ROBIN HOOD comparison pics

The following images were grabbed from the various releases of ROBIN HOOD on Laserdisc and DVD (I didn't follow the numerous VHS reissues and repackagings - they were from the same masters anyway, so...)

A = 1985 Laserdisc
B = 1991 Laserdisc (same master as 1985 but a less noisy pressing with digital sound)
C = 2000 DVD
D = 2006 DVD (anamorphic widescreen)

From comparing these releases, it appears that ROBIN HOOD has had three different transfers released so far in the US on video.

There isn't much point in posting pics from both Laserdisc releases. Aside from a shift to the right of the image (minimizing the strange black bar to the right off the image on the 1985 LD), stronger sound and less color noise, the 1991 Laserdisc is the same as the 1985 Laserdisc. Check out the images below.

For the comparisons below, I have attempted to get as close to the exact frame as I could on the 1991 LD, 2000 DVD, and 2006 DVD. I have left out the 1985 LD captures because they are redundant.

Oh, and if you're interested, the Laserdiscs omitted the Buena Vista logo and fanfare, while both DVD releases reinstated it. The Disney video logo on each is as follows.

Sorry, I'm ignorant on this film's aspect ration.

Was it originally fullscreen, and the re-release is just a matted widescreen? or is one of the disney films that was made in both widescreen and fullscreen with sometimes differing layouts?

It was shot soft-matte, which means it was shot to be matted but the negative was shot full aperature. It was matted theatrically (or was intended to be) at 1.75:1, and it was released without the matting on video. Oddly enough, the first video releases were fullframe but cropped some on all 4 sides. the 2000 fullframe DVD appears to show a lot more on the sides.

Strange that nothing is added to the sides at all in the anamorphic widescreen version from 2006, whereas more info is on the sides of the new anamorphic THE JUNGLE BOOK...

I have to agree. It looks more "crisp" Even though the most wanted edition came out no too long ago, this is one that should get a Platinum release. It's one of my favourites.

Interesting.

In most cases I like the first dvd edition the most.

But This 2000 dvd looks overly sharpened.
It loses atmosphere and intensity.

The 2006 dvd has this strange, plastic/rubber look over it, as if you look at the whole movie through a plate of glass. Just like The Little Mermaid and other restored movies.

Thanks for these pics. I noticed on the first pic that has these two logos for this collection, the laserdisc copies are from 1985 and 1991. I have the 1985 copy on VHS that has the 1984 Walt Disney Home Video "The Classics" logo rather than the 1991 version of the 1988 logo. On my original copy, it doesn't have the BV logo, but the 2000 "Gold Classic" and "Most Wanted" DVD editions, it does have the BV logo on it.

I taped the movie right off of Toon Disney last winter when "Robin Hood" was on as part of the "Big Movie Show". This was right before it came out on DVD has the 2000 copy from Toon Disney, but it does show the Toon Disney watermark logo on the bottom left of the screen. I'll post a pic later on.

Sweetheart, I know that - I posted that in my description along with the photos. Both the Laserdisc and initial 2 editions of the VHS are missing the BV logo. It first appeared - at least as far as LD and DVD are concerned (VHS I don't bother to count because the resolution is so low and because inevitably any new masters were also released on either LD or DVD).

There's not much of a difference between the first and second dvd release, I think. Apart from the cropping, of course (something I don't mind). And now the first release is too expensive for that bare-bones version, I'm glad I own the special edition.

I'm not trying to debate the merits of one version over another, at least not with ROBIN HOOD. I was just curious myself about the video transfer history of the Disney animated features, and this screen capture process is helping me see exactly what has changed over the years in the films.

I think it is clear to see the initial ROBIN HOOD video master - the one used for 15 years - was from a somewhat faded element. I have comparison pics of PETE'S DRAGON from the period, and on it the fleshtones are terribly pinkish and blues are compromised - yet that same master was used for video until the 2001 DVD! Insane....

I plan to re-do all my other Disney screen shot comparisons pics using my new, better Laserdisc player and method for capturing still frames from Laserdiscs. ROBIN HOOD is my first effort along with THE JUNGLE BOOK (I'll be including many more comparisons soon for it). DUMBO will be next, perhaps the most reissued and remastered Disney animated feature. I have three distinct masters used for the various Laserdisc releases alone, and there are two more for DVD! ALICE IN WONDERLAND might be in the same boat, but I'm not sure yet.

here are some pics from the movie that I taped right off of the Toon Disney back last winter right before it came out on DVD as "Most Wanted" edition. This was from "Big Movie Show". This is much of the same as the one you posted.





Those two pics that had the TV-G rated, the CC icon and the text shown in spanish "Transmitido en Espanol en SAP" at the bottom of the screen.



This is the same pic that you posted on the these versions, as for my copy off of Toon Disney, it does have the watermark logo shown on the bottom left of the screen.

I think that it's because both 4:3 and 16:9 transfers of Robin Hood show the entire image horizontally.
The 4:3 fullscreen transfer of The Jungle Book, however, is missing a little of the original frame on all sides.

I know that, the 2000 version was taped right off of Toon Disney as seen on that pic if anyone posted my pics of the version that Toon Disney ran that movie during the "Big Movie Show". It was probably right before the "Most Wanted" edition came out.
