"Safe Buys" For Animated DVDs

So I've made a list of the animated Disney DVDs that I don't currently own, but want. The thing is, I don't want to buy something now that Disney will soon turn around and rerelease.

So I thought we could play a little game of speculation. Out of these, which ones do you think are safe from being re-released any time in the near future?

I would say the following have a chance of disc "upgrades" in the near future.

Hunchback - it has enough content on the LD for a 2 disc release (which was advertised on the Disney website for a nano-second when the single disc was released)

Treasure Planet - indications are that a 2 disc set may be coming out. Personally I think it will be hard for Disney to create enough content for a worthwhile upgrade, being as the single disc is one of the better single disc releases.

Hercules - for no other reason than I want a 2 disc set. Come on Disney, how about it? It would be great just seeing all of Scarfe's designs in a virtual gallery.

I would agree with 2099 net. I dont see any others being released within the next two years. And by then you are getting too close to the release of HDVD in 2007.

Exactly. Many of those all already have 2-disc SEs (Monsters, Inc.; New Groove; Atlantis; etc.) and those won't be upgraded. The '70s and '80s films will be the last to recieve special treatment, I think. And I highly doubt Treasure Planet will be re-released, personally, especially with Disney considering it a flop. I'd love a 2-disc set but I just can't see it happening until it comes up for release in HD-DVD.

A Goofy Movie is for some reason 1.33:1 pan & scan only here. Avoid it.

The others that I haven't mentioned are more than likely to get SEs at some point.

Thanks. My biggest concern would be James & The Giant Peach. I don't know how well it did, but for some reason it just strikes me as the kind of movie that would come with a 2-disc set.

Aaron you forgot Mulan it may be going Masterpiece Edition follow by The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules.
They might get the Masterpiece Edition upgrades.

Disney announced specs for both a single-disc standard release and double-disc Deluxe Edition versions, and then within hours removed the information for the DE and obviously the DE has yet to come to us. It's widely believed that they were purposely holding back the Deluxe Edition in order to force die-hard fans to double dip later.

In terms of aninated classics, the only features I can positively see going 2-Disc are Dumbo, Hunchback, Hercules, Mulan, and Treasure Planet. Everything else is sort of up in the air at this point, so I say go with them as if they do go 2-Disc, it won't be for a very long time.

WOAW Gerald Scarfe designes stuff for Hercules? Do they mention this on the short featurette on the dvd? I must have missed it! I like the way he paints, his animations are the only thing good in "The wall-movie" (I like the music too but the album is better than the film imo)

Well, Hercules has to be reissued at one point or another because it needs an anamorphic transfer, so it will probably go double-disc whenever that happens. I'm sure there's enough content there for them to do it, or if there isn't they can probably create new stuff. I'd imagine that Ron Clements and John Musker would be more than willing to do a commentary track, at least.

And think about it -- if all the other '90s musicals before it go 2-disc (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Lion King are all Platinum; we know Pocahontas will go Masterpiece Edition next year; Hunchback is a lock eventually, probably 2006; and Mulan is strongly rumored) wouldn't it be strange for them to exclude Hercules?

I already knew that about Mulan, that's why I left it off. I think I read it here, but not positive (after all, this is where I stay the most Disney DVD-informed lol).

Scarfe's work on the film IS mentioned on the short making of on the DVD. I have "The Art of Hercules" book, and his conceptual drawings are really amazing. It does deserve to be grouped in nice galleries on a special DVD.
I also beleive they will release an all-new edition of "Hercules" in the future, but keep in mind that the film is treated as the biggest let-down of Disney animation in the 90s, so a 2-disc set is not THAT likely.

My reasoning is exactly like Jake's; virtually every animated feature from the 90's will either go platinum or masterpiece, so it would seem odd for Disney to leave this sole one out. Also (and this isn't very reliable), for some reason I can just easily see Hercules go 2-Disc. As a matter of fact, I can see that going 2-Disc before Treasure Planet. It's just one of those things, I guess. Besides, it's a recent enough film that Disney can easily put together EPK material along with some new stuff.

As with "Lilo & Stitch", Disney produced enough material for "Treasure Planet" to fill two discs. But when the film flopped, it was decided to go with the one-disc only release.
