Video Diaries (which I must say, as edited so much better than last year), Trailers (making a welcome return after being left off last year's set), and whole disc of Doctor Who Confidential Cutdowns. In addition, this year we also get a Studio Tour hosted by Freema and the full one hour Doctor Who Confidential "Music and Monsters" covering both The Runaway Bride Christmas Special and the Children In Need Doctor Who Concert.

I've not gone through even one quarter of the supplements on this set yet, but I think its fair to say there's a smattering of hints about series 4 in the commentaries and on the studio tour… if you keep your eyes and ears open.

All in all, there's about 15 hours of supplements on this set (if you include the commentaries).

Torchwood: The Complete First Series

Annoyingly the Torchwood set does recycle a lot from the previous twin-disc releases – from supplements to menu designs. The good news is that it also features more – most importantly like the Doctor Who set, it has commentaries on every episode. However I was disappointed that John Barrowman only appears on two (Captain Jack Harkness and End of Days) and my favourite Naoko Mori (who plays Toshiko Sato) doesn't appear on any. Still, even when Barrowman isn't on the commentary, his presence if usually felt (Eve Myles reveals he wears "freshly ironed" Transformers pyjamas, for example, much to everyone's amusement in the commentary booth).

We also get a couple of new featurettes (Torchwood on the Road and The Captain's Log Video Diary) and a collection of Outtakes. Like the Doctor Who set, we also get a disc full of episodic "making of"s – in this case the full Torchwood Declassified series. Unlike Doctor Who Confidential these are not cut down as they only had a short running time being primarily made for internet viewing. This does however mean that the episode Welcome to Torchwood is on the set twice – once on Disc 1 and once on the Declassified disc.

Counting the commentaries, there's probably 17 hours of supplements in the set.

If we're getting more Cybermen in series 4, then I'll jump for joy and hump a banana. :D

Okay, maybe not the banana part, I don't really know what I was thinking when I typed that.

But I do like the "Cybapay".

I wonder why they never bothered bringing in the Cybermen that's already in the Doctor's universe. And would they be different from the other-dimension Cybermen?

<whole bunch of stuff about Davros>
I'm looking forward to the release as well (it streets March 4 2008 here in R1-world). Mainly for the SE of Remembrance, but also for the audio plays, since I've never listened to one before. It'd be a pain to my wallet though ($100 USD), especially since I paid SRP for Resurrection and Revelation. Plus, it's in a digipak, which would ruin the organization on my shelf! :P

Commentaries on every episode.
Yeah, but you guys get the David/John/Freema commentary for "Last of the Time Lords". Ours has the BBC podcast commentary due to rights issues. I wanted to hear them break out in song, dammit!

I so desperately need to get this series, along with the second (I'm surprised I still haven't picked it up).

Freshly ironed? :? Is this a British thing?

Torchwood comes our way in January (I forget the exact date), but I'm looking forward to it as well.

Well, Escapay. I really don't like recommending how other people spend their money - especially if the money involved is substantial. But I have to say the Davros set is superb.

I was sitting on the fence and "thinking" of not bothering with it (but deep down I knew I always would) but I must say since getting it I've done a complete 180 on it. I love it to pieces.

The big news (for me) is the Big Finish Audios. I have a few of these, but stopped long before Davros was involved (apart from me buying the Paul McGann BBC7 "season" last year).

I listened to "The Davros Mission" in bed last night (its a good 83 minutes, so almost as long as a normal classic Who 4 parter) and really enjoyed it. Like any audio only drama, it can sometimes sound a little unnatural as actions have to be explained, but it does a good job of explaining how Davros becomes the 1st Emperor Dalek. Lots of throwbacks to other stories in the Dalek canon too.

But "I, Davros" seems to be the prizewinner. That's 4 episodes each about 70mins long. Here's the Big Finish trailer for the series

I must say this, if Terry Molloy is not Davros, should Davros come back in Series 4 of New Who, it will be a grave injustice.

How odd. It appears this year there will be a "family friendly" edited version of Torchwood as well as the late night showing.

