hmm...i agree it was released at a bad time.

here are my theories why this movie underperformed 100 million less than dmc at any rate:

1)bad reviews for spidey and shrek influenced moviegoers expectations.
2)overly long running time makes it not practical for familygoers.
3)serious undertone.
4)had to battle new movies opening in the subsequent weeks.
5)the assumption that third movies almost always suck.

i do hope it will reach 300 million. i want another pirate movies. though not in the nearest time. they could adapt any stories from the books. i love them.

Well, the movie got knocked down to #2 for the weekend thanks to Ocean's Thirteen (which had a strong opening of $37,080,000), but it still did reasonably well, all things considered.

It took in $21,316,000, a 51.8% drop from the week before. It's now playing on 4,002 screens, a loss of 360 screens over the previous week, but it had a per-screen average of $5,326, only bested by Knocked Up and Ocean's Thirteen, and its US/Canada domestic box office take currently stands at $253,614,000. Domestic earnings account for approximately 34.0% of the film's total worldwide box office earnings.

The film's foreign box office gross to date, however, stands currently at $493,000,000.

The total gross earnings for the film worldwide are currently $746,614,000.

The film's budget was reportedly $300 million.

The film is FAR from a failure.

Besides, ordinary folks don't need to be concerned about the competition. That's just silly bragging rights junk for Hollywood execs to bandy about at their power lunches. The main thing that counts with Hollywood is that the film is PROFITABLE. How it compares with other studios' films is really rather unimportant.

Besides, the film isn't even on DVD yet. Do you know how much it'll earn on DVD, worldwide? Quite a bit, definitely more than $100 or $200 million.

Here's a comparison between the film and Spider Man 3 and Shrek 3, for those interested, though - http://boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/char ... mmer07.htm

Yeah, the 8-12 dollars to get in that pays their salaries wasn't enough of a thank you. *LOL* Credits are only good for the people in the movie so they can put them on their resumes. (Although I like to watch them too. :D )
I only go to the movies on Tuesdays, when it's 5$ (and that's Canadian money, too!) ;) Plus, the $ don't go directly to them. And anyway, even if I pay somebody to get me food at a restaurant doesn't mean I don't thank them, also.

I'm sorry, but that's just an obscene amount of money to spend on a film. Especially one that was (reportedly) being rewritten as it was being filmed - indicating that the studios answer to make something "bigger" and "better" is just to throw money at it.

Of course, poor television shows like Buffy, the X-Files, Angel and the like have to make do on about 1/75th of that sort of money. And of course, the Pirates films are 75 times better than any of them. Right?

PapiBear, I'm sure you yourself could think of virtually unlimited things that approximately 1/3 billion dollars could be spent on.

Yeah, the franchise has only made them something like $2 billion or so, they're not sure if they want to keep making oodles of money or not.

All films have competition at the box office. Always. Sometimes it's more intense than others, but competition is always there. Studios don't, however, base their decisions solely on what another studio's films did at the box office.

If Disney continues the franchise, it will be because all the elements are there (primarily a good script), and because they think it will - what's the phrase again, class? - BE PROFITABLE.

Sure, but movie studios have their own loopy logic when it comes to how much they spend on a given picture. We routinely see $100 million-plus budgets these days, and many of those films become profitable (some don't), which is the whole name of the game in Hollywood - making money. If a film is profitable, it's a success. Doesn't matter if it's a low-budget $2 million dollar film that earns $12 million at the box office or a $300 million dollar film that earns $1 billion, profit is profit, and that's what the studios will ALWAYS want. These parlor games about who broke what record and all - that stuff's nice, but if the film isn't profitable, it's very much beside the point.

