Has Ed Wood been cancelled/postponed?
I seem to remember reading something about this disc either being pulled or cancelled but now I can't find anything about this, either way.
I hope I'm wrong but if anyone has anthing they can share that would be cool.
Thanks

Um, yeah, it has been delayed by BVHE from 2/3 to an unspecified date for unspecified reasons, although the general feeling is that they want to cross-promote it with Sony's DVD release of Tim Burton's new movie, Big Fish.
But...what does this have to do with Disney DVDs? This is the kind of talk that the Off-Topic forum lives for.

I heard it was rights related due to extras. I think they're being sent back, not just warehoused at the store for the Big Fish release. With only one measily oscar nod for Fish, expect it soon on DVD.
Better yet, read the book. Didn't see the movie, but did read the book. From what I understand about the flick, the book is much better. I enjoyed it. And it's quick.

To me, it seems like the cost of authoring, pressing, assembling, distributing, recalling and warehousing the discs - not once but twice is way too much for what will (sadly) be a low selling title.
I personally don't think that Ed Wood will ever be a mainstream film - it's filmed in black and white to start off with, and is the story of a filmmaker who most people have never heard of. Adding a sticker or two linking it to Big Fish will not do much to increase sales (IMOHO). Do the general public actually care who directs a film? Do most of them even know what a director does? As for Depp and Murray, people know who they are already. I could possibly agree if this was last year and Ed Wood was played by Adrian Brody or somebody else with a limited exposure, but it's Depp and Murray.
So ask yourselves, would "greedy" Eisner firstly have gone to the above expense last year just so Deleted Scenes could be added to the disc on the say-so of a Dirctor who has vowed never to work for Disney again[*]? Yet the same "greedy" Eisner would release the Muppet movies in full frame only, despite a personal request from Brian Henson for widescreen releases at the time Disney were in negotiations to purchase Jim Henson Productions. And then would he go to the above expense again just to cross-promote a box office failure[**] and make a few extra sales?
The recall is too late in the day. It's once thing to delay a release of a disc that hasn't been manufacturered (like Warners Roger and Me was to tie-in with the DVD release of Bowling for Columbine) and a totally different thing to recall a disc when it is ready to be put on the shop shelves. It must be some form of legal reason.
* Burton vowed never to work for Disney again after they (in his opinion) mishandled the release of Ed Wood. This is why Ed Wood is the last film Burton made for Disney (or their subsidiaries). I qualify this comment with the "in his opinion" disclaimer because the film did pick up a number of Oscar nods and awards - so I think Disney did something right.
** The film did flop, and I'm not so sure it's because Disney made mistakes when the film was released. Realistically it was never going to be a success. I mean, there's even reports of people walking out of Pleasentville when the film turned black and white
A black and white film about a mostly unknown director was bound to be a hard sell. But, just for the record I love Ed Wood and I adore Depp's performance in it (why no Oscar nod?)

It is strange that the dvd-release of Ed Wood seems to be such a problem. I have the region 2 version of this title and there's not really any material on it that I could imagine to cause any big rights problem. It would have been a case of excelent timing to bring this title out now.
Btw: this is by far my favorite Tim Burton movie! The whole way it is put together is just absolutely beautifull and the cast is really great (especially Johnny Depp as Wood and Martin Landau as Bella Lugosi). Not only a great biopic but also an excellent comedy and a really interesting movie about moviemaking.
EDIT: I read on the IMDB-board that copies of this dvd WERE delivered to some stores. However, they were recalled for reasons unknown. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109707/board/nest/5865566

Thanks for the information, everyone.
This has been a tough year for we Disney DVD fans in terms of postponements.
Hopefully there won't be any more!

This is what I read on dvdforum.nl:
It seems really odd to recall a product when it is allready in stores just because you want to anticipate on 'market developments'. I also read something about problems with a the rights to the cross-dressing featurette and that seems like a much more likely reason to recall.Just FYI, Buena Vista has finally spoken on the record with Video Business , and claims that they're looking for a "better date to release the DVD". Given the amount of money the studio and retailers stand to lose by pulling the disc at the 11th hour, it stretches credibility to believe that's the only reason. We've now heard off the record from sources that the title was pulled over a rights issue regarding material that was included in the supplements. If that's true, it would mean that any future release will likely be altered in some way (some extras might be edited or dropped entirely from the disc). VB has also apparently heard a rumor that director Tim Burton wasn't happy with the extras. In any case, it seems likely that whatever the reason is, the disc will be released again in the future but not with the same bonus material. So use that information as you will.
You rush a miracle man, you get rotten miracles.
I doubt it's because Tim Burton is unhappy with the extras. Not only was that (supposedly) the reason for the last minute recall last time, but the disc with the same extras has slowly been released all over the rest of the world over the past 18 months. Didn't Burton do anything to stop these releases?
Oh, and like I said, Burton wants nothing to do with Disney and has stated many times in public he would not work for Disney again - so I find it hard to believe Disney would want to acommodate any request from Burton.

MMB, where did you find a copy of this and do you know if there are any left in stock?
I would be glad to compensate extra $ for any of your troubles if you'd be able to track down an extra copy for me! If it's not out of the way of your daily routines, it would be really appreciated!!!
I know there are a few US retailers who have not pulled the disc from shelves just yet... unfortunately they don't exist in Canada!
:/
PM me if this would be a possibility...
Thanks man!!

Would that rhyme with "spittle"?MickeyMouseboy wrote:I will review this tittle if you guys want with snapshoots.
Actually, all I care to know is when Ed Wood is officially released on DVD (again), will the re-re-release be the exact same R1 DVD that you currently are in possession of?
