Apparently, this is a mock-up of the cover. It's supposedly featured in an official Blu-Ray newsletter, but maybe Hennie (who provided this pic on another forum) can explain more.

I don't think they should have included SB in the PE series. Yes, people have come to appreciate it more over the years but it's still not in the same league as the other PE titles.

I think they should have just left it at 10 titles, without the additional 4. "Peter Pan" was totally gratuitous with a disputable restoration and almost zero improvement over the SE, released just 4 years prior.

People should also not hold their breath for the release of SB. It'll probably be a identical to the 2003 edition.

Sorry for being negative, but half of the PEs so far have not reached the standards of SW or Aladdin in terms of bonus features, so emblazoning the cover with a "Platinum Edition" banner to those 4 belated titles doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna be PE-worthy. It's just Disney trying to milk more profits.

I have no problem with that. Considering I somehow missed the 2003 Sleeping Beauty. And this 5 years later, so I don't see what the big deal is if they re-release it now. It's not like anyone is forced to buy it if they already own it.

Mods please merge this with thread with the Official Dicussion that I started months ago: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... highlight= Thank You

About the Cover:

It's beautiful, but Disney better make some MAJOR changes. I hate how this cover uses all recycled clipart from the 2003 SE. Aurora looks like a rag doll, and Phillip looks like he’s about to molest her. I want a proper looking Aurora and Phillip. I want Aurora with beautiful, big, blonde curls...not Rag doll stringy hair! And where the hell is Maleficent!!! I want her in her fairy form, not her dragon form!

I agree. Even though I've always loved the overall layout and color scheme of the 2003 SE cover, I hated the way Aurora and Phillip looked. However, I don't think we should be worrying just yet. This is just a mock-up. Disney almost always takes previous clipart from other covers to sort of placehold where they want the characters. The only time they don't ever do this if the cover in question will feature 100% new poses by the characters ala Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, and Jungle Book. I do hope they change the content of the bottom half simply because (as cool as the Phillip vs. the Dragon scene is) I want the PE to differentiate itself more from the SE and match the other Platinums. To do that, Maleficent would have to appear in fairy form at the bottom corner, and side characters like the three good fairies, King Stephan, and King Hubert will be on the opposing end. Chances are Aurora and Phillip will take up the top half, and if that's the case, I hope the new clipart of them has Phillip actually kissing Aurora instead of him staring at her blankly. I also think the Fairies should be standing in a corner instead of flying, kind of like on the Enchanted Tales cover. With them in one corner, Fairy Maleficent in the other, the castle in the middle, and Aurora and Phillip at the top, the cover will nicely match the other Platinums. One thing I do hope they keep is the purple color scheme. It's really pretty and suits the film well.

That is georgous and I was about to just scroll down and post, but then i read your reply and found you pretty much took the words out of my mouth.

I also don't like how Aurora and Phillip are on the left...they should be in the middle!

I agree with everyone else, but there is one more thing that's wrong that has really annoyed me from the 2003 release and this mock up. Aurora's dress is blue when she's asleep!!!

Now that is strange. I know the more popular titles in the PE series are released in October and the March release is usually the smaller hit. SB may be a far more accomplished piece of art than 'Dalmatians' but it's by no means more popular - and that's an understatement. SB sold on VHS 1 million units vs. Dalmatians' 7 (est.) million. SB's rental revenues sit at $21 million vs. $60 million. Oh well.

The explanation is not that complicated: 101 Dalmatians was simply part of the first "crop" of Platinum Edition titles and was never released on a 2 disc DVD yet, whereas Sleeping Beauty already got a 2 disc set platinum-like edition. So it's only logic that 101 Dalmatians should come first.

Will Sleeping Beauty awake on Blu-ray?

Post by leuchtmuschel »

Hi everybody!

Sleeping Beauty is indeed the perfect classic to start a Disney Collection in HDTV. This film is a “moving painting”. The backgrounds are unnecessary rich in detail. There is so much detail that the usual moviegoer cannot get them because he views the action and story. On home cinema there is a complete other situation: You can view this film every time!

With NTSC you cannot see the rich detail the artists worked into every leaf. You can only see a few dots. With HDTV you can see the whole background!

This is the reason why Sleeping Beauty is a perfect choice to be awakened from the prince named HDTV that’s ride the carousel of progress today.

But what if the wicked stepmother will make Blu-ray into no success! She has made a spell on all the marketing experts in the media industry: They want sell two systems to the customers: Blu-ray and HD-DVD. But the market can only serve one system!

The next evil spell is that the marketing experts don’t trust the customers anymore.

I have entered Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray on my shopping cart. But I will wait. The battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is going since 18 months. If the drawn exist the next 18 months, both systems will die a natural death!

And then Sleeping Beauty will be awakened from the prince Blu-ray never again!

That cover art, is a little weird. I'd like to see how they'll change it, because that's just, not too good. And I agree with Escapay. I like the French art better.

 I think "excessively" would be a kinder word to use.

Hmm... I think you mean SDTV (Standard Definition TV), not NTSC. NTSC is simply a colour format, used mainly in the US, and I believe parts of Asia, like Japan. PAL is another colour format, used in the Middle East, Australia and all of Europe, including Germany. These colour formats, however, have nothing to do with SDTV or HDTV, as far as I know. You can have HD video on Blu-Ray in the NTSC colour system, for example. Understand?

If that is the actual cover that is posted, then I'm a little torn on it. On one hand, I like it better than the 2003 edition cover, but I'm dissapointed it isn't a lot better. Here are somethings I would change and not change:

* DON'T CHANGE THE COLOR SCHEME! I like the purple much better than the odd blue-ish color of the 2003 ed.

* Put fairy Maleficent on the cover instead of the dragon! This is very much a personal preference of mine, but pleeeeaaaaase!

* Change the art of the caracters in general, they look pretty pathetic right now.

but other than that, I'm okay with what we've got, I could also swing an extreme make-over all together, provided its for the best.

I'm looking forward to get the "Sleeping Beauty" DVD once again. I remember at one time, the "Special Edition" copy from 2003 was out of print, so let hope will do the same special feature including a short film on "Grand Canyon". Let's hope and pray for this movie to come out on DVD.