A theory I have (that I'm sure plenty others have too) is that between Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest there were 3 (?) years so that anticipation was VERY high for a new Pirates movie. There was less than a year between Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

I liked the third movie better than the second one, I didn't think they were trying to impress everyone this time. I did think that they were going to spend more time trying to get Jack back, instead of double crossing only fifteen millon times and fighting. It was a lot easier to rescue Jack than I thought it would be too. I thought there was a ridiculous amount of times that people had a to choose different sides and then switch back again but its Pirates and obviously some of Jack has rubbed off on everyone else. I thought that Sao Feng would also have a bigger part in the movie and he did have an important part but I thought he'd be in there for the whole thing. I was suprised that he thought that Elizabeth was Colipsal, its not that she stands out from the rest of the women but when you have the witch standing besides her, I would most defently think that the witch would be the god bound to a human body. Speaking of Colipsal I was disappointed on how they made her a Goddess and her transition. It reminded me of Gulliver's Travels with the Liliputians. It was too fake to fit in, which is saying something about the movie. I also wish more than just a tidal pool was there to show that she was mad at both the Pirate Lords for bounding her and Davy Jones for betraying her. The whole story between the two of them, Davy and Colipsal is pretty sad and I wish that there would've been something in the end to finish that story off, I know that he died and she was released but is that really all? I don't like him dying and them being at war with eachother. This movie was a lot more gross and violent than the last too, not horribly much but a lot more there was a few sword fights that were *shudder* and when Davy got his key back and put his tenticles through the guys body and when traveling to the end of the world and he broke off his toe. I'm going backwards here but the beginning, I thought was sad and everything it showed the significance of the song but nothing really went there after that. It just showed that there was meeting that needed to be called and I wish they made it be something more important. Another thing that they made a point of but really didn't need to be in there or should've brought a bigger significance was the sword that was given back to Norrington, then Davy and it then Will, killed by his own sword gets it back. So Will gets the best sword he's made in the end but there wasn't more than oh look its a sword and Will doesn't acknowledge its his sword, or I might have followed the sword wrong but I'm pretty sure that Will gets it back in the end. I liked Norrington better in this one, I think it suited his character better and though its sad that he died, I think it was the best way for him to die. I also liked Elizabeth's character in this one she was I think what they were trying to make her in the second one and in my opinion, failed. She was strong, independant, and actually made good decisions and didn't rely on her body to make them, so she wasn't as slutty. I liked Elizabeth a lot in this one. Do you know the other part I think was weird was Jack's hallociations, when there's a million of him, and it was funny and everything but you get to see what Jack sees and sorta wish they had remained that to be a mystery of Captain Jack Sparrow and not pull out where he really does get these crazy ideas. I can't believe they killed the Kraken!!!!!!!!!! That was sad You cannot kill him, he is immortal So about the end of the movie. I liked how it showed Jack wasn't ready to be immortal even though he convinced himself he was and I guess if Jack didn't become immortal then it had to be Will and of course Will wouldn't have made that decision if he was alive so he had to die so then he became the Captian of the Flying Duchessman and the rest of those souls were finally free. Its sad but its a good ending for it. At first I was sorta confused with what happened to Elizabeth but I guess they had sex on the island and then she found someplace to live and raise their son, and Will would visit them and they would go on his ship until it was time to leave, and then that one time outa ten years Will would come to shore. I find it funny that with the rest of the Pirates it ended almost exactly the same from the beginning, Gibbs at Tortuga, Jack with out a ship, Barbossa with a crew and the Black Pearl (except this time not cursed), and yet again immortality is the issue of the next adventure, except Jack has the map. Pretty good ending, I think, only question, if Jack couldn't kill Davy will he really drink the Elixer of Life?

I know that was a rhetorical question, BUT I do think it is better than X-Files regardless of budget. Better than the Buffyverse though? Pfft, not in a million years.

I don't think I will be seeing this until it comes out on DVD, due to schedule conflicts most days of the week.

Finally got to see AWE, and speaking as an avid lover of the first two movies, I really did not like this movie.

Spoilers (heavy criticism)
This was the "Return of the Jedi" of the series (and ROTJ was terrible). You had a protracted rescue (Han Solo), a female protagonist showing more skin (metal bikini Leia) and who is nearly molested by a gangster (Jabba), a long, boring preparation for a final battle, a motley group of exotic but mostly harmless warriors (Ewoks), the last great swordfight (Luke/Vader), and the separate destruction of the real enemy (Beckett/Palpatine) after the former enemy(Dutchman/Vader) turns against him. (At least Will didn't turn celibate Jedi and discover that Elizabeth was his sister...)

