Good! I'm glad that it's not going to be Disney-Pixar studios. This sounds much better. And apparently I was wrong. Oops!

After years of speculation and unfounded rumor, it's finally true. Disney-MGM Sudios is dropping "MGM". To those of us who grew up with the park, it will always be referred to as "MGM" in short-hand and conversation. Nostalgia aside, I can't fault this name change too much. I don't think the name needed to change, but it may very well be a contractual necessity. If that's the case, then Disney's Hollywood Studios is an acceptable and appropriate name. It fits in with the Hollywood Pictures Backlot in California and doesn't really change the park concept. Best of all, it's more imaginative than just "The Disney Studios" and infinitely less lame than "Disney-Pixar Studios".

I will still probably always refer to the park as MGM. The name is much better than Disney Studios or Disney-Pixar Studios though. Will the MGM related parts of attractions be taken out as well or is it just a change in name?

New Attractions, Experiences:

Toy Story Mania! Guests get sporty in a new, interactive "Toy Story" competition inspired by Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story" films and hosted by characters like they've never before experienced. Past a queuing area featuring a giant Mr. Potato Head, guests grab 3-D glasses, board fanciful ride vehicles and zip into a world of exciting midway-style games hosted by many of their favorite "Toy Story" characters including Woody, Hamm and Rex. Once inside "Andy's Toy Box," the competition heats up. Who can rack up the most points? Using spring-action shooters, guests launch darts at balloons, rings at aliens, eggs at whimsical barnyard targets. Toy Story Mania! takes the interactive ride-game experience to infinity -- and beyond. (summer 2008)

"Block Party Bash." Play, party and dance as the Disney-Pixar Film Pals present "Block Party Bash," the wildest, most interactive parade in Disney history. New to Disney's Hollywood Studios, "Block Party Bash" will invite guests to rock to retro tunes, be dazzled by high-flying acrobatics and join in the fun as more than 20 partying Disney-Pixar Film Pals fill the theme park streets. This immersive rolling spectacle will feature favorite characters from "The Incredibles," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "A Bug's Life." (spring 2008, replaces "Disney Stars and Motor Cars" parade)

"Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" A whole new cast of friends from Playhouse Disney fills the popular Playhouse Disney stage. Children will be on their feet singing, clapping and dancing to performing stars from "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Little Einsteins," "Handy Manny" and more. ("Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" will be dark most of January 2008, reopens February 2008)

"Disney High School Musical 2: School's Out!" With new songs and a rollicking new spirit, the Disney Channel Original Movie "High School Musical 2" comes to life on the streets of Disney's Hollywood Studios. It is interactive fun as high-energy performers on a traveling stage invite all ages to catch Wildcat fever by singing and dancing. (fall 2007, replaces "High School Musical Pep Rally")

Meet and Greet Adds Handy Manny. And what would a Disney theme park be without characters? Disney's Hollywood Studios is center stage for character meet and greets. Disney Channel stars JoJo and Goliath and the Little Einsteins welcome guests in the Animation Courtyard next to "Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" and will be joined for the first time by Handy Manny later this year. (November 2007)

This has also been a source of speculation and rumor. I don't know that there's ever been any public/official confirmation about this, but from what I understand, the MGM name and the presence of MGM properties in the park are not necessarily tied together. I think it's pretty unlikely that we'll see MGM properties (like Oz in the Great Movie Ride) removed anytime soon, but I guess that's primarily based on a gut feeling and the idea that Disney would probably rather renegotiate a contract than shut down and substantially alter attractions.

Thanks Aaron. My main concern is the Great Movie Ride since it is probably my favorite there. Let's hope Disney does all they can to keep the rights to use these properties.

I don't know why, but this name doesn't really ring for me yet. I guess it'll take getting used to having grown up with just calling it "MGM," let alone Disney-MGM studios. I like the name "Walt Disney Studios" like in the Paris theme park, but I guess it's bad enough to copycat attractions than copy a whole theme park name.

I wonder if this means they'll add a replica of the Hollywood Hills somewhere in the park. I know they have a mural of it in the loading area for The Great Movie Ride, but otherwise, I don't think I've seen it anywhere else.

Thanks for posting the news!

I can live with that name change. I love PIXAR, but if the name had changed to Disney PIXAR studios, the classic Hollywood feeling would seem inappropriate, and that's one of the things I love about the park. I really hope it doesn't affect the attractions. I ADORE The Great Movie Ride! I do wish they'd remove that giant sorceror's hat there, or at least move it somewhere else in the park, like in the animation area. With the name change, we really should be able to see the Chinese Theater again!

By the way, is Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular still there? I had heard about it being replaced... If it ever is, I really hope it's with something else of Indiana Jones, like a ride or something (that doesn't go upside down).

I'll just refer to it as just the Studios. That way it's not too studio name-specific.

Like something along the lines of: Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye?

That is sad news. Disney/MGM Studios was an excellent theme park after 18 years of running this operation. The park opened back in 1989 and it was great. I remember seeing that special on the grand opening of the Disney/MGM Studios. The late John Ritter did the host of his special with special guests. I've seen a little bit of it since I was 10 years old. But now, it's the end of an era. They officially dropped the MGM name from its park, because it's the parent company of Sony Pictures. I remember Ted Turner owned the old MGM films at the time when WB owns the classic MGM movies, I don't see Sony owns the entire MGM library anytime soon.

I found this old commercial for the then Disney/MGM Studios from around 1989 after its opening. Here it is.

RIP: Disney/MGM Studios (1989-2007) :(

Well, the other choice was "Disney PIXAR Studios," which is the main reason I'm happy that they're going with "Disney Hollywood Studios." Of course, I'd prefer it to stay Disney MGM Studios, but I'd also prefer them to restore it to its early 1990's glory. I know, I know, I say that all the time...

I got sad news for fans of the old Disney/MGM Studios. After 19 years in operation at Walt Disney World, the Disney/MGM Studios finally made its last hurrah yesterday, it marked the end of an era for the Disney/MGM Studios. :(

As of right now, the park is now called Disney's Hollywood Studios, and it made its opening today. I'm very sad to be the park go after 19 years when it first opened on May 1st, 1989 until the very end January 6th, 2008. We're all going to missed you.

RIP: Disney/MGM Studios (1989-2008) :(

You said that already.

Actually, I'm not surprised that they'd change it, seeing as how the "MGM" bit has been unscrupulously buried more and more.

My main concern is for the Great Movie Ride. What will happen to it?

I've never understood what the deal was with MGM on Disney- MGM Studios. All it really seemed to be was a name. Because with having the MGM name, you would think that some properties from MGM would make it in there, but nothing really. I still think it would be cool if they had a 007 ride or someone dressed as Inspector Clouseau running around the park. So if someone could explain what was the deal with MGM there, and why was there never any MGM property represented in its own ride and such.
