Hey Canadians, are you boycotting DVDs? (RE: prices)

Post by Barbossa »

I decided not to buy any dvds for a while until I see the price drop on them here in Canada (even though I do want to get Ratatouille next week). Apparently Walmart has been dropping prices on all sorts of stuff in their stores but I have yet to see prices of DVDs go down in Walmart or other stores such as Future Shop.

For instance, over on mania.com they have an article covering the complete X-Files set coming out next week. Here's the page:
http://www.mania.com/56529.html

But check out the price: $329.98 U.S. / $419.98 Canada
Booooooo   :x :x :x
Our Canuck buck is higher now than the greenback so why are they charging us $90 more?? :x :x

Time to jump in the car with passort in hand to cross the border and head to the nearest Target, or American Best Buy.

I'm avoiding buying anything but the necessities... I've had enough of this BS from our retailers up here. The old excuse of their stock being purchased before the dollar was worth this much is absolute crap... even a year ago today, the canadian dollar was still worth quite a bit more than the exchange rate they seem to be using for merchandise.

Even now, when our dollar is worth more than the USD, it takes monumental levels of customers complaining and incessant news reports on the subject to make the largest of retailers cut back prices on meaningless items like books, wrapping paper, greeting cards, etc.

Much more of this, and I'll quit buying everything other than groceries up here and cross the border every week or two and buy the other things I want. Hell, I may even start buying certain types of groceries down there, and just get the frozen stuff up here, lol. I'll do my part to put these crooks out of business, that's for sure.

I'm just flipping through the Calgary Sun and found a flyer for Visions. In it they have Ratatouille advertised for $19.88 and that is is below cost. Below cost my butt.

I am so glad that some other members here at UD share my frustration in this. Our dollar is the highest it's been in over 50 years, it's actually worth more than the US dollar and we are still being gouged for prices of DVDs. And it's not like it's only $1 difference or something, in most cases it's $6 or more (even higher when it comes to box sets).

I mean honestly, I live one hour away from the US border, now why would I pay $30 for the new Spider-man 3 DVD when 60 minutes south of me it's under $20 bucks. AND IT"S THE EXACT SAME PRODUCT! Companies are claiming that the prices are still high here in Canada because it costs more to ship things up here. That's beyond stupid. We're right above the US, not in friggin' Antarctica!! Do you mean to tell me there's that much difference in price in shipping something to Buffalo vs. an hour away in Toronto?!? I could see maybe a little price increase, but these are not little increases, these are huge. And it's not just DVDs. It's books, magazines, CDs, etc.

Sorry for ranting, as you can see this makes me quite upset. It's just really not fair. I've held back in buying a lot of DVDs (among other things) in an attempt that the Canadian economy will take notice. Doubt it though.... I am only one person.

Yeah, the only thing that ever seems to make big business alter their way of doing things is money... namely, losing it. The only way Canadians will ever get the prices we're entitled to will be if the majority of our population stopped buying luxury items entirely, and stuck to bare essentials. It would probably only take a week or two of that, maybe a month at most, until the retail world altered their pricing. We need to start putting some of them out of business to put some fear into the others, if you ask me.

Nothing makes me quite as angry as someone trying to rip me off, and I'd glady seem some of these places go under until I get the prices I'm entitled to.

Nope. I am going to the States once a month for my buying - Toys, DVDs, Comic Books. My wife totally ruined our last trip by buying sleepers for the kids. We had a trunk full of unnecessary crap and she buys something useful.

And Anthony shipping costs are higher to Canada - it is not the actual shipping costs but the cost of customs and clearing the border. But it sure does not account for the difference.

The good news - most comic book stores have decided to sell in US dollars.

I like the "old stock we paid more for" excuse. Yeah right!

Here is a good example:

Ray Harryhausen Gift Set - 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition / It Came From Beneath the Sea / Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (DVD - 2007) - Due out Dec.4th, 2007

Amazon Canada - $72.77 CDN

Amazon USA - $44.99 US

Where would you buy it?

LOL!

I buy all my DVDs in the US. Even with the taxes (GST/PST) and $5.00 Canada Post charge, you still save a bundle. And if Customs doesn't pull it out for charges, you don't pay any taxes.

BTW, DeepDiscount.com is having their 20% off sale soon (probably next week) so will be taking advantage of that also.

Canadian retailers - stick it in your ear.

James :)

Come to Europe my friends.

Our Pound is worth over 2 Dollars at the moment. Not that our prices reflect that at all.

But on the plus side, importing from the US is great value! I suggest you all just import. Put your money where it will hurt the most.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

In order for me to get to the states I'd end up spending all my money on the trip down there and back

If us Canadians don't get our prices lowered then maybe the Americans should start having to pay more money to make it even :P (jk of course) Although I think some stores here in C.R take advantage of our location to jack up the prices, there was a bookstore that charged nearly double the Canadian price for used books

I went to browse through HMV today just to see the current prices. Spiderman 3 2-disc is $32.99!
Young Indiana Jones Volume 1 was $89.99 last week. This week it's $99.99! :o
I want to add both of these to my DVD collection, but for Spiderman 3 I think I'll wait 1 or 2 years until the price falls down to around $12.99 - the current price of Spiderman and Spiderman 2. I'm going to hold off on Young Indy as well. Maybe when Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes out, Volume 1 may be cheaper.

I am not really sure that is fair. HMV is significantly more expensive than Future Shop, A&B Sound and Best Buy in most cases. But still Young Indy was $85 here and I bought in in Bellingham for $70 US

It's insanely annoying right now. I'm not noticing it so much on DVDs because they don't display the american price right next to the canadian one like books do. They are the product I'm getting annoyed with. My bookstore actually put up a poster saying they are trying to get suppliers to lower their prices so that they can start selling at american ones, but according to them they aren't having much luck. They tried to make it sound better by saying "well it's happening slowly, you're paying 35 dollars now for a book that would have cost 38 six months ago." Well that's all fine and dandy except for the fact that the cover says CAN $35 USA $25 still...

Nobody seems concerned with the fact that our money is worth more. They are just happy that they are essentially getting a lot more for an item than they normally would.

I'm annoyed...

I went back to this link and read the comments people posted about the X-Files complete set. Seems like the ball is starting to roll; people are showing their displeasure about the DVD prices. Hopefully we will see price drops soon.

THANK YOU! I cannot express my frustration more concerning this! The price differences on DVDs drives me insane, I get so angry at how much I am paying when they are so much cheaper in the US. The only thing that has been recognized at Wal-Mart is the price of Books & Magazines. They are now being sold for the US price, other than that, nothing else has been lowered! I am going to Buffalo on the 17th and I'm stocking up on movies galore. Canada is going to lose out on A LOT of Christmas shoppers this season cause everyone is going to be heading over to the States.

Just saw that it hit $1.08 on the CTV.ca website. 8)

I went to Toys R Us yesterday and even they haven't lowered prices on DVDs yet. The Pixars are all priced about $26. All new releases are over $20. Canadian retailers are idiots for not lowering these prices before Christmas.

I am hoping it stays there or higher for at least a week or so.

Really helps with the DeepDiscount DVD Sale starting, supposedly, on Friday.
