Yes, the picture is anamorphic, but it has been cropped. The UK is 1.85:1, while the original aspect ratio was 1.66:1. Check this site for more info. You should get the scandinavian or the dutch one. But wasn't a new R1 released with anamorphic picture?

Thanx for the info KubrickFan. The US release is non-animorphic, but it is 1.66:1 . I was just wondering if I would be losing any special features with the UK version. I have the US release but my nephew loves the movie & I was going to give it to him if the UK version didn't lose anything. It's quite expensive to get the US version these days & with the now annual re-release in 3D for theatres I wonder if or when well ever get it on dvd again.

The only release of Nightmare BC that is presented correctly on DVD is the danish R2 one... Which includes the english soundtrack aswell... However I'm not sure if it's still in print... If it is you can purchase it on axelmusic.dk

The Australian (R4), Dutch, French and German (all R2) releases are also correct.

...though the sound is freakishly high on the Australian version.

So it sounds like a chipmunk is singing "What's This?" rather than a fun Skeleton from HalloweenTown.

Actually is it a Scandinavian release.

Unfortunately the short films, Vincent (1982) and Frankenweenie (1984), are incorrect NTSC → PAL transfers suffering from interlacing artefacts and erratic movement (like the Scandinavian Make Mine Music DVD).

That's a pity because those films are hilarious and highly original — only Tim Burton could create anything like them. Leonard Maltin puts it mildly: "the studio never knew quite what to do with them."

A new version of Frankenweenie is on its way, this time as an animation.
