The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles

Post by Mr. Toad »

George Lucas announced it this weekend. They are coming in May 2008 paired with Indy 4. It will be the longer versions with two episodes put together with extra footage for 90 minute episodes that were on the VHS and not as originally displayed on TV. I guess I dont mind given that is what he wanted to do in the first place but could not because of the limitations of TV.

This drops the number of series I want on DVD that has never had at least one season released to 2 - Batman and Maverick.

Proof I can predict the future: Escapay will come here and do a happy dance with several pink elephants.

Anyway, great news! 2008, the year Indy comes back, is going to rock!

:pink: = Yay, one of the highlights of my early childhood is AT LAST coming to DVD!!!

:x = The 90-minute movie versions lose the bookending sequences with Old Indy (George Hall), and the newly shot footage (that help "extend" the episodes to 90-minute movies, in addition to footage already deleted) is from 1996, when both Flanery and Carrier are noticeably older!

Still, the episodic version could be quite confusing, as one episode would be set in 1908, then the next week would be in 1916, then the week after it's suddenly 1910or so. But at the same time, that was the thrill of the series, you never knew which Indy you'd be having the adventure with (though eventually they found themselves using Flanery's Indy much more than Carrier's)

I wonder if the short featurettes from the VHS tapes would be included on this release. They likely came from longer interview sessions and would make nice making-of/retrospective pieces per movie.

The one thing I'm concerned about is that since they're going to be the 22 movies instead of the 44 episodes, I have a feeling each movie gets its own release, making it all the more expensive to collect the whole series. Then again, Doctor Who does the same thing (usually 4 episodes plus extras per disc, priced on its own). And both series have undergone extensive clean-up and restoration.

All in all, naturally, I'm still excited by this release!!!

I'm thrilled about this news! I have all the VHS releases, and I was really ticked about them cutting us off the way they did (though, now I'm glad there weren't more, since I have to buy them all again!). I really hope they are sold in a boxed set though. Selling them individually would make it too difficult to get them all, especially for those of us on a budget. At least, the boxed set should be an option. I expect a boxed set though. I think they'd be too afraid of certain titles not selling if they came out individually, like the Carrier episodes. I like 'em, but the kid didn't have much screen charisma to me.

Anyway, as for the combining of episodes, I like it (I can overlook the noticeable age differences in the new footage). I like that we can more easily view them in chronological order, and I never cared much for the "old Indy" character. However, I do think the Old Indy stuff should be included as an extra for each film, but I woud be surprised if they give us that. In "The Mystery of the Blues," we get Harrison Ford as Indy bookends to the story, and it would be so fantastic if all the films had that. I wish they'd shoot some for the DVDs while making Indy 4, ha, but I know that'll never happen.

No. No. No. No. No

Haven't we had enough of this revisitation crap from Lucas already? Poor, downtrodden little Lucas. Never able to get his vision on the screen because he has to battle against the evils of technology, budget and time.

How long has it taken him to get up and actually make Indiana Jones 4? I wish he would just stop thinking about the past and get on with making new movies. His buddy Spielberg manages to make new movies all the time - he made War of the Worlds in record time considering the technological challenges. And Spielberg co-runs a studio.

The fact that Lucas can only, seemingly, look to the past for all of his creative choices. He should be looking to the future, and creating new and wonderous stories. (And by "looking to the future", I don't mean more CGI puppets)

Well, you're forgetting that some people actually like the new stuff from Lucas. One man's crap is another man's pizza pie. Personally, I don't think ALL his changes were good, but they weren't all bad either, and the fact that they were Sci-Fi films, they were his legacy, and he couldn't make them exactly the way he wanted before because of the lack of computer technology, those are pretty good reasons for retooling them at least once.

But, Star Wars aside, the Young Indy topic is different. For one thing, as much as some of us love them, they aren't the sorts of "classics" the feature films are. Adding Harrison Ford bookends wouldn't affect the actual films much, and they've already removed the original bookends. It can only help them by giving them a stronger link to the feature films and probably attracting more viewers with the original Indy's presence. We're just talking about intros and exits here. Since they've already reworked the episodes to make movies out of them anyway, it wouldn't really be tampering with a DVD release of the original versions. It would be tampering with an already tampered with version, and, in my opinion, only to improve it.

Frankly, I don't blame Lucas for sticking to his established successes. Everything he makes outside of the realms of Star Wars and Indy is shot down, even when it's good (like Radioland Murders).

I think that Slave2moonlight is wishing for them to shoot new bookends, it doesn't say that they are.

I know this is really, really hard to understand but Lucas is not Spielberg. They are indeed two different people and do different things. Just because lil Stevie makes new movies all the time doesn't mean that Lucas has to. They aren't in competition.

According to IMDB, Lucas is currently working on:

"Untitled Star Wars TV Series" (2009) (executive producer)
Red Tails (2008) (announced) (executive producer) (producer)
Fourth Installment of the Indiana Jones Adventures (2008) (exec. prod.)
"Untitled Clone Wars TV Series" (2008) (executive producer)

In addition to running his companies, raising three children and still having time for his girlfriend, I think he is plenty busy.

No, these are the versions they released (and intended to release, because not all of them made it) onto VHS. They would take two episodes and combine them as one movie by shooting new footage to link them, like Disney sometimes does with Winnie the Pooh and other direct to video releases (Hercules: Zero to Hero, Tarzan and Jane). There are no bookends, except on my favorite one, Mystery of the Blues, where Harrison Ford actually plays Indy in the bookends. However, I THINK that one was always a two hour movie, as some of the later ones were.

It would be nice if the one-eyed Indy stuff was included as an extra on each disc, or if we could get a viewing option (as Ltinker1976 suggested), but I highly doubt it. Knowing Lucas, we might get a half second look at one of his scenes during an interview or something as Lucas explains why he was removed, but that'll probably be it.

Like I said, I wish they'd shoot new bookends for the other "movies" using Harrison Ford, but that's just my own fantasy for the DVD release. Not really gonna happen. But, personally, I was never a big fan of the idea of a 99 year old Indy getting mad at little kids and forcing them to hear his stories of WWI. However, that's what Lucas originally gave us, so, of course, I wish we could get the original versions too, but I'd be totally satisfied with that stuff as "deleted scene" material.

Thats SRP. I would imagine that retail will be somewhere about $80 but that is still a lot. The extras with the documentaries sound excellent though.
