The news is full of violence and yet they still show it 7AM and 5PM when kids are home from school and can see it. Be it a man being thrown from his car as seen through the lens of a news cam on a helicopter or a plane flying straight into a building.

I don't feel the TV should take any responsibility in what they show "in case children see it". I certainly don't believe porn should be shown on cable tv, but curse words or vulgar humor and such is accepted as far as I am concerned. And this idea that prime time TV is all that different then it was before doesn't hold a lot of water either. Even shows like Golden Girls deals with gays, sex, and if I remember correctly, an episode that involved a gun. That was on at the same time many of these other shows are.

And as a parent, I know my kid isn't stupid. Just because Family Guy is a cartoon doesn't mean she would automatically watch it. She's only seen the commercials and doesn't bother with it, ever. Same with Simpsons.

I think America has its head up its ass, IMO. They blame the media for bad parenting and that is idiocy. I grew up watching all kinds of stuff. Movies that were rated PG-13 and R. Horror movies with violence. And yes, my parents let me. And yet, I don't own a gun, I am not a violent person, I can't stand the sight of someone else's blood (I can deal with my own, oddly enough), etc. IMO, it proves you can watch "bad things" and be raised by good parents and still turn out just fine. Chastising the media for all the kids' problems is a scapegoat. Its denial.

I guess this could be an idea for a new program concept: To actually beat a dead horse.

My television has an off switch AND a channel selector. So does my remote. Have you heard of planning your television watching so the kids don't see this stuff. Either that or just turn the boob tube off, and play some games. Kids like to have some attention paid to them once in a while. Try it, you might like it, and your kids will love you for it.

We have a big game night once a month with a friend of mine and her family. About 15+ of us get together with the kids and play board games. Some games the kids play together and we have our own games. Others the kids and adults together. Its a total blast :D We keep adding more families though recently, so we have to rotate games. And we keep having to buy multiple board games to keep up with the success of game night. Then when it gets late and the kids wind down, they all watch a movie together while the parents play other board games or poker. :P