The Christmas Special: Voyage of the Damned information from the Radio Times:
Voyage of the Damned is packed with heart thumping "survivors in peril" moments as The Doctor (David Tennant) leads a motley gang, including plucky waitress Astrid (Kylie Minogue) through the wrecked Titanic after the TARDIS crash lands on the doomed vessel. But their flight is thwarted by a phalanx of homicidal angels. It's Christmas, but they're not remotely interested in peace on Earth. As you'd expect from such a master storyteller, every neccesary element is present- tension, heart-warming moments, cheeky bits, in-jokes and fun. This really is the most special christmas special!

Figured I'd let my 6800th post be on something worthwhile...

The Restoration Team has recently added their article about the Beneath the Surface boxset, and it's a four-disc set instead of five ("The Sea Devils" is a single-disc). It's a great read, and I can't wait for it to come States-side.

Unfortunately, the Davros boxset originally scheduled for March has been indefinitely delayed, as has the "Remembrance of the Daleks": Special Edition. The official statement says that it's due to clearance issues that came up after announcing its release. TVShowsonDVD speculate it's due to new material on "Remembrance", or the Beatles music in the story. Like they accidentally authored the discs with the music intact and not the "International" version made by the RT to prevent clearance issues. Hopefully it will be cleared up soon, I really really want the new "Remembrance" disc. Just love the new "Remembrance" cover...

Image

In their place on the March slot is "Planet of Evil", as "Destiny of the Daleks" is still being released on its own. April will see "The Time Warrior" and "Timelash". Yay! I'm eager to see what most consider one of the worst Who stories ever. But I'm a bit upset that it's getting the $24.99 SRP, since it's supposed to be a "standard" release like "The Sontaran Experiment". I'd rather pay $14.99 than $24.99, especially for something of "Timelash"'s reputation. Hopefully TVShowsonDVD reported it wrong and it will be $14.99.

Yes, thanks, netty!

Anyway, in recent Doctor Who viewing news, I finally watched "The Tomb of the Cybermen", even though I bought it back in July. It was a rather good story, though I wasn't too keen on Toberman being just this big hulking monosyllabic dunderhead. At least he went out with a bang.

Yes, Toberman was most likely a victim of swinging 60's racism. Its a shame they don't have Maltin to do "from the Vault" introductions! :D

Here's the Time Meddler cover:

Looking forward to the "Stripped for Action" supplement. I wasn't expecting anything like that on a "standard edition" (I just ordered mine yesterday night for less than £8, along with the Five Doctors 25th Anniversary Special Edition, The first of the Sarah Jane Adventures series releases and Voyage of the Damned).

I hope each Doctor gets their own "Stripped for Action" featurette - It would make sense to put one on The Dominators for the second Doctor as the Quarks featured in a few comic strips. It would be great if The Chase could include a Dalek "Stripped for Action!" featurette!

I am really looking forward to another 1st Doctor DVD. I predict The Sensorites will be out by the end of 2008 too, being as it will be revealed the Ood are semi-related in "Planet of the Ood".

I really feel for you Escapay. I listened to the Destiny of the Daleks commentary track last night which was great. I think I'm in love with Lalla Ward all over again  (Even though I have the other Romana as my Avatar at the moment). It's a same there's no Davros boxset for the US in the forseeable future (and I guess the tease that it will be coming out later will stop you picking up Destiny).

I know its a fair few weeks away, but you absolutely must report back your opinon of Timelash here as soon as you view it Escapay! I can guarentee even if you don't like the episodes, being as you have some distain for "everything was great" commentaries and "makings of", you'll love the DVD which is anything but "everything was great"! :D

Yeah, I really want to get the boxset since that's the only way to get the audio dramas for me (or ordering online, which I don't do often and don't really enjoy either). But maybe I'll pick up Destiny on its own anyway just to hold me over, since the main reason I want the Davros set is for the new Remembrance.

Oh, I'm looking forward to "Timelash"! It's reputation precedes it and it's stories like those that help solidify my casual-but-really-dedicated fandom. I'll force myself to enjoy it if it kills me, lol.

Well, I'm sorry to say that the Voyage of the Damned was somewhat lackluster for me. I'm sure the BBC will be crowing about it for weeks, being as it got staggering viewing figures (13.5m+, and that's not including timeshifted viewers. It actually got an amazing 50% of the television audience watching it! Half of all TV sets that were on were tuned to Doctor Who).

