TheWB wrote:For the last seven years Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been cornerstones of our network. The sum total of the work done on those shows has produced some of the proudest moments in our history. Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB.
It's over guys. Some of the best TV ever made (Angel was far better than Buffy).

Absolutely - I found Angel to be consistently better than Buffy.

It is a shame, although the premise for the new season sounds stupid: Spike haunting Angel?? Pissweak.

Anyhoo, will be sadly missed.

Angel is one of the only tv series that I still watched... very sad new indeed! I liked it equally with Buffy, except for Buffy's last season which seemed like a lot of filler until the end.

I can't believe this... I LOVE Angel! It is such a great series, I really hope it is picked up by another network, because it seserves to run as long as Buffy did. It deserves 2 more seasons!

This is sad. :(

I thought Buffy had been on a downward slide ever since they left high-school (or should I say, the high-school left them). Season 4 was Ok, but really, despite Joss's efforts to make them more "adult" and have "adult emotions", they all really came across as spoiled brats who whined constantly.

Dawn's most often used line (usually after Buffy had just saved the world, but forgot to tell Dawn that she left the towels on the line): "Why didn't you tell me??? You are so selfish, I hate you forever......." etc. And the other characters didn't seem much better. To used a 2099net expression, they seemed like "pod" versions of themselves. As an example...

*MAJOR SEASON 7 - SPOLIERS - HIGHLIGHT TO READ*
...look at the reaction of Xander in particular to Anya's death. Does it seem like the one of somebody who loved her dearly? Spike sacrificed himself, and the general reaction was "Eh - I guess the mall won't be open".

To me, this makes the chracters fail to live up to either:
a) their season 1-3 personas
b) the supposedly matured 4-7 versions of themselves.
Rather, they are a strange hybrid - or "pod version" - of the characters we know and love. I don't know - maybe it is just me, but I really did stop "caring" about the characters or the series towards the end.

Plus, I couldn't stand Dawn or Tara :P

Rumor has it that UPN might pick up Angel just like they did to Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Roswell when The WB cancel them both.
The UPN president was not avaible for comment.

There is still much you can do......... Go to saveangel.org and sign petitions, write letters, etc... the fans have to do something we can't just stand by and watch them cancel Angel to make way for Dark Shadows which will get cancelled in the first week. Down with the Frog!!!!

This is crazy, I am very sad now! It cannot be the end of the series! It will be picked up by another network! It just has to. And why is the WB putting a stop to it anyway it is one of their only rated shows. I know they were not the highest ratings but cmon. What else does the WB have to offer? Smallville has been lack luster since the 2nd season.

Blimey! I dread to think what you think of Connor in Angel then. "I'm Connor. Wahhhh Wahhhh Wahhhh". Good impression, eh?

It's uncanny! I think one more "Wahhhhh" and it would have been spot on!

Both series seemed to introduce whiny characters that everybody hated around the same time...I think Joss was just testing our patience for that year.

Oh, and speaking of Joss, this is even off topic the off topic section, but he is going to start writing a new X-Men series starting in May:
ASTONISHING X-MEN #1
Written by Joss Whedon
Pencils & Cover by John Cassaday

"Gifted" Part 1 (of 6)
Dream-team creators Joss Whedon (creator of TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and John Cassaday (Planetary, CAPTAIN AMERICA) bring you the explosive #1 issue of the all-new flagship X-Men series! As part of X-Men: Reload, this issue marks a return to classic greatness and the beginning of a brand-new era for the X-Men.

May 26 :: 32 pages :: Marvel PSR :: $2.99
I don't know if he will just kick the series off, and then let someone else take over the reigns (a la Kevin Smith with Daredevil and Green Arrow), or if it will be ongoing. I haven't read his "Fray" (the Slayer of the future comic) , so I don't know what his comic writing skills are like, but it could be really good.

He wrote an Angel story arc I read. It was strange, as it was more like a comic book than the Angel TV series, but I suppose that was his intent. But I didn't really think it worked.

What's this about a return to greatness? What was the last X-Men relaunch then? A slide to mediocrity? Er. On second thoughts don't answer that. *coughs*Casy*coughs*

Conor was one of my favorite characters. I was really sad to see him go and I'm really looking forward to his eventual return, if/when that happens.

Something to be taken into consideration with Conor is that, and I haven't finished seeing Season 3 yet, but from what I understand, Conor was taken to a hell dimension as an infant and like tortured his whole life before returning back to earth as a teen, and that whole time he was made to hate Angel. Conor was constanly going through inner torment, that wasn't eased by Angel or any of the other gang. I think this was apparent throught out the whole time I saw him, through most of season 4, and I believe that is why the eventual wrap up of that story had to take place. (His memory being erased and being put in that family).

Dawn on the other hand, was really just annoying, and really just didn't belong there....

But that's just my opinion on the matter.

Well, I hate to say this after watching season 4 on DVD, but I can see why Angel may have been in touble.

Connor was annoying. Never before have I wanted a character to get an ass-whipping as much as I wanted Connor to get one. (And yes, I include Alice from Alice in Wonderland in that. I just wanted her to get a slap or two). And while the story was good - very good up until the birth of Jasmin, it really did require an audience to watch every single episode to know what was happening. Not exactly a good way to keep audience figures.

Oh well, Angel S5 promises more stand alone episodes. How is Angel S5 Prince Phillip?

I'm not PP, but Australia is 4 or 5 episodes into season 5 at the moment. It kicks off with Angel runnning Wolfram & Hart and a surprise visitor from another series (but I think we all know who that it).

It DOES seem to be a bit more "monster of the week" this season (i.e. stand-alone episodes), so it is easier to pick up if you have missed one (I missed the first episode due to bad promotion on the part of the networks. The rest of the city missed it because the reception went down due to a storm and they failed to start the episode from where it cut out).

I don't know - it could be the new setting, but the characters just don't seem "themselves" to me.

Just my opinion, but Dawn and Conner were the two worst charcaters in those series. Just plain annoying and whiney, their onscreen deaths would have been cheered by legions of fans.

Now the latest development with Fred is very interesting... an ending to this show would be a very good thing, I hope they make one if UPN doesn't pick the show up.

Great news for Firefly fans... just read at AICN that the big screen movie, Serenity, has been given the green light!

As I mentioned above, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I think most of my Buffy-friends would have actually had a party if Dawn had been killed in a horrible, graphically onscreen way.

End of Angel

The low point to me was the appearance of the puppets. I'm a big fan of the show but geesh!

The WB might still keep Angel for a sixth season.
Due to the ratings The WB is keeping it as a asset.
I hope this is true.