To summarize the problems with this movie:
- Globetrotting settings - franchise works best in "Caribbean" setting (& quick travel from Jamaica to China with 18th-century technology strains credulity)
- Singapore scene tie-in - cramped "soundstage" setting that didn't feel like the actual Singapore - all other movies got a birds-eye view, like sweeping St. Vincent scenes
- Worldwide pirates - bad extended gag posing as legitimate subplot, especially since final battle was only Pearl v. Dutchman anyway
- Davy Jones' locker - too long and weird, slapstick battle/chase with gods would have been more satisfying than figuring out that they needed to overturn the ship
- Dead Gov. Swan - bad and unexpected
- Dead Norrington - bad and unresolved
- Dead Kraken - squandered THE major subplot from DMC - should have been involved in whirlpool battle or eaten Beckett's ship
- Dead Sao Feng - a good thing - didn't come soon enough - Asian villains are boring when they aren't fighting
- Dead townspeople & little boy at beginning - very un-Disney, didn't accomplish goal of making Beckett more "hateable", but rather made me think twice about letting my young kids see the film
- Tia Dalma - crabs? whirlpool? divine identity was too convenient a loose-end-tyer-upper (and zero chemistry with Davy Jones)
- Barbossa - good as bad guy, but bad as good guy - loses his edge when being nice
- Beckett - drab performance in both movies
- Keith Richards cameo - a waste (probably an expensive one)
- Sounds from the Disney ride in the dark - from a technical standpoint, laziest homage ever
- Will & Elizabeth - she had better romantic chemistry with Jack
- Multiple Jack Sparrows - decent for Locker, but overkill afterward
- Pintel, Ragatti, Gibbs, Marty, Cotton - vastly underused
- Witty and eloquent dialogue - harder to find in this installment
- Gore (not Verbinski, but blood & guts) - much more gratuitous

Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of parts near the end that I enjoyed very much (whenever I was able to get a handle on what was happening AND when I was able to stop wincing over the ridiculous "Pirates of the Whole World" premise).

I think I'll continue wearing out my COTBP and DMC DVDs in the future. (Although I'm sure I will still buy the DVD and just watch the final third repeatedly.)

Uh.... wow. Your opinion is valid, of course, but you're really coming across here as if you were trying to find as many negative points about the movie as you possibly could.

Well, sitting through three hours of a premise one dislikes will accentuate one's perceptions of the negative...

The positives (after a good night's sleep):

The CGI was incredible, as always. (The visual spectacle makes the movies worth the price of admission.)
There were a number of big laughs from the regular members.
The musical score was excellent and underrated, as always.
I'm glad that Will and Elizabeth did end up together.

And those will be enough to get me to buy the DVD.

Nonetheless, Hollywood historically seems to have a problem with "third movies", as evidenced by the relative flops of Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third. AWE does not buck this trend.

Excellent! Absolutely excellent!!!

I finally just finished seeing this, for the first time. The only true complaint I have about the film is the length. Even though I really enjoyed it, it is just a tad bit long. I don't see the complaints that some of you have posted. I see a pirate film that happens to be quite excellent. In fact, it stands as my favorite of the three.

It has a much better story, this time. I heard complaints about it having too many plot points, and too much backstabbing, but, it wasn't hard, at all, to follow. In fact, I feel the story flowed very well, from beginning to end. It was much more linear than the last film. It was well directed, it had a few good laughs, and it has a good deal of sentiment running throughout.

I am very satisfied with it, and if it does happen to be the final film (which I don't think it will be), then it's also a great ending!

Thought some people would like to know that Best Buy is going to have the Blu-ray version of At World's End for $19.99 next week. Combine that with the $10 coupon from the DVD and it brings the Blu-ray to $9.99. Might be a good deal for some people that haven't picked up the Blu-ray yet.

Even though I haven't got a Blu-ray player yet, I'm still tempted to go ahead and pick this up at this price.
