I don't see why we can't have a discussion here, since both shows are
very much loved by the overall animation public.
It would be stupid to exclude anything ''non-disney'', it only narrows your point of view on animation.

If so ,one should also exclude studio Ghibli as non-disney since it is first and foremost a japanse export product!

What an amazing coincidence this is... I was just about to post in the "Last TV Show..." thread about Family Guy... I just last night saw, swear to other people's Gods...a great episode of Family Guy! Of course, the episode right after it was fairly crappy, and the one that came before it was pure trash - signalling that the show is still awful on the whole. But this 1 episode I saw was nearly pure comedy gold: Chris sees a commercial to enter the Army where they show all the soldiers in mansions, rolling in money, with beautiful bikini girls all around and wants to join based on that. Instead, Stewey & Brian sign up and hijinks insue. Chris instead joins a rock band and his parents are upset by his behavior change.

That 1 episode should have won an award - it was literally fantastic. And clearly belonged in the bank of a much better show.



But The Simpsons? Light years ahead as a program. In every area, every way, every thing.

For the most part, anything "Family Guy" did, "The Simpsons" did first and better. "The Simpsons" also has a plot woven throughout the show, which I appreciate, and characters whom you can come to like and feel for. It has gone downhill a bit, but "Family Guy" will never be able to touch it when it comes to its golden years.

OMG!! I totally can't believe Lazario liked that episode! I guess miracles do happen.

now, back to topic. I like Family Guy more than the Simpsons because, it always seems to take things a bit further and the flash-backs and references are in general clever and very funny (although some are hit-and-miss, I'll admit that).
Stewie and Brian as a duo are the best characters IMO since both actually do things they never could in real life and nobody cares. It's just as surreal as the many flash-backs, and Stewie's character has so many layers: evil, intelligent,, intellectual, and then when you don't expect it he does act like a baby.
The same goes for Brian, he actually is the one with the most common sense, but then again he can be very dog-like.

I do watch the Simpsons too, sometimes, but they have never made me laugh out loud as Family Guy does, but I guess that is just personal taste.

Stewie was always, in theory, an intriguing character. But the damn creators / writers of this show can't just decide if he's gay or straight. No, that voice is not "clue" enough. They milk him for pathetic laughs on both sides... Yet, for what reason? If that's supposed to be a good thing, it has to be for a reason.

The Simpsons is much more witty and clever. Family Guy started out decent, but then devolved into "Blah blah blah.... pop culture reference... Blah blah blah... vulgar shock joke.... blah blah blah... pop culture reference...."

I still like the joke on the Simpsons when they look up "plagiarist" in the dictionary and find Peter Griffin's face, then they turn the page and American Dad's face is under "plagiarist of a plagiarist."

I love Family Guy - I think it's a witty show that really takes aim at anything and everything - and all the flashback sequences add a nostalgic sense to the show. I admit, watching episodes from the first two seasons - the show is terribly slow, and not as strongly animated as the third season, no wonder it was canceled. But it came back as strong as the third season, and I still find it thoroughly entertaining.

However - the Simpsons are king. I've grown up with that show. The series has had it's ups and downs, and admittedly the last few years were okay at best - however last season, they really stepped it up, and the movie exceeded my expectations. The show has such subtle nuances sometimes, it's on the repeated viewings where I find a new joke or gag. Plus I love that they do commentary on every episodes with the creators on the DVD's.

Sure it takes aim at any and everything... but so did The Simpsons, and South Park. And I'm sure Futurama. And King of the Hill... need I go on? The fact is, who cares about that? Family Guy is still a poorly crafted show that rips off all of it's jokes and the way it does it's business is poor and sloppy. Who could think Family Guy is actually all that special? When everything about it is completely 15th rate???

Yeah I know we did this before - but no one could ever answer that question. They always just went, "I like it and you don't." What the heck does that prove? The show is not well made. Now, if you guys watch it more- tell me why anyone in their right mind would think it's good. Wouldn't you know why if you watch it so much?

It was canceled because people had slighly more taste in comedy and television quality back then. Today... people will literally watch anything. TV now is 100 million times worse than back then. Look at all the ungodly crap that's come on since 2000/2001: Girls Next Door, 24, Desperate Housewives (sorry, it's totally underwhelming- the women look great, but that's pretty much it), specific Fox News programs, House, Rescue Me, The Shield, dozens of incredibly mind-numbing reality programs, the list goes on for miles!

This is hard because I like both The Simpsons and Family Guy.
But I have to say I like The Simpsons more because Family Guy sometimes over does some jokes.

When Futurama came to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, I started watching it and eventually lost interest in the Simpsons all together. Simpsons is great, but it's not visually interesting enough for me. I think I eventually just got tired of looking at them. At the moment, I think a harder thing to decide would be which is funnier, Family Guy or Futurama. Probably Family Guy. It may have less substance, but if you can enjoy something purely for laughs and nothing else, I like how fast they come and how random they are. I didn't like that when the show first came on, but it really grew on me. Like most shows, it probably thinks it's smarter than it is, and the general public probably thinks it's smarter than it is, but the bottom line is that it's just funny, and that serves a purpose too.

You had me up until that point. That might just be one of TV's best shows you just bashed. I'm sorry, but if none of those listed shows are up your alley I just don't think anything on TV will ever appeal to you.

And I enjoy all of those shows as well. I like animated comedy. *shrug* I don't think it's poorly produced, and I think it always has a few laugh-out-loud jokes. Of course - I also really enjoy Sarah Silverman, and some people really don't like her at all. I mean - there's no need to into so much detail talking about what's funny and what's not - it's all subjective depending on the audience.

you speak as though there's been some huge generational shift in society. Family Guy was cancelled in 02, and resurrected in 05. Not that big of a time-span. Frankly - the older episodes are far slower paced and too much of a take-off on those other shows without standing out. By Season 3 and on, it's picked up its own individual qualities. To me that is, again - this is my opinion, we're all entitled to a view.

Also - I really love Futurama, I still watch it all the time, and own all the DVD's - It's a shame it's only being brought back for some direct to dvd movies, but.. i'll take what I can get.

Am I the only one who has, and always will, completely hate The Simpsons? It's as boring as One Tree Hill.

In fact, most shows in that genre are crap. South Park was pretty good when it first came out, but it's kind of got uninteresting since then.

Futurama. The Simpsons can be pretty funny; especially some years ago. However, ever since Futurama began it's been my favourite primetime animated program to grace the airwaves. Perhaps it's the high number of science-related jokes, or just the "nerd" humour in general, but that show just speaks to me in a way The Simpsons never did. Futurama also benefits from repeat viewings much more than any Simpsons episode, due to how densely packed-in so many of the jokes are... particularly the subtle ones that you really need to have some general scientific knowledge to get.

Family Guy, on the other hand is one of the least-funny things on television, IMO. It was mildly entertainment back when it first began... though perhaps it was simply the novelty; and that seemed to wear off rather quickly (for me, anyway). Every once in a while back in the early days a mildly clever joke or reference seemed to sneak its way in there, though even then they were few and far in between. Ever since its return, the show has relied exclusively on shock value, incredibly repetitive "jokes", and some of the most disgusting and disturbing situations I've ever seen animated (or in live action, for that matter). Initially one of the things that seemed to draw an audience in was the show's lack of taste. However, they've now moved so far beyond mere bad taste that it's become embarressing. And it leaves me wondering how much more the censors will possibly allow them to do before they run out of shocking and/or disgusting situations (and I'm not generally in favour of censorship, being pretty liberal).
