Why all the hate for Pixars CARS?

Post by CampbellzSoup »

I never really got around to seeing CARS in the movies, however I finally got it on Disney's High Def Blu Ray disc, and let me tell you the movie was simply fantastic.

I went into the movie with the lowest expectations ever, because of the massive amounts of hate I read for it on the internet. So many reports of it not being up to Pixars standards, and how the film was so cliche.

While I do agree it's not up to par with Ratatouille which I also got on Blu Ray, the film has some great moments, and some truly stand out characters.

The film did a big 360 on me when you learn the history of the small town - and the character progression of McQueen from a real jerk (I wondered why they gave him this persona in the begining!) to a real cool guy.

I just wanted to know if the film was hated here on Ultimate Disney, I remember the backlash from the film which turned me off until I had to get the Amazon deal when I read the picture quality review.

Great film - the ending was truly touching.

It seems quite all right in my opinion - however, I don't really know about the ending yet. My three-year-old nephew would frequently start watching it, but eventually grow tired somewhere between the middle and the end... So that's how far I got as well.

I didn't like it because it was too formulaic. That and I didn't like any of the characters and I can't stand Owen Wilson's voice.

Maybe had I gone in with lower expectations I would have liked it more. Some of my reasons are...

1) Part of it for me was the story was formulaic and trite, and having the characters be cars did nothing to the story. In other words, the stories in "Monsters, Inc.", "The Incredibles", and "Toy Story" would have lost something unique the main charatcers were people instead of monsters, superheroes, toys, etc. "Cars" never had that something unique tp begin with.

2) I just loathe Larry the Cable Guy. When I heard he was in the movie, my desire to see it plummeted.

3) As it was, the script just wasn't that interesting. I wasn't emotionally connected to any of the characters (save for maybe Doc Hudson), and the writing itself was just not funny. The only time I actually laughed was during the John Ratzenberger joke in the end credits. If the only time I laugh is after the movie has ended, there's something amiss.

Thanks for the great reply!

Looking back a bit now I actually AGREE with you on all three points, although I found Mater to be carming ;p.

I think what hurt the most was the horrible set up...I dunno I just didn't connect with any characters until MID WAY through the story...I just didnt' feel like half of the movie had that Pixar finish to it.

Still a great movie by Disney standards, and should be recognized, I just remember reading horrible things about it - that's why I questioned.

I don't hate Cars, I mean it was a good movie and the animation was superb. I just feel this was Pixar's weakest movie. Some people say Bug's Life was, but I like that movie just because I grew up with and remember seeing it in theatres with my best friend. I love this movie still.

I don't HATE Cars, I just think it's less cleverly thought out than other Pixar movies. Movies like Monsters's Inc , The Incredibles and Ratatouille managed to make the fantastic and incredible believable. Watching these films I just could believe in a monster city depending on childrens' screams for their energy supply, a human world inhabited by superheroes, or a rat with culinary ambitions.
But with Cars so many questions are lef unanswered. So this world is only inhabited by cars, so what is in their inside if there is no driver? Why do they need buildings and who would be able to build them anyway? Where do they get their gasoline and who supplies this?
Just a few things that puzzle me.

I love "Cars"!!! It's my favorite Pixar movie (I love them all, but this movie has something special. But I need to rewatch "Ratatouille" to see if it's tied with "Cars".).

As I've mentioned in other threads, characters are my favorite thing about Disney (and Pixar) movies. I agree, CampbellzSoup- Mater is charming! He's so sweet!

It's just a movie about a city-boy coming to a small town. It's a pretty simple premise. I really like the designs of the characters (and I'm so not a car person!). The voices don't bother me at all...I'm not familiar enough with the actors playing the parts. I mean, I know who they are, but I've never really seen things with them in them.

I like the music in the movie- I don't know how anyone can have a dry eye during "My Town". The movie is action-packed in the race scenes, and often pretty low-key during the Radiator Springs moments.

I don't understand why a lot of people don't like it either (but I'll learn from this thread, I guess)!

I'm surprised, I didn't know there was hate for this movie. They're even making a sequel and a whole Cars Land! Proves that Someone had to like it.

I love Cars, it's (as of right now anyway) my third-favorite Pixar movie.

The order for me goes like this:

1. Toy Story
2. Toy Story 2
3. Cars
4. Monster's, Inc.
5. The Incredibles
6. A Bug's Life
7. Finding Nemo
8. Ratatoullie

Not to mention Cars has some of the coolest die-cast cars EVAR! :D
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

u know, I never got around to seeing cars LOL. I saw Meet the Robinsons when I bought it on DVD and let me tell you Disney did a fantastic job on that movie! I know it's not Pixar but it comes really close to it. :)

I need to watch Cars first than I will watch my Ratatoullie DVD. :D

Well, it seems everyone in here is saying that they love Cars and they don't know who all the Cars haters are! Well, let me step forward and say: I AM!! This is by far Pixar's weakest effort. I have ranted and raved my dislike for this film in many of the other Cars related threads and honestly I just don't feel like typing all that again. I'll see if I can find my previous posts on the subject, and paste them in here.

Maybe I can judge. And note if they hate Cars, they might have seen "Happily N'ever After," because it's N'ever a good CGI movie. Just a plain ripoff of Hoodwink, Disney Classic Animated Fairy Tales & Shrek. Happily N'ever should be having its own idependent plot, not ripoffs. Ripoff movies should be banned. C'mon, it's wrong to ripoff a good movie. So like I said, maybe I'll judge.

CARS are great!

Post by vojna »

CARS is the first pixar movie I decided to purchase and I dont regret a dime!!! I guess you must in some kind of way see that every car in reality has its personality. And thats what Pixars tried to show! I just remeber how hard it was for me to say goodbye to my VW Golf - it was my first car I had a lot fun with, it just help me to travel all around Europe and it never failed. So if you got the same feeling to your car you must love this movie!

The story itself is pretty simple... I would not question anybody for why there are no people inside or whatever... If you take it that seriously you can even ask why is it so that all the animals are talking, or furniter is dancing...

Its just magic! :D

I like Cars but it has 2 weak points-
1.The whole idea of talking cars reminds me of shows like Bob The Builder and other of those show for small children, and it's just... they have eyes, mouth, etc.,it's just werid.
2.The message-People do drive in that road and in the movie they showed it like it's deserted, also did Lightning actually learned something of all this? is it have a masseage? he still care only about races,so what's the change in him?.
Anyway my favorite Pixars are Finding Nemo and Ratatouille.

Like the majority of members in this thread,I love Cars!
It's one of my favorite PIXAR movies and the fact that Larry the Cable Guy is in it doesn't really affect me. I think my favorite charectors were Lightning and the car that Bonnie Hunt played.

Agreed, and the whole "Cinderella's-stepmother-change-Cinderella's-happoly-ever-after" is a Cinderella III rip off.
