We didn't get any advance notice of the contents last year; maybe they've set a trend.Billy Moon wrote:Shouldn't there have been a confirmation of the exact contents of this year's Treasures already?
My own theory is that as long as Disney doesn't announce the contents, they can't get anyone complaining that X was/wasn't included until the sets hit the stores and it's too late.

Well in the pre release, we know that Oswald's dvd is gon'na have the Ub Iwerks documentary on the dvd, so least that's worth noting, as for the other 2's contents, really not sure. Speaking of Oswald, on Thurs. Nov. 1 I went tot he disney store after a interview and found a Oswald hanging poster in the kitchenware area, brilantly designed, nothing to fancy or in your face, just a simple pic of Oswald, the lil memo: Oswald The Lucky Rabbit: Special Editon
The tag was quite fiting and creative, Before there was Mickey....There was Oswald.

Amazon.com has posted an editorial review of Donald vol. 3. Most of the review simply deals with the different Donald shorts, so there are no surprises there.
More interesting is the hint about the extras at the end of the review:
"The extra features are fun (Donald's appearances on The Mickey Mouse Club) and, for animation buffs, informative ("Sculpting Donald")."
I wonder if that means that we will get ALL the "Donald strikes the gong and misses" sequences from the MMC?
And what is "Sculpting Donald"?
I was hoping for at least one complete Disneyland episode...

Some interesting suggestions on Amazon for the Oswald set, too, asserting that Ozzie Of The Mounted and Tall Timber have been found and will be included, which I don't think was previously widely known. That's actually quite exciting. It's also suggested that there might be some Alices on the set too.
(The rumours about Hot Dog and Ride 'Em Plowboy are still circulating too, I see, but I guess we'll know for certain in a few weeks.)

I know no-one else cares... but...
Browsing our own, our very own, Ultimate Disney upcoming releases page, there's a mention that the Oswald set will be a "compilation of Walt Disney's surviving 1920s cartoon shorts in the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series plus "Oswald Comes Home" featurette, bonus 1928 short Sagebrush Sadie, full-length 1999 documentary The Hand Behind the Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story, audio commentaries, art galleries"
Sagebrush Sadie??? That's supposed to be lost too! This is getting madder and madder by the day. That's 14 and counting if all these sources are correct.

That's right—thought it takes a heckuva effort to find these things!basically any title "known to be lost" could turn up again some day
• OZZIE OF THE MOUNTED and TALL TIMBER indeed both turned up in European film archives last year. Hopefully they'll be on Disney's set; I've been to the Netherlands Filmmuseum and watched MOUNTED, which is a truly splendid, hilarious and very fast-moving cartoon.
• The surviving material on SAGEBRUSH SADIE is actually surviving pencil animation or pencil test footage. As of this moment, I don't believe a final print of the short is known to exist.
• There is a rumor that AFRICA BEFORE DARK was also found—since discredited. The Filmoteca Catalunya believed they had it, but it was in fact a titleless copy of a later Lantz Oswald short.
• HOT DOG and RIDE 'EM PLOWBOY were rumored to be held as video transfers in an archive that has proven unable to find them. The collector they believed gave them to them, though, stated he'd actually given them transfers of the more common FOX CHASE and RIVAL ROMEOS, so it appears we can discredit this rumor too.[/quote]
Thanks for the clarification, David. Sounds like this is going to be one fine set. As you say, hopefully all the extant material will be on the DVD; it would be a crying shame to miss this opportunity.
The hard work of everyone who's helped locate and restore these films is greatly appreciated, in this corner at least.

Absolutely. I'd imagine that pencil test footage from the silent era is incredibly rare anyway, so whether the film existed or not, it's still a very significant find. That it fills in for part of a missing short is an extra bonus.Lars Vermundsberget wrote:Pencil test footage or whatever it is, is a lot better than nothing!

Me, too! Three Wonderful World of Color episodes and the People and Places short. Yay! The World's Fair episode is what I most wanted to be on the disc.Tony wrote:I am so happy with the Disneyland - Secrets, Stories & Magic contents...

The review of the Oswald set mentions three Alice Comedies, but not their titles. I hope they're different from those on the Rarities set.
Hopefully it's some of the 1926/7 series Alices, like Circus Daze or Big League or Rodeo, which are comparatively hard to come by and would be more relevant to the Oswalds in terms of the style and development of the animation.Billy Moon wrote:The review of the Oswald set mentions three Alice Comedies, but not their titles. Amazon.com Reviewer wrote:But for all his talent as an animator and technical innovator, Iwerks was not an effective director: His studio's cartoons simply weren't very good.

Well, *I* think they're quite good. If you want not very good shorts, try the early 30s Terrytoons - then you'll know what "not very good" means...

While it doesn't reveal a lot, it looks nice to see the website current.
Enjoy!

You're right, it doesn't explain a whole lot, but one thing it does mention is the official name of the bonus in the Donald DVD about the duck's career in the movies: THE MANY FACES OF DONAL DUCK.UrsushH.Bear wrote:Check it out:

I'm still clamoring for a bonus called THE TWO JACKS, which would be about Donald's two main cartoon directors at the studio, both named Jack: Jack King and Jack Hannah.
