An American Tail on DVD

Post by Poppins#1 »

I thought I would post this in "Off Topic" since these are not Disney movies, but are still classic animation. When I first heard that "An American Tail" and "An American Tail: Fievel Goest West" had come out on DVD (with very little promotion from Universal), I was disappointed to find out they were full frame only. But I decided to give Universal the benefit of the doubt that perhaps these features were actually animated in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. For the first American Tail movie a widescreen edition has never been released, so I have nothing to compare it to, it may very well be correct in full frame. However I do have the widecreen laserdisc of "Fievel Goes West", so I rented "FGW" on DVD to compare it to the laserdisc, hoping that the full frame DVD would show more of the image. BUT NO! The DVD is cropped! The correct aspect ration is 1.85:1. The Laserdisc shows the whole image and the DVD does not.

So why would Universal release it this way without an OAR option? Probably because they are under the very mistaken impression that kids hate widescreen.

DON'T BUY THIS DVD!!!

:excellent: I am personally a big fan of FUllSCREEN DVD'S. I like both Widescreen and FullScreen it makes no difference to me what the screen size is!

I like the American Tale films, but I'm not buying them on DVD until they come out in their proper aspect ratio. The current DVDs are appaling - fullscreen, and barebones. Not a proper way to treat any movie.

That's it! They think children hate widescreen, but in that case they should give us the chance to see the movie in widescreen or fullscreen.

Personally, I think when you watch movies in fullscreen you're missing a part of the film, and when you pay for one movie, you pay for the WHOLE movie.
I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

I bought the first American Tail which I'm told on other message boards that is its oar but did avoid buying Fievel Goes West due to it being cropped. The special features are abysmal (just like the Land Before Time AE which I bought) but at least the movies are the way they are supposed to be seen. I won't buy Fievel Goes West until it's released in OAR & if that means I DIE without it in my collection, SO BE IT.