But it was a far from amazing episode. I think the problem was the show was given too much money. I felt the show tried too hard to compete with big budget movies, and as a result forget what makes Doctor Who so unique and special. There were some hints of the programme's uniqueness though - London being deserted as the population feared another Christmas day invasion and Mr Cropper and his misunderstandings of Earth Christmas - but for me, not enough.

Compare Voyage of the Damned with The Christmas Invasion and see which one has more wit, character, emotion and (most importantly) fun. The Christmas Invasion may not of had the budget, but it simply pushed the non-expensive aspects more.

The most damning thing I can say about the damned was that I was actually bored with the programme and wondering how much longer there was to go at several points. And ironically this was the Xmas Special with an extra 10 mins or so.

I can only give this a slightly above average 6/10.

Still all complaints aside, it was no Timelash! :D

Oh my. Things are hotting up for the 2008 "climax" according to recent rumours - and no Davros in sight after all (according to recent rumours).

The Sun has recently published a story about the Doctor "lite" episode for 2008 - although it has a couple of factual errors, it seems to confirm what's been rumoured in fan circles for a few weeks.
BBC bosses are so confident in Doctor Who that they are making an episode without him in it.

Instead, the Time Lord’s three female assistants – Rose, Martha and Donna – take the starring roles.

The shock twist comes after the Doctor, played by David Tennant, gets lost in space.

His faithful sidekicks – played by Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate – are left to take control of the Tardis as they battle to save the world from an alien invasion.

An insider on the show’s top-secret Cardiff set said: “The chemistry between the three assistants is electric. It is so strong that we realised the doctor could be in danger of getting in the way.

“So it is left to the girls to sort things out, having to save civilisation and the Doctor himself.”

Former assistants Billie, 25, and Freema, 28, will team up with the Doctor’s new companion Catherine, 39, for the one-off episode towards the end of the next series. It will be screened in March.

The insider added: “It is a bit of a gamble having Doctor Who without the Doctor – it has never been done before. But everyone is so interested in the different assistants that it should be fantastic.

“Donna, Martha and Rose are all competing for his attention in different ways and all want to be the best.

“But the question will be, can they work together?”

The Beeb are hoping for huge viewing figures for series four after the Christmas Special featuring Kylie Minogue pulled in 12.2million viewers.

But Tennant’s future remains uncertain. He is expected to quit after filming this series and three more specials. He recently said bosses had yet to offer him a new contract.
This combined with other whispers that the Trickster's appearence in the "What ever happened to Sarah Jane?" episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures is likely to be followed up in the future (either in SJA or Who) leads many to think that the Trickster is going to erase The Doctor from the timeline in order to promote universal chaos. Remember this exchange between the Trickster and Sarah Jane in "limbo"?

The Trickster: I will return when the Earth is no more, and I will explore your potential further; in particular, your memories of this 'Doctor'.
Sarah Jane: You leave him alone!
The Trickster: I can use you to find him. Imagine if The Doctor had never existed? What chaos there would be, across the stars.
Sarah Jane: (hysterically) Don't you dare! Don't you dare! Don't you dare!

This qualifies for the 2007 thread... just. I guess I'll be starting a 2008 thread when Torchwood starts on Wednesday! :D

Obviously, this refers to the UK showing.

It's official, the Christmas special Voyage of the Damned is now the holder of the highest chart placing in the Doctor Who's 44 year history.

The Broadcasters' Audience Research Board has now published final viewing figures for the week ending 30th December 2007 giving the Christmas Special, Voyage of the Damned, an official rating of 13.31 million viewers. Final figures are more accurate than the initial overnights and take account of those recording the programme and watching it within a week.

This confirms the programme not only as the second most watched on British television for the week, but the second most watched programme on British television for the whole of 2007. It outrated such high-ranking shows as The Vicar of Dibley, Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor and its old adversary Coronation Street. The only programme to score higher ratings than Doctor Who last year was the second Christmas Day edition of EastEnders.

In terms of raw ratings Voyage of the Damned is the 8th most watched episode in the programme's history, being beaten by one William Hartnell episode and six Tom Baker ones. An amazing feat when you consider that most of the top rated Tom Baker episodes were transmitted when ITV1 was on strike and the only other channel broadcasting at the time was BBC2.
