Star Trek: The Next Generation-The Complete Series DVD!

Post by MadonnasManOne »

TVShowsOnDVD.com has information on the complete series DVD set of Star Trek: The Next Generation:

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7677

CBS/Paramount's new Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Complete Series DVD release is on-the-way for an October 2nd release, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon at a current discounted price of $395.09 (which is a notably higher pre-order cost than it was at Amazon a month ago). It will contain all 7 seasons of the show, plus a new bonus disc with new extras produced just for this release.

I'm a HUGE fan of this show, and would LOVE to be able to pick up this set. I have Season 1 and Season 3 on DVD, already. Unfortunately, if the price is as high as Amazon has it listed, I will have to hold off on picking this set up, for a while. There are so many other things coming out, including the complete series DVD set of I Love Lucy.

Hopefully, this will actually be offered at a much lower price, and maybe I'll be able to pick it up sooner, rather than later.

This will make a great holiday gift for my best friend who is a self-proclaimed Star Trek:TNG geek! He hasn't gotten around to purchasing the original season sets.

Love the cover art!

I'd love to get this, but with that kind of a price tag, I'll probably end up just buying the season sets (used) slowly over time. Thus far, I still only own Season One and the first two movies.

That boxset looks freakin' sweet!

With the SRP being $455.95 (making it approx. $65 per season), it's pretty much the same as buying the separate season sets new (at least now with the price drops from their original $130ish SRPs!), but that bonus disc is definitely the icing on the cake for me. While I'm definitely gonna be excited for the two new documentaries (Wil Wheaton made mention of them and wrote a couple articles about the recordings on his blog) I'm hoping it'll include the 1994 TV Special, "Journey's End: The Saga of Star Trek: The Next Generation"! Not to mention all those R2/R4 featurettes (from Seasons 4-7) that instead became BestBuy store-exclusive DVDs...

Well at least I know what to get the boyfriend for Christmas now! Costco had each season on sale for $49.99 but this would take up much less room on the shelf!

I also find it odd that Amazon.ca has the set for $20 less then the .com site : http://www.amazon.ca/Star-Trek-Next-Gen ... 827&sr=1-8

That's good to know! At the current exchange rate, Canada's $377.69 is the equivalent of $361.812 USD! More than $30 cheaper than Amazon USA's price ($395.09)!

TVShowsonDVD.com has released the Press Release for the set, which streets in two weeks!!!!

Rather than repeat what it all says, I'll just give the gist:

-A Preview of the new docs, which shows that John de Lancie has aged gracefully while Wil Wheaton hasn't aged at all.

-The extra gubbins/swag is the collectible packaging and an exclusive poster.

-The new documentaries/featurettes are:
--The Next Generation's Impact: 20 Years Later (hosted by Wil Wheaton)
--The Next Generation's Legacy: 2007 (hosted by John de Lancie)
--Star Trek Visual Effects Magic: A Roundtable Discussion

-SRP is $440, sixteen whole dollars less than the original price given! That works out to $62.85 a season! And Amazon has it back at its discount of $304.99, though it still lists the $455.95 SRP

-Tech Specs:
--Original 1.33:1 Full Screen
--English 5.1 (not mentioned in the press release, but likely included)
--English Stereo
--English Subtitles

-All 7 seasons are pretty much the same discs as the season sets, even down to the previews for the theatrical release for Star Trek: Nemesis and DVD release of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (they're found on seasons 6 and 7). But, there are a couple new featurettes on two discs:
--Season 2, Disc 7: "Profile: Penny Juday"
--Season 5, Disc 7: "Departmental Briefing: Set Decoration"

-All the BestBuy/R2/R4 exclusive featurettes (8 featurettes running 1:50:26) are also included in the Complete Series Bonus Disc:
--Select Historical Data 1 (10:21) - from Season 4
--Inside the Star Trek Archive (11:10) - from Season 4
--Intergalactic Guest Stars (15:58 ) - from Season 5
--Alien Speak (12:57) - from Season 5
--Select Historical Data 2 (17:07) - from Season 6
--Inside the Starfleet Academy Archives: Sets and Props (17:18 ) - from Season 6
--Special Profiles (15:13) - from Season 7
--Dressing the Future (10:22) - from Season 7

The only major complaint I have is the lack of audio or text commentaries. Naturally it'd be hard to get commentaries for all 178 episodes, but it would have been nice to get some select commentaries on some of the more memorable episodes (like "Yesterday's Enterprise", "The Inner Light", "The Best of Both Worlds", etc.). And there are absolutely NO deleted scenes available in the archives? No model tests or gag reels? Not even the series promos? Also, I'm still upset that the 45-minute TV special Journey's End: The Saga of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" isn't included in its entirety. Instead, we still get an edited down version on the Season 7 bonus disc. Damn, I knew I shouldn't have taped over the special all those years ago...

Regardless of what's not included, I still can't wait for this release! I've lived without TNG on DVD for so long (and I haven't had a chance to catch the reruns on SpikeTV), so just *knowing* the complete series will be available soon makes me giddy.

This would be a nice set to add to the DVD collection. All I got from Star Trek are the ten movies. The price tag is not bad considering the price for the separate Voyager seasons.

Since making this post, I've bought into the idea of complete series sets. Therefore, I'm reversing myself and saying that I plan on getting this set rather than buying the individual seasons. When will I do that? I have no idea; no time soon, but once it's affordable (either because I save up or it goes on sale), I'm definitely getting it.

Not a completely terrible price, all things considered. I was frequently bad-mouthing Paramount for their blatant opportunism in taking advantage of the whole "Trek fans obsessively collect anything, regardless of price" crap... though, unfortunately, they seemed to be quite right, lol.

Though it's not really the end... now that Paramount has the HD arena to re-release new, even more overpriced sets in, there's no longer any profit in keeping the existing sets as such insane prices. The new TOS: remastere HD-DVD set is going to be more expensive than any that's gone before. Also, of course pretty much anyone silly enough to pay thousands for all 27-or-so collected seasons of all the assorted Trek series had already done so... now they may as well make the last bit of profits off the more sensible of us.

Unfortunately for Paramount, I gave up on their Trek season DVD sets a long time ago and bought the asian bootlegs for a fraction of the price. There was no way I was going to pay those prices for TV shows that are probably the most frequently-aired programs on Earth. In a single weekday around here, you can see at least one episode of every Trek series from TOS through ENT... generally more than one, except for ENT with just the basic channels.
